Finding aid only for Manuscripts Small Collection 3383. Correspondence, news clippings, documents, photos, certificates, and other ephemera related to the Kentucky state Elks and the Bowling Green, Kentucky, Lodge (#320). Much of this revolves around leadership roles played by William P. Stamps, Jr. of Bowling Green. Also includes constitution and by-laws as well as minutes of the Bowling Green auxiliary, 1986-1987.

The Desegregation Of The Sturgis All-White High School - September 1956, Austin Valentine, Austin Valentine

Student Scholarship & Creative Works

On September 5^th of 1956, nine African American students tried to attend classes at the all-white Sturgis Kentucky High School. The event sparked mixed opinion among the townsfolk, many of whom showed up to protest the student’s enrollment. As a result a number of Kentucky State Police along with members of the Kentucky National Guard were dispatched to calm the crowd and to allow those students the right, granted by the United States Supreme Court, to obtain a quality education free from oppression and racial segregation.

Library Research Scholars Program 2018-2019

The Miami food scene - including restaurants, breweries, bakeries, and distilleries - is in a state unlike any it has experienced before. Fueled by innovators in cuisine and tangible public excitement, it is an unprecedented time in terms of both quantity and quality for South Floridians to eat and drink. The Miami Craft Brewery Collection effort within the Special Collections hopes to document and celebrate the rise of Craft Brewing in Miami through the collection of brewery documents, advertising ephemera, bottles/labels, actual beer, and oral histories from prominent leaders in the field.

This research delves into experiences with reasoning and selected criteria for choosing the right school for their children. Beginning with a series of vignettes that assist with recognition of parental empowerment, this research archives acknowledgement of their own positionality when it comes to making life changing decisions. As selected parents of African American children grapple with the strategic balance and possibilities of educational outlets, family and finances, they offer ethnographic accounts of their successes and failures with school choice. Individual accounts of parental school choice decisions posing as data ascertained from interviews provided research that explored the critical frequencies and …

Importing The American Dream: Japanese Hardware And Soft Power, Kenneth S. Klein

Tenor of Our Times

This paper explores the nature and reception of Japanese imports, both material and cultural, to America in recent history. It puts special focus on elements of popular culture such as film, television, sport, and video games to show how the content of Japanese imports shifted from being predominately hardware based to software based by the end of the 20^th century. The paper also explores the degree to which the Japanese identity of various products was hidden or emphasized in their advertisement and presentation. It contains her essay on using library resources, a three-page sample of her research project on the use of art as a social movement tactic by the United Farm Workers during the Delano Grape Strike, and her works cited list.

Felicia is a senior at Chapman University, majoring in History and Peace Studies. Her faculty mentor is Dr. Robert Slayton.

Ethnic Migration And Cultural Maintenance In Eastern European Ethnic Enclaves In Nebraska: The Poles In Omaha, Germans From Russia In Lincoln, And Czechs In Wilber From 1860-1920, Paige Mccoy

This thesis examines whether three Eastern European ethnic enclaves within Nebraska assisted in cultural maintenance and stalled assimilation, looking specifically at enclaves of the Germans from Russia in Lincoln, the Poles in Omaha, and the Czechs in Wilber. These groups were selected due to differences in their location, with a larger city (Omaha), the capital city (Lincoln), and a small rural town (Wilber). In order to narrow down the time frame, this thesis focuses on the years from 1860-1920 in these enclaves. First, I determined that these clusters of immigrants were indeed ethnic enclaves, by using a primary source base …

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

Prostitution survivor Trudee Able-Peterson used oral histories to research and document the efforts of women and men to respond to the sexual exploitation of women and children in Minnesota. Her findings illustrate the leadership needed to overcome centuries of commercial sexual exploitation to obtain a beginning societal response. Respondents indicated the importance of their interaction with pioneer leaders in other locales. Their comments also illustrate the many issues and challenges still facing the community.

When A Stone Is Not A Stone: Memories Of Clerical Abuse, Charles V. Sords

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

From the fourth to the sixth grades, Charles V. Sords suffered traumatic sexual abuse by Catholic clergy. He suppressed these memories, yet the pain of what happened impacted every aspect of his life. As an adult, several strong, sensory experiences brought the truth of his childhood into focus. He confronted the Church—and the system that protected clerical criminals. This memoir is an account of childhood sexual abuse, the particularly shameful nature of being raped by priests, and how the Catholic Church’s method of handling this and similarly horrifying revelations has re-traumatized survivors.

The Octofoil is the offical publication of the Ninth Infantry Division Association, Inc., an organization formed by the officers and men of the 9th Infantry Division in order to perpetuate the memory of fallen comrades, preserve the esprit de corps of the Division, promote peace and serve as an information bureau about the 9th Infantry Division. The Association is made up of 9th Infantry veterans from WWII and Vietnam, spouses, widows and lineal descendants.
