My Slovak Family: Madash Stories, From Old Country To New, Carol Steinhauer

Works by Local Authors

Carol Steinhauer, a long-time resident of Bothell, Washington, is a devoted student of family history. This book gives the Madash family history as they immigrated from Slovakia to Roslyn Washington. Previously she has written Frontiersmen, Settlers, and Rustlers: the Pease Story (2014) about her maternal grandfather’s family. It is archived in the Ellensburg Library and the University of Washington Library (Pacific Northwest Special Collection). She lives with Loren Steinhauer, her husband of forty-eight years. They have two sons, two daughters-in-law, and three grandchildren. Besides family history, her interests are gardening and reading.

"For Safety And For Liberty," The Devan Family Of Gettysburg, Andrew I. Dalton 2016 Gettysburg College

"For Safety And For Liberty," The Devan Family Of Gettysburg, Andrew I. Dalton

The Gettysburg College Journal of the Civil War Era

This article explores Gettysburg’s 19th century black history through the exciting experiences of the Devan family. Originally from Frederick County, Maryland, they came to Gettysburg as free people of color. In town, one member of the family was suspected of assisting slave catchers by handing over escaped slaves for a profit. Four members of the family served during the Civil War in the United States Colored Troops, three of whom died in the service. This complex story proves the fact that black history is extremely complex and should not be painted by historians with a single brush stroke.

John Wood; Scotland To Ns, 1815: His Marriage To Margaret Cranston; Eckford, 1970. Modified Register Reports: [Part] A Wood, [Part] B Cranston, Harold S. Wood, Donald Chapman

Books and Documents

After publishing "John Wood (Blacksmith) From Scotland to Rawdon, NS in 1815, His Descendants" in 2013, the author traveled to the home of his ancestors in Scotland in 2014. There he met and exchanged information with other extended family members who had been compiling information on Margaret Cranston, the wife of John Wood, as well as John Wood. This additional information allowed him to amend his 2013 book, which is presented here in digital format.

Pleasure In Atrocity, Ladelle Mcwhorter

Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies Faculty Publications

As Foucault says, genealogical work can be tedious and gray, but it is also pleasurable, even when the archives one delves into are filled with hatred, violence, and injustice. This article explores that pleasure, both in dangers and its possibilities, and in the process offers a partial genealogy of corporate personhood in U.S. legal history.
