Communication Branches Out: Developing Interpersonal Skills Through Genealogical Research, Julian Costa, Gary Snyder
Communication Branches Out: Developing Interpersonal Skills Through Genealogical Research, Julian Costa, Gary Snyder
Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association
Communication students of the twenty-first century must not only be able to interact in multiple formats but be able to express their ideas across varied platforms. A common deterrent faced by students conducting research is the lack of applicability of the subject matter to their lives. The integration of genealogical research can address this issue because it allows students to learn about, and celebrate, their family history. While engaged in such a pursuit, students will develop core communication skills, such as speaking and listening, online research, and message design.

The Art And Mystery Of Pragmatic History, David Hardin
The Art And Mystery Of Pragmatic History, David Hardin
History Theses
This thesis considers how we make meaning in our individual lives and in practice as historians. From an initializing question —Why do people believe things that have either been proven false or shown improbable?— born out of historical discourse in the liminal space between mythology and history, this thesis embarks on a inquiry into meaning that is both deeply philosophical and practical. The work develops a historical method that falls within the tradition of Pragmatism, and then turns this method toward two case studies (Pedro Huízar and Señora Candelaria) from San Antonio, Texas. The aim is to explore two myths …

The Sense Of Waste, Sean Sokolov
The Sense Of Waste, Sean Sokolov
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This thesis begins with the observation that waste is to an outsized degree subject to the modal verbs; we might say that waste gives way to the sense of waste. As a result, waste appears as an unusually animate–and animating–actant, producing in those who apprehend it the impulse to put that which is wasted to use. The introductory chapter establishes this fact and provides a brief overview of scholarly approaches to the study of waste, asserting that in order to transcend mere description of the phenomenon it is necessary to establish how waste as an actant entered into its present …

The Identity Of Lucina, Wife Of John A. Tarrant (D. 1864) Of New York, New York, Charles H. Smith
The Identity Of Lucina, Wife Of John A. Tarrant (D. 1864) Of New York, New York, Charles H. Smith
Faculty/Staff Personal Papers
In compiling my "Charles H. Smith: A Direct-Line Ancestry, Since Colonial Times" (published online in 2020), I was initially foiled in my attempts to identify the parents of my great-great grandfather John A. Tarrant (d. 1864), onetime owner of a highly successful wholesale drugs firm in New York City, or those of his wife Lucina (d. 1857). Some basic detective work I've carried out since that time has produced progress on the matter, as I now report.

In A Condition Of No Light, Alana Perino
In A Condition Of No Light, Alana Perino
Masters Theses
In a Condition of No Light is an autofictional investigation into lineages of familial domesticity. The performances therein circumnavigate one family in one domestic environment, yet are in dialogue with repertoires learned and rehearsed within legacies of myth, literature, theater, film, music, and image; as well as through the otherwise untraceability of embodied memory and inherited trauma. The methodologies used are primarily photographic but also encompass practices reaching towards sculpture, installation, and performance. The line of questioning reserved for this inquiry is how a home, its objects, and inhabitants generate, spacialize, and embody the conditions of wealth, whiteness, and gender. …

At RISD, I’ve been prompted to expand the scope and tools of my practice and to reflect on questions of meaning in my work.
I spend my days making things, but I’ve never really had good answers to questions of why I make the things I make, or what their meaning is. I don’t think there are simple answers to these questions.
I think meaning comes from …
