This thesis examines the reasons for the Ottoman Empire’s entrance into the First World War. It claims that the Empire’s decision was rooted in the failure of the European international system to uphold its diplomatic agreements and the resulting refugee crisis in the Balkans caused by Russian imperialism.

Was there such a thing as “crusading violence”? Traditionally the crusading movement has been sharply distinguished from other forms of Christian violence motivated, or at least justified, by religion. However, we have increasingly come to recognize the difficulties of drawing clear-cut boundaries between crusading and other aspects of western European culture in the Middle Ages. This chapter assesses the ways in which crusader violence was like and unlike other forms of medieval Christian violence.

In anticipation of the 100th anniversary of the First World War in 2014–18, the British government set aside funds for a range of commemorative activities. These included a number of “engagement centres” that aimed to bring together academics and local community members in addition to providing separate arts-related programming.1 The Imperial War Museum reworked its main First World War galleries, which opened with great fanfare at the centenary’s start. Kerver Book of Hours: 2018 Senior Capstone

First established at the “the sign of the Unicorn,” Thielman Kerver’s Parisian shop was surrounded by other members of the printing community. The shared use of engravers often led printers to duplicate or share the images they used. The particular marks they developed to distinguish their work took shape as early trademarks that separated one printer’s work from another. This essay examines the symbolism and visual elements incorporated into the unique colophon that identified Kerver's work.

In his Considérations sur le gouvernement de Pologne (written ca.1770-1771), Rousseau was not only opposed to the Russian supporters but above all to his rival in the republican camp, the abbé de Mably, who had also been asked to take sides by the Polish confederates. The comparison of their competing proposals highlights the strength and originality of Rousseau’s Republican project. While in the wake of Machiavelli’s and Montesquieu’s republican theory, Rousseau breaks fresh ground in making a close connection between the restoration of Ancient magnanimity, the strengthening of national singularity and the exaltation of patriotic sentiment. While it is impossible to trace the specific journey of the 1507 Kerver Book of Hours, it is consistent with the historical record to conclude that it was produced for an international market, and quite plausibly, specifically for the Catalonian Spanish market. This essay summarizes the development of the book trade between France and Spain by 1600 and the importance of books of hours to that market.

This was a logical theme for 2017 since the Project has long been a collaboration between Western Michigan University (WMU) faculty and students, the City of Niles, the Fort St. Joseph Archaeology Advisory Committee (see Appendix A), interested stakeholders, supporters, members, and community volunteers in the greater Niles area. Honors Undergraduate Theses

This study examines the influence of local and dominant Network Systems on the socio- economic development of the southern Black Sea colonies: Heraclea Pontica, Sinope, and Tios during the Archaic and Classical Period. I argue that archeological and literary evidence indicate that local (populations such as the Mariandynoi, Syrians, Caucones, Paphlagonians, and Tibarenians) and dominant external (including: Miletus, Megara/Boeotia, Athens, and Persia) socio-economic Network systems developed and shaped these three colonies, and helped explain their role in the overarching Black Sea Network.

This study is divided into three chapters. Chapter one starts with the history and historiography of Greek colonization. …
