Carousel is a series of oil paintings inspired by my seven year old
daughter, as well as my work towards becoming a childhood educator. My
aim with this project is to explore the performative and ritualistic nature of
children’s play: focusing on the creative ways children stretch and reshape
their reality through imagined play narratives. Upon the carousel’s stage,
children select a character and take part in a performed ritual. I’ve long felt
connected to the visual vocabulary found within baroque and renaissance
styles, and I am fascinated by the mixture of amusement, tradition,

In my work, I explore the overlooked complexities of linguistics within the languages I speak and I examine the philosophical ideologies that surround the different perspectives offered by those languages I do not understand. As a bilingual, I have often pondered about the languages I speak fluently and how their differences allowed me to understand my surroundings in distinctive ways. This written document is the accompanying thesis for my Master of Fine Arts exhibition - Disquiet Depictions. Presented within the exhibition was a collection of paintings, ranging from acrylic to mixed media. As someone living with both anxiety and panic disorder the symptoms that I have experienced, as well as the coping mechanisms that I have practiced, all influenced the paintings displayed within this exhibition. Imagery included self-portraiture across a variety of emotional expressions felt during moments of sporadic fear and happiness, vibrant geometric patterns serving therapeutic purposes, and subtle medication symbolism.
