Theses and Dissertations

This is a semi-fictional story told through a series of fake found documents. It describes my work and thoughts through metaphor. Machines have the potential to gain self-consciousness through accumulation of errors. Creativity can be confused with randomly generated variety. The acceptance of chaos and loss of control can provide a path to enlightenment.

Remembering Vietnam War Veterans: Interpreting History Through New Orleans Monuments And Memorials, Catherine Bourg Haws

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT

This thesis is concerned with the question of how America’s citizen soldiers are remembered and how their services can be interpreted through monuments and memorials. The paper discusses the concept of memory and the functions of memorialization. It explores whether and how monuments and memorials portray the difficulties, hardships, horror, costs, and consequences of armed combat. The political motivations behind the design, formation and establishment of the edifices are also probed. The paper considers the Vietnam War monuments and memorials erected by Americans and Vietnam expatriates in New Orleans, Louisiana, and examines their illustrative and educational usefulness. 1916 Easter Rising And The Reconceptualization Of Memory, Siobhan Doyle 2015 Technological University Dublin

1916 Easter Rising And The Reconceptualization Of Memory, Siobhan Doyle

Academic Articles

Like many countries, Ireland has a chaotic and tumultuous past which results in challenges for the state in presenting history to satisfy the education and expectation of both national and international audiences. The years between 1912 and 1922 were arguably the most transformative in modern Irish history as it was a decade of war, revolution and rapid social change. The 1916 Easter Rising- a failed rebellion against British rule- is synonymous as a moment in the past which represents Irish history, characterizes Irish culture and amplifies national identity. My paper will explore how the centenary commemorations of this historic event …

I'M Right Here., Emily Gadzinski 2015 Western Michigan University

I'M Right Here., Emily Gadzinski

Honors Theses

In order to survive the mundane, monotonousness of my depression, I performed an identity, a repetition of actions and reactions. This performance was the barrier between two selves, my outward expression and my internal experience. “I’m right here”, the title of my exhibition, is my way of asserting and re-claiming my identity. By re-claiming the spaces that my body and mind occupy, I’m able to maintain power and control over my emotional struggle, the perception of myself, and the trajectory of my life. The concept of my thesis was demonstrated through four pieces, which included a video, interactive installation, sculpture, …

Empirical Evaluation Of Metadata For Video Games And Interactive Media, Rachel I. Clarke, Jin Ha Lee, Andrew Perti 2015 Syracuse University

Empirical Evaluation Of Metadata For Video Games And Interactive Media, Rachel I. Clarke, Jin Ha Lee, Andrew Perti

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

Despite increasing interest in and acknowledgment of the significance of video games, current descriptive practices are not sufficiently robust to support searching, browsing, and other access behaviors from diverse user groups. To address this issue, the Game Metadata Research Group at the University of Washington Information School, in collaboration with the Seattle Interactive Media Museum, worked to create a standardized metadata schema. This metadata schema was empirically evaluated using multiple approaches—collaborative review, schema testing, semi-structured user interview, and a large-scale survey. Reviewing and testing the schema revealed issues and challenges in sourcing the metadata for particular elements, determining the level …

Jacobean Textile Design: Surviving (And Thriving) Through The Test Of Time, Janis L. Wild 2015 Dominican University of California

Jacobean Textile Design: Surviving (And Thriving) Through The Test Of Time, Janis L. Wild

Senior Theses

Jacobean textile design sprang from the Tree of Life motif, an ancient design that carried religious symbolism for many early cultures. It represented a greater power and as such could provide protection and even fertility.

When trade routes opened up between the East and West in the early 17th century, Europeans were eager for items made in the East and in particular for textiles from India embellished with The Tree of Life. This increase in trade provided a booming time for commerce.

During the reign of James I in the early 1600’s, the English designers added their own creative …

20 years after the genocide of the Tutsis, one observes within the artistic production dealing with these traumatic events the presence of several comics (or bande dessinée). Yet is this specific mode of expression which often remains associated with lightness, humour and caricature capable to address in a credible fashion such delicate topics as pain, cruelty and death ? How do comics “translate” this 1994 tragedy for the purpose of critically raising awareness and providing memorial accounts while respecting the reader’s sensitivity ? Is there an “appropriate” depiction and where is the frontier between sensational, reliable and emotionally convincing portrayal …

Turn, Turn, Turn: Civic Instrumentalisation And The Promotion Of Autonomy In ‎Contemporary Arts Funding, Connell Vaughan, Michael O'Hara, Elizabeth Matthews, Colm Desmond, Jeanette Doyle, Catherine O'Carroll 2015 Technological University Dublin

Turn, Turn, Turn: Civic Instrumentalisation And The Promotion Of Autonomy In ‎Contemporary Arts Funding, Connell Vaughan, Michael O'Hara, Elizabeth Matthews, Colm Desmond, Jeanette Doyle, Catherine O'Carroll

Conference papers

Over the past twenty-five years aesthetic practice, theory and Arts policy in Europe and North America has been subject to three different yet interrelated and international “turns”: creative, social and ethical this has been exemplified by Arts funding policy in Ireland. Combined, these three turns produce a tone of cultural production that is pitched toward a more measurable and overtly instrumental direction. This paper explores the trends regarding the critical terms of instrumentality and autonomy and their relevance to arguments relating to criteria employed in current Irish Arts funding policy. We argue that that existing Arts funding criteria relegates the …

Ocean Surface Shader, Kara Lauren Gundersen 2015 Clemson University

Ocean Surface Shader, Kara Lauren Gundersen

All Theses

The Renderman Layered Ocean Shader (RLOS) is a RenderMan displacement shader that makes it easier and more efficient to generate realistic oceans. The shader implements a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) wave algorithm to generate tileable ocean surface displacements. These displacement layers can be added to other displacement layers to increase surface detail. The RLOS can optionally generate multiple layers with editable parameters so that it is possible to create extended ocean surfaces that can be viewed up close. The result is demonstrated with an animated time-lapse.
