Vern Multilingual Font System, Nathan Zawadzki 2020 Winthrop University

Vern Multilingual Font System, Nathan Zawadzki

Showcase of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors (SOURCE)

Vern is designed in Latin, Cyrillic, and Hebrew for a total of roughly 160 characters or glyphs in this writing system. Based on the research of these systems, a reverse contrast style fits Cyrillic and Hebrew, while normal contrast has more difficulty in adjusting to them. This slab serif, reverse contrast style keeps the look of a traditional serif font in Latin. Vern’s unified design across multiple languages works in media such as book text or large-scale signage.

Embodying Resistance: The Performance Art Of Ma Liuming, Zhang Huan, And He Yunchang, Jianda Wang 2020 Macalester College

Embodying Resistance: The Performance Art Of Ma Liuming, Zhang Huan, And He Yunchang, Jianda Wang

Art and Art History Honors Projects

Chinese performance artists Ma Liuming, Zhang Huan, and He Yunchang produced works in the 1990s that responded to various forms of oppression prevalent in the Chinese society at the time. Relying on critical theories of Michel Foucault and Giorgio Agamben, this project interrogates the biopolitical domination of the Chinese Communist Party, revealing the strategies these three artists deployed to retaliate against government-sanctioned subjugation. Examining their works within China’s unique sociopolitical reality, this project places Ma, Zhang, and He within transnational cultures of dissent and contends that their performances constitute forces of political resistance that effectively undermine the sovereignty of the …

Major: Art History
Minor: Spanish, Latin American Studies, and Business and Innovation
Faculty Mentor: Dr. Deborah Johnson, Art and Art History

"Seduction is traditionally understood to have a sexual undertone, but this investigation aims to prove that the seduction of the female nude is not just a manifestation of carnal sexuality, but rather, can be ignited by the qualities of power, motherhood, and salvation.

Spanish Marian images by Zurbarán, Morales, and Machuca will be used to analyze how nudity allures the viewer, but allows the religious message to remain the central force. By referencing John Berger and Laura Mulvey and …

Major: Health Policy and Management
Minor: Italian and Studio Art

For my independent study, I used Photoshop extensively. The software allows me to use digital imagery to maintain a specific color palette that translates to the time of day. This color theme is extracted from my personal photographs of favored landscapes, after which I build in layers to create whimsical landscapes. They are whimsical for their non-uniform distortions of perspective and viewing angle, a combination that is amplified by the painterly application of color. Technology allows me to paint, cut, collage …

Mid 20th Century America Through The Words And Lens Of Allen Ginsberg, Lily M. Conover 2020 Providence College

Mid 20th Century America Through The Words And Lens Of Allen Ginsberg, Lily M. Conover

Art & Art History Student Scholarship

Major: Art History and American Studies
Faculty Mentor: Dr. Deborah Johnson, Art and Art History

Allen Ginsberg began producing provocative poetry in 1955 when he first devoted his life to writing. There was even a court case in 1957 to decide whether or not his most famous piece, Howl, should be banned for its content. All of this press made Ginsberg a famous poet; however, he also had what he called an “amateur hobby,” his photography.

In the same way he wrote, Ginsberg photographed the world around him: members of the Beat Movement, his friends, lovers, etc. Most of the …

Intimate Nevada: Artists Respond, Lauren Paljusaj, Anne Savage

Calvert Undergraduate Research Awards

Creative Works Winner

Most of us know Nevada beyond the Strip. It’s a place of houses, of shopping plazas, of movie theaters, and grocery stores. A place of hotels that are also places of work. A place of basins, ranges, vistas, and nature. A place of personal history. For Intimate Nevada: Artists Respond, curators Lauren Paljusaj (ENG BA ‘20) and Anne Savage (CFA BA ‘22), draw on photographs found in UNLV Special Collections to uncover the intimate visuality of a Nevada of past centuries. The exhibition focuses on how the imaged built landscape of early 20th century Southern Nevada …

The Art Of Making Paper, Kristen Theys 2020 Western Michigan University

The Art Of Making Paper, Kristen Theys

Honors Theses

The Art of Paper Making is an exploration into an overlooked field. My goal was to learn not only how to make paper, but how different materials and processes can change the final product. The process was not only for me though. I wanted to create a fun and informative way to document the papermaking process to present to those who aren’t familiar with it.

One of the biggest things that impacted my studies was the amount of time I would beat the paper pulp. The amount of time the pulp runs through the beater drastically changes the texture of …

Charting A New Course Through Meaningful Occupation, Jennifer K. Fortuna

The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy

Rory Odom, an artist and United States Marine Corps Veteran based in Florida, provided the cover art for the Spring 2020 issue of The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy (OJOT). “Turtles All the Way Down” is an 8”x10” oil painting on canvas. After a tragic accident changed the course of Rory’s life, painting gave him hope. During rehabilitation, Rory sought opportunities to challenge himself and build technical skill as a painter. His bold use of color and signature impressionist style convey emotion and movement. In the face of adversity, meaningful occupation helped Rory chart a new course in life.

Remixing The Archives: Indigenous Interpretations Of History And The Future, Marcella Alexis Ernest 2020 University of New Mexico - Main Campus

Remixing The Archives: Indigenous Interpretations Of History And The Future, Marcella Alexis Ernest

American Studies ETDs

This dissertation examines how Native art makes critical interventions that are aesthetically and intellectually arranged with the intention of displacing the master narratives. The project tracks how film and photography—historically used by non-Native people as a tool of colonialism—are being reclaimed by the visual and sonic scholarship of contemporary Native artists. The project shows how multidisciplinary artists use technology to remix audiovisual archives from a specific time in American history: portrait photography and ethnographic filmmaking at the turn of the twentieth century, Hollywood’s frontier representations of Indianness in twentieth-century motion pictures, social guidance classroom films from the 1950s, and digital …

Four Rocks, Ema E. Erikson 2020 Macalester College

Four Rocks, Ema E. Erikson

Art and Art History Honors Projects

Four Rocks integrates a community of moss and lichen onto four large-scale drawings of coupled figures drawn to resemble the basalt boulders of the Columbia River Gorge. These organisms obfuscate the divisions between the figures, embodying the inextricable role our relationships play in the formation of self. The four diptychs can be reconfigured into various combinations. Physically changing the work’s composition disrupts the figures’ realism, replicating the necessary discomfort of being known intimately by others. The work’s basis in a specific geography rendered from memory interrogates memory’s influence on our conception of self and our ability to connect with others.

Study Of Native Colombian Tribes' Art As A Mean Of Inspiration, Sofia Fernandez

UCARE: Research Products

Culture is one of the most important aspects of a human being, it shapes our behavior and identity since we are born. It is our lifestyle and it refers to many aspects such as the language we use, our values, traditions, beliefs, etc. Cultural diversity is one of the aspects communities nowadays emphasize the most, they want people to be mindful and respectful of the different cultures represented within the community itself. This creative project examines Latin American art, particularly Indigenous Colombian art as a source of inspiration for the creation of a series of artworks. This project aims to …

Virtual Touch: Embodied Experiences Of (Dis)Embodied Intimacy In Mediatized Performance, Naomi Petrea Bennett 2020 Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge

Virtual Touch: Embodied Experiences Of (Dis)Embodied Intimacy In Mediatized Performance, Naomi Petrea Bennett

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation, I explore a phenomenon I call virtual touch, in which embodied sensations of touch are felt through non-tactile senses. In the digital age, online interactivity has expanded the ways in which individuals experience connection, intimacy, and touch. Digital media, which have traditionally been thought of as disembodied, nevertheless have the ability to elicit intense feelings of touch. Through analysis of digital and virtual installation art, I examine the ways that non-tactile touch remains rooted in the embodied experience. The works I include in this study create a feeling of virtual touch through a co-functioning of the …

Engagement And Computational Thinking Through Creative Coding, Dana Hoppe

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

Rising enrollments in Computer Science pose an opportunity to engage students from diverse backgrounds and interests; and a challenge to deliver on positive learning outcomes. While student engagement is the driving factor for increased learning performance and retention, it has been declining to new lows for Computer Science students in recent years. In order to further explore the potential of contextualized computing as a tool for increasing engagement in computing and developing Computational Thinking aptitude in students, we have developed an introductory computing course contextualized with Art and Design with modules centered around guiding pedagogical principles and aimed at middle …

COVID-19 Graphic Design: Data Visualization and Information Design

This data visualization project draws from Giorgia Lupi and Stefanie Posavec’s book Dear Data: A Friendship in 52 Weeks of Postcards. After thorough research and note-taking from given and discovered resources, students were asked to respond to the novel coronavirus and the outbreak of its affiliated illness, COVID-19. As designers, students were given the responsibility to deliver information about the current culture while also acting as a participant to history — a primary” source. The object was to document history while also allowing for moments of positivity in the midst of such anxiety and uncertainty.

Students gathered data about every …
