Rereading Nick Joaquin As A Devil’S Advocate “La Naval De Manila” (1943) In Context, Luisa L. Gomez
Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia
Nick Joaquin characterized himself as a “devil’s advocate” for taking contrarian positions in Philippine cultural history. His early essay “ La Naval de Manila” is taken as an example of such. A re-examination of the essay within its original context of the Japanese Occupation of the Philippines, however, reveals that Joaquin’s early historical imagination must be understood less as an act of rebellion and more as a product of negotiation. It navigates multiple audiences and overlapping empires—the Spanish past it venerates, the American period whose language it uses, and the Japanese present that enabled its publication. Its power lies not …

Examining The Creative Process Of Visual Artists: A Phenomenological Study, Filiberto Vargas
Dissertations
Creativity fuels problem solving and innovation, driving both economic growth and individual success. Yet, many schools and organizations fail to nurture it. Today, there is a decline in creativity scores among U.S. students. This is concerning since many of these students will be the future leaders of organizations and communities. For this reason, this dissertation explores the creative process of visual artists to better understand how creativity can be cultivated. Visual artists' perspectives and sense-and-meaning-making processes offer a unique view of innovation and creativity. However, there is limited research on the creative processes of contemporary visual artists from culturally diverse …

Theme Story - Rethinking The Relationship Between Design And Self / An Exploration Of Object-Oriented Ontology
SIGNED: The Magazine of The Hong Kong Design Institute
The influence of design extends far beyond mere form and function; it subtly shapes the way we exist. Ontology, the philosophical study of "being", examines the nature, categories, and interrelations of various entities in the world. Object-Oriented Ontology (OOO) further subverts traditional subject-object perspectives by asserting that objects are not merely passive accessories to human actions but possess their own meanings and agency. This philosophical approach has not only inspired artistic creation but has also profoundly impacted contemporary design.

From daily sharing on Facebook to creating unique avatars in the metaverse, virtual spaces influence how we present ourselves and alter how we interact with others. Fashion is more than just clothing; design transcends mere aesthetic desire and becomes a journey of self-discovery. In our daily choices, how do we use design to weave our identities?
From the luxurious garments of royalty to the casual T-shirts and jeans of the masses, clothing serves not just to cover our bodies but as a medium for expressing identity, preferences, and cultural backgrounds. Whether it's a basic white T-shirt or a limited edition sneaker collaboration, these choices conceal a narrative of self-expression. Fashion acts as a "non-verbal message" in our lives, allowing individuals to showcase their personal styles without …

Theme Story - Inclusive Design / The Aesthetics Of Gender Neutrality

In today's rapidly changing society, gender labels are being re-examined and deconstructed. From personal attire to corporate spaces, the role of design extends beyond mere functionality to become a conduit for ideas. Gender is not only a cultural symbol or a marker of social identity; it is a fluid spectrum. As traditional gender boundaries blur, designers are beginning to question what true freedom is. How can design enable everyone to express their authentic selves without restraint? "Inclusive design" responds to these questions, transcending gender frameworks to make products, spaces, and experiences more flexible and open. This approach not only meets …

Theme Story - Breaking The Dichotomy Of Gender / How Non-Binary Concepts Influence Contemporary Fashion, Art, And Interior Design
SIGNED: The Magazine of The Hong Kong Design Institute
In recent years, the binary opposition of gender has begun to disintegrate, reflecting a broader cultural shift towards the acceptance of diverse identities. We are living in a time that champions the recognition of multiple identities and advocates for the freedom of self-expression. The rise of gender-neutral design is not merely a change in design trends; it represents a significant social phenomenon. It serves as a reminder that rigid stereotypes should confine no individual's existence. Whether it is the clothing we wear, the furniture we choose for our homes, or the art we create, all these elements explore a central …
