Identification Of Perceived 21st Century Graphic Design Skills, Content Knowledge, And Tools Needed In An Effective University-Level Graphic Design Program, Amanda W. Bridges
Education Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this study was to identify 21st century skills, content knowledge, and tools needed in an effective university-level graphic design program. Inconsistencies in the graphic design curriculum, fueled by the increasingly large number of programs and concentrations and the inability to track graduates, were some of the issues that led to a need for this study.
This study was an expansion of a previous 2006 study conducted by Shyang-Yuh Wang, which took place in Kansas and Missouri. This current study used a modified Delphi Technique in which perceptions from university-level graphic design educators and industry professionals from North …

Exhibition Catalogues
Upon Reflection: Judy Ellis Glickman is the catalogue from the University of New England Art Gallery’s June 26–Sept 30, 2012 exhibition of photographs made by Judy Ellis Glickman over a 35-year period. Best known among these are the powerful black and white images from “Holocaust, the Presence of the Past” and her strong portraits of “Resistance and Rescue: Denmark’s Response to the Holocaust.” Well represented with other work, among a broad range of subjects, are images of Maine, exotic ones of her extensive international travel, and her latest abstract images in color.

Law Faculty Scholarship
Consumers who want to express themselves by wearing contemporary clothing styles should not have to choose between expensive brands and counterfeit products. There should be a clear distinction in trademark law between illegal, counterfeit goods and perfectly legal (at least with respect to trademark law) "knockoffs," in which aesthetically functional design attributes have been copied but trademarks have not. Toward that end, as a normative matter, the aesthetic features of products should not be registrable or protectable as trademarks or trade dress, regardless of whether they have secondary meaning, just as functional attributes of a utilitarian nature are not eligible …

The Decagonal Tomb Tower At Maragha And Its Architectural Context: Lines Of Mathematical Thought, Carol Bier
Textile Research Works
Of several brick tomb towers constructed at Maragha in western Iran before the Mongol conquests, one in particular, Gonbad-e Qabud (593 H. / 1196-97 C.E.), has generated significant recent attention for its unique patterns with pentagons and decagons. Gonbad-e Qabud is also unusual in having a decagonal plan. While both plan and decoration distinguish it from earlier and later towers at Maragha and elsewhere on the Iranian plateau, the ornamental patterns follow a long line of experimentation with geometric expressions that grace many pre-Mongol buildings in Iran. This article examines in particular the overlapping polygons and radial symmetries of the …

RISD Fact Books
The Office of Institutional Research is pleased to present the Rhode Island School of Design Fact Book, 2012; a paperless, accessible, consistent source of information about the RISD community, its resources, and its operations. It is a summary of institutional data gathered from many areas of the College, compiled to capture the 2012 Fiscal and Academic Year. Where appropriate, multiple years of data are provided for historical perspective. While not all-encompassing, the Fact Book does provide pertinent facts and figures and is made available as reference to administrators, faculty, staff, and students.

Creating Knowledge
It is my great pleasure to introduce the fifth volume of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences’ Creating Knowledge, our undergraduate student scholarship and research journal. First published in 2008, the journal is the outcome of an initiative to enhance and enrich the academic quality of the student experience within the college. Through this publication, the college seeks to encourage students to become actively engaged in creating scholarship and research and give them a venue for the publication of their essays. This fifth volume, like the ones that preceded it, gives considerable testimony to the creativity, hard work …
