Blood Works: The Sanguineous Art Of Robert Sherer, Robert Sherer 2012 Kennesaw State University

Blood Works: The Sanguineous Art Of Robert Sherer, Robert Sherer

KSU Press Legacy Project

Robert Sherer is an internationally recognized gay American artist whose work explores race, gender, sexuality, and Southern identity, intertwined with beautiful and provocative botanical and anatomical illustration. His premier book concerns the complexities of romantic life and sexual attraction in the age of AIDS and conveys a profound and highly personal aesthetic statement in response to the continuing AIDS crisis in America and abroad. Images of his stunning illustrations are printed with non-toxic ink—the originals were executed in blood drawn from the artist, as well as donated by friends, both HIV-negative and HIV-positive.

Para La Defensa De Las Americas: The Pictorial Magazine En Guardia In Nelson A. Rockefeller’S Propaganda Campaign For Latin America During World War Ii, Carlos R. De Souza

Propaganda models recommend the use of familiar media, such as existing local or national newspapers and magazines, because target audiences are inclined to trust them more than newly established and untried publications. It is assumed that if the media cannot be used or needed to be supplemented with a more directly controlled and plentiful message, then the propagandist could not do any better than to replicate their formats. By reproducing the tested design and mode of information delivery of these trusted conduits, the sponsor of propaganda capitalizes on existing readings habits and this increases the likelihood of attaining his or …

Eastern Shore Stories: Technology, Place, And Local Culture, Patricia Bloxom 2012 Virginia Commonwealth University

Eastern Shore Stories: Technology, Place, And Local Culture, Patricia Bloxom

Theses and Dissertations

The Eastern Shore of Virginia is a narrow peninsula separating the Chesapeake Bay from the Atlantic Ocean. Residents of the rural counties of Accomack and Northampton County share a strong sense of cultural identity based on geography, rooted in a distinct communal sense of place reinforced by an agricultural lifestyle. Storytelling around dinner tables and on front porches at dusk, speeches at high school graduations, family recipes talked through in a grandmother’s kitchen – it is through oral language that Eastern Shore people have primarily shared the knowledge that sustains their sense of communal identity. Oral knowledge of farming techniques …

Intimate Distance: Negotiating The Urban/Suburban Divide, Whitney L. Sage 2012 Wayne State University

Intimate Distance: Negotiating The Urban/Suburban Divide, Whitney L. Sage

Mid-America College Art Association Conference 2012 Digital Publications

As a native of Farmington Hills, a suburb thirty minutes outside of Detroit, I have always had a peculiar relationship with the city. As a child I visited Detroit often for family outings to the DIA and Tiger Stadium. Hours later we would be driving on I-96 returning west. All of my early memories of Detroit are happy and warm, however they are seen through the rose-colored glass of wide cultural and geographic separation from the city. In this way, my artwork, which discusses Detroit’s past and present through literal representation, radiates nostalgia and expresses both a sense of intimacy …

Creating With Code: Critical Thinking And Digital Foundations, Brad Tober 2012 University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Creating With Code: Critical Thinking And Digital Foundations, Brad Tober

Mid-America College Art Association Conference 2012 Digital Publications

While students are often attracted to opportunities to learn how to use software applications commonly employed by digital artists and designers, the fact remains that time spent on purely software-based instruction in the classroom is time that could arguably be better spent on exploring the broader conceptual issues of making digital work. This presentation begins to frame an argument for the comprehensive integration of code-based technologies, such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Processing/Java, openFrameworks/C++, and Objective-C, into digital art and design foundation curricula. This integration holds the potential to position code-based technologies as new media for teaching art and design alongside …

Hi, Magic Closet, Tell Me What To Wear!, Si Liu, Tam Nguyen, Jiashi Feng, Meng Wang, Shuicheng Yan 2012 National University of Singapore

Hi, Magic Closet, Tell Me What To Wear!, Si Liu, Tam Nguyen, Jiashi Feng, Meng Wang, Shuicheng Yan

Computer Science Faculty Publications

In this demo, we present a practical system, "magic closet," for automatic occasion-oriented clothing pairing. Given a user-input occasion, e.g., wedding or shopping, the magic closet intelligently and automatically pairs the user-specified reference clothing (upper body or lower body) with the most suitable one from online shops. Two key criteria are explicitly considered for the magic closet system. One criterion is to dress properly, e.g., compared to suit pants, it is more decent to wear a cocktail dress for a banquet occasion. The other criterion is to dress aesthetically, e.g., a red T-shirt matches better with white pants than with …

Circulating Collections Book Repair Manual, Marianne Swanberry Hanley 2012 Syracuse University

Circulating Collections Book Repair Manual, Marianne Swanberry Hanley

Treatment Manuals

The audience for this manual are work-study students and library technicians working charged with repairing items from our circulating book collection. Be careful because a repair done incorrectly can cause more harm than good if you are not sure don’t do it. Never be afraid to ask, no question is too small.

It is important to maintain control over your work. Work should be neat and organized. When new staff is hired they are trained by an experienced person and given manuals for reference. Each employee’s work is reviewed periodically to be certain that they understand the principles and techniques …

Platten En Perkament, Peter D. Verheyen, Marlene Hoogeveen (Translator)

Librarian Publications

Translation into Dutch for Handboekbinden (Journal of the Stichting Handboekbinden) by Marlene Hoogeveen of: Peter D. Verheyen. "Vellum on Boards" The Guild of Book Workers Journal 39 (2004). Vellum is arguably one of the most beautiful binding materials in use, and at the same time one of the least used in modern design bindings. While it is often used in limp bindings, its use “over hard boards” has been much more limited. A study of the bookbinding literature reveals it being covered in-depth to a larger degree in German language trade manuals than in English. This could explain their seemingly …

Journals

Exhibition Notes, Number 42, Fall 2012. Ranging from quaint stereotypes of Mexican identity to current socio-economic and art-world commentary, Alejandro Diaz’s text-based works and installations use language as a form of cultural critique and resistance. Conceptual and campy, his humor infused politics and choice of everyday materials are emblematic of his ongoing involvement with art as a form of entertainment, activism, public intervention, and free enterprise. His projects take place outdoors on city streets as well as inside galleries and museums.

Bent Out Of Shape Embodied Knowledge In The Art Of Copper Repoussé, Tierney Brown 2012 SIT Study Abroad

Bent Out Of Shape Embodied Knowledge In The Art Of Copper Repoussé, Tierney Brown

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Over the course of a 1,300 year history the Newar art of moulding copper into fine architectural ornaments and full bodied sacred figures has been passed through family lineages and working apprenticeships. Presently the copper repoussé technique has continued to elude a regulated school format instead favoring individual apprenticeships in the workshops and homes of more experienced artists. In a two week short-apprenticeship and study in Sajan Raj Shakya's workshop in Mangchal Tole, Patan I was instructed in the basics of creating copper forms through repoussé and chasing. This experience is documented both in terms of the delineated process for …
