Various theories have examined cultural influences and how individuals attribute the outcome of various situations. This paper discusses past theories of the reasons behind shame and guilt and conducts a study that examines how social rank, or lack thereof, could affect a person’s emotional response. It was predicted that when the participants, consisting of college undergraduates and residents of a private community, are primed towards feelings of superordination or equality, via vignettes, they would …

Electrospun Plant Protein Scaffolds With Fibers Oriented Randomly And Evenly In Three-Dimensions For Soft Tissue Engineering Applications, Shaobo Cai 2013 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Electrospun Plant Protein Scaffolds With Fibers Oriented Randomly And Evenly In Three-Dimensions For Soft Tissue Engineering Applications, Shaobo Cai

Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In this work, electrospinnable and water stable soyprotein was extracted by using a reducing agent in mild alkaline condition, and novel 3D zein and 3D pure soyprotein electrospun scaffolds with three-dimensionally and randomly oriented fibers and large interconnected pores were successfully fabricated by reducing surface resistivity of materials. This unique structure is different from most electrospun scaffolds with fibers oriented mainly in one direction. The structure of novel 3D scaffolds could more closely mimic the 3D randomly oriented fibrous architectures in many native extracellular matrixes (ECM). Confocal laser scanning microscope shows that instead of becoming flattened cells when cultured in …

Real Time Visibility Culling With Hardware Occlusion Queries And Uniform Grids, Ilya Iseletsk Seletsky 2013 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Real Time Visibility Culling With Hardware Occlusion Queries And Uniform Grids, Ilya Iseletsk Seletsky

Master's Theses

Culling out non-visible portions of 3D scenes is important for rendering large complex worlds at an interactive frame rate. Past 3D engines used static prebaked visibility data which was generated using complex algorithms. Hardware Occlusion Queries are a modern feature that allows engines to determine if objects are invisible on the fly. This allows for fully dynamic destructible and editable environments as opposed to static prebaked environments of the past. This paper presents an algorithm that uses Hardware Occlusion Queries to cull fully dynamic scenes in real-time. This algorithm is relatively simple in comparison to other real-time occlusion culling techniques, …

Projection Based Design: A Collection Of Acquired Knowledge, Max Brown 2013 California Polytechnic State University - San Luis Obispo

Projection Based Design: A Collection Of Acquired Knowledge, Max Brown

Liberal Arts and Engineering Studies

The application of new technology in a classic medium, such as theatre, can be a strong force in creating a unique experience for both the audience and the designer. At first, introducing new media techniques may seem like a novelty and easily dismissed as a gimmick. The fact is the modern audience is more familiar with information displayed in video format and will find projected video elements implemented into the scenic design as another way to access the story the performers on stage are trying to convey. It is our duty as designers to utilize every tool at our disposal …

An English art and design college was the setting for this project which aimed to improve the transition of Access students into design Higher Education (HE). The Access course is made up of non-traditional, mature students who may have no previous formal qualifications. They come from diverse backgrounds, ethnicities and nationalities; often overcoming barriers to education in order to fulfil their ambitions to study on a design degree. Previous research had discovered that Access students were susceptible to dropping out during the first year of their degrees. In order to improve the critical thinking and resilience of Access students staff …

Examining The Textile Design Creative Practice Research-Teaching Nexus, Helena Britt 2013 The Glasgow School of Art, Department of Fashion & Textiles

Examining The Textile Design Creative Practice Research-Teaching Nexus, Helena Britt

Learn X Design Conference Series

Due to the nature of higher education (HE) in the United Kingdom (UK) educators often operate under pressure. This can be connected to requirements to undertake research and produce outputs, linked to funding awarded to HE institutions (HEIs). Approaches to research that utilise professional and or creative practice are adopted and formulated, prompting use of terms such as ‘practice-led’ and ‘practicebased’. Variation in opinion exists regarding research and creative practice by academic staff and within HEIs. The positive impact that educator research and or creative practice bring to the educational environment, learning and teaching has been recognised. Textile design exists …

Visual Grammar: A Literature Review, Karen Brænne 2013 Volda University College; Department of Art and Physical Education

Visual Grammar: A Literature Review, Karen Brænne

Learn X Design Conference Series

Based on a database query and a manual search of Nordic literature about visual grammar, this article provides an overview analysis of six Norwegian contributions. The question in mind during this analysis concerns how the current academic theory of visual grammar is presented, and in particular, its purpose, the way it is systematized, its degree of theoretical discussion and its view of knowledge. In different ways, these contributions have an art- and/or design educational purpose. From this overview analysis, three elected topics were discussed: The degree of systematic and schematic representation, the discussion of the origin and construction of visual …

Student Goes On A Journey; Stranger Rides Into To The Classroom: Narratives And The Instructor In The Design Studio, Elizabeth Boling, Martin A. Siegel, Kennon M. Smith, Patrick Parrish

Learn X Design Conference Series

Enthusiasm is growing in non-traditional environments for teaching design by adapting knowledge and approaches from studio pedagogy, described as a “signature pedagogy” by Shulman in 2005. Meanwhile, those in fields where some variation of studio pedagogy have been used for decades are engaged in addressing some of its experienced shortcomings. Within this landscape of change, the authors have been engaged in study of their own studio-based courses, (interior design, instructional design, and interaction/experience design), reflecting on how this form of pedagogy is contributing to students’ development as designers. In this study we consider the role of the instructor in the …

Ecological Literacy In Design Education: A Foundation For Sustainable Design, Joanna Boehnert 2013 EcoLabs, University of the Arts London

Ecological Literacy In Design Education: A Foundation For Sustainable Design, Joanna Boehnert

Learn X Design Conference Series

Responsible design in an era of scarcity and risk associated with environmental problems must be ecologically informed. Ecological literacy is necessary in order to both understand the nature of environmental problems and to respond effectively by designing sustainable ways of living. Embedding ecological literacy into design education is happening at the most progressive institutions – and yet for many others, sustainability education is still virtually absent from the curriculum. Progress is slow despite the fact that natural scientists warn that risks will escalate if we do not take dramatic action. Ecological literacy is a severe challenge as it disrupts educational …

Design as a discipline has been discussing its body of knowledge from different perspectives. An area that will bring new insights to such discussion is a better understanding of how the knowledge in teaching has been constructed and expanded. Using Maryellen Weimer's perspective and classification scheme on the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL), this study aims to descriptively analyze the disciplinary pedagogy in design. The content of 174 pedagogical articles published from 1999 to 2010 in three design journals were analyzed. Findings show that in design, experience-based and research-based approaches to SoTL have almost equal significance. The plurality in …

I “Like” Design: Participatory Web Sites And Design Lessons For The Masses, Mary Anne Beecher

Learn X Design Conference Series

In North America, published advice literature and design-based television and radio programming served as prominent vehicles for communicating lessons about what or what not to do when making their own interior design decisions to the general public in the twentieth century. This passive approach to teaching the lessons of design has been supplemented in recent years by a more interactive model: the participatory web site. This research is a qualitative analysis of social media platforms, independent web sites and blogs that monitor and promote new contemporary works from around the world and this paper focuses on the content of four: …
