Design Philosophy

I strive to meet others in their wholeness and individuality. To see them as unique individuals. The end goal is to create modern spaces that contribute to the health, safety, and welfare of the public. I design to bring a genuine smile to the many people I encounter.

Always reminded that each space needs to be as beautiful as its future owner. Therefore, we must always keep in mind to stay dedicated to the job and always respect the value of craftsmanship. Bringing contemporary design to a new client is always a thrill, but bringing satisfaction …

Working Women: Contemporary Cinematic Costumes In "Desk Set" And "Working Girl", Karen Hummel Kinsley 2014 CUNY Graduate Center

Working Women: Contemporary Cinematic Costumes In "Desk Set" And "Working Girl", Karen Hummel Kinsley

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The contemporary cinematic costume designer is a visual storyteller. Through the dressing, or undressing of the actor's body, the costume designer narrates the cinematic character's physical and psychological journey from the first frame to the final credits. The costume designer creates the character's image by selecting specific garments and accessories that will inform the audience about the character's relationship with his cinematic environment.

The focus of this thesis is to examine how the contemporary cinematic costume designer unifies contemporary clothing with the actor's body to narrate a cinematic character's story. In order to understand how the costume designer creates a …

Philosophy of Design

A space is an opportunity to express yourself with color, texture, pattern, and shape. It is my goal to create a space that meets my client’s vision and allows them to love their space more than they ever have. An Interior Designer is simply the phase between an idea and reality.

Allusions To Home, Gary Barton, Lisa F. Jones 2014 Brigham Young University

Allusions To Home, Gary Barton, Lisa F. Jones

Journal of Undergraduate Research

What differentiates a home from a shelter? What is a mother’s role in creating the environment we call home? What role does art and craft play in the creation of that environment? These are some of the questions I had in mind as I began this project. Although I had been working in a similar direction the previous year, I found that the questions I chose to address in my project presented a challenge, because home holds different meanings for each of us. There are many possible answers to each of the questions, all according to a persons experience. The …

Summary On Fishy Swoi, Sam R. Kennedy, Brent Adams, Richard Hull 2014 Brigham Young University

Summary On Fishy Swoi, Sam R. Kennedy, Brent Adams, Richard Hull

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Fishy Swoi is a story about a gold fish that is trying out for the part in Jaws. It began as an idea that three students had in one of my animation classes. We created a two and a half minute script and began to animate it in the computer labs of the Brimhall. Although we had were in classes that required much work outside of class and that we were primarily illustrators and not animators, I and my two friends courageously put in extra hours. That was winter semester of 1997. Below is my best analysis of what has …

Examination Of Possible Symbolism Of The Carved Apes Represented In Jan Van Eyck’S Ghent Altarpiece (1425-32), David Jeppesen, Dr. Martha Peacock 2014 Brigham Young University

Examination Of Possible Symbolism Of The Carved Apes Represented In Jan Van Eyck’S Ghent Altarpiece (1425-32), David Jeppesen, Dr. Martha Peacock

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Traditionally, apes represent sin and the fallen state of mankind in medieval and renaissance art. Applying this interpretation to all apes represented in art can prove troubling, however, as in Jan van Eyck’s Ghent Altarpiece (1425-32). This altarpiece painted by the Flemish master for St. Bavo’s Cathedral in Ghent, Belgium, is a celebration of Christ as the mystic lamb of God. It’s exterior features the scene of the Annunciation of Christ’s birth as well as the sibyls and prophets who foretold it. The interior portrays not only Christ crowned and enthroned above the world, flanked by Mary, John the Beloved …

Orca Scholarship Report, Joe Jackson, Linda Sullivan 2014 Brigham Young University

Orca Scholarship Report, Joe Jackson, Linda Sullivan

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Studying the visual and written literacy of high school kids has proved interesting and has lead to a couple of interesting conclusions, as well as sparked my interest into further study and research in the field of semiotics. What I discovered is the inseparable link between word literacy and visual symbol interpretation. Inseparably connected because of the semiotic nature of symbols and their connection to written origins. I also learned that there is a significant gap in the knowledge of certain information received over the television, internet, and movies between the east coast and western United States.

Eccentric, Darrell Tousley, Brian Christensen 2014 Brigham Young University

Eccentric, Darrell Tousley, Brian Christensen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The definition of eccentric is to deviate from an established pattern or form, accepted usage or conduct. I feel that this one word describes best what I do. The decision do this piece was based on the simple idea that lifting more weight can make you stronger. I believe this to be true with talents as well as with muscles. Though I do not see it as my strongest piece, I feel it was the work most critical in the series I have pursued. Beginning with a formal idea that started with the artistic element of movement, I learned how …

Environments For One – Three Years Old Consideration For Children With Autism, Allison Sschreiber, Dr. Peggy Honey

Kids on the Move, is an organization that helps children with mental handicaps become integrated into society. With this cause, comes a special need to create the right environment for these children. Great care must be taken with every material and component, as to not distract, irritate, or create a lethargic feeling in the environment.

Psychoanalysis And The Art Of G.F. Watts, Stephanie E. McNairy, Dr. Martha Peacock 2014 Brigham Young University

Psychoanalysis And The Art Of G.F. Watts, Stephanie E. Mcnairy, Dr. Martha Peacock

Journal of Undergraduate Research

“He came to stay three days: he stayed thirty years,” wrote Sara Pattle Prinsep of her houseguest George Frederic Watts. In 1850, Mr. and Mrs. Prinsep signed a twenty-one year lease for the estate at Little Holland House in London. Shortly after moving in, Mrs. Prinsep asked Victorian artist G.F. Watts to stay with her family so that she could tend to his poor health. Mrs. Prinsep played an important role in Watts’ life. It was upon his introduction to Sara Pattle Prinsep and her single sister Virginia that Watts began his dependence on women to care for him and …

Tongan Children And Their Play Things, Ashley Knudsen, W. Wayne Kimball Jr. 2014 Brigham Young University

Tongan Children And Their Play Things, Ashley Knudsen, W. Wayne Kimball Jr.

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I had a hard time getting started on this project when I first arrived on the Tongan islands. My body was trying to acclimate to the immense humidity it was being drenched in. Our whole group vegged around the fan as if all energy had been zapped from us. But after adjustments to both jet lag and climate had occurred I was ready to begin.

Art Health Therapy, Jordan Inouye, Dr. Mark Magleby 2014 Brigham Young University

Art Health Therapy, Jordan Inouye, Dr. Mark Magleby

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Think about the process of painting a picture. Is it possible to use only an intuitive approach to achieve a work’s composition, proportion, and color scheme? No, an art work always requires a minimal amount of rational thought. Now think of practicing medicine. Can a doctor cure a person through purely analytical techniques, focusing only on physical symptoms? Of course not. Factors such as emotional being, social awareness, and psychological state are of great significance in examining patients. Whether it be in clinical settings, private practices, or community hospitals, art health therapy helps break down the emotional and psychological barriers …

Elizabeth Baumann Jerichau And Hans Christian Andersen’S “The Little Mermaid”, Elizabeth Cramer, Dr. Mark Magleby 2014 Brigham Young University

Elizabeth Baumann Jerichau And Hans Christian Andersen’S “The Little Mermaid”, Elizabeth Cramer, Dr. Mark Magleby

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Denmark was not immune to the Orientalist trend which swept Europe in the nineteenth-century. The famous fairy tale writer, Hans Christian Andersen and his artist friend, Elizabeth Baumann Jerichau, both lived in Copenhagen, and were heavily involved in the current interest in the art, people, and culture of the “exotic East.” The purpose of my research was to investigate the Orientalist overtones of The Little Mermaid, both in the fairy tale written by Andersen in 1837 and the interpretive painting by Jerichau in 1862.

Cancer: A Portrait Of Survival, Angela Pierce, John Telford 2014 Brigham Young University

Cancer: A Portrait Of Survival, Angela Pierce, John Telford

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My essay is a photographic exploration into the personal strength of people who are winning the fight against Cancer. Different from most images of cancer which evoke feelings of helplessness and pity, I wanted to show cancer as a disease that can be beaten, to show survivors who are stronger for their experience. To show people who have come away with stronger character, no matter what their age or experience. I tried to show a broad cross section of ages and philosophies since cancer affects all varieties of people. These portraits were taken on locations that showed something about the …

Analog/Digital, Pencils And Compact Discs, Isaac Howard, Peter Everett 2014 Brigham Young University

Analog/Digital, Pencils And Compact Discs, Isaac Howard, Peter Everett

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I sometimes fall into patterns where I continue to make art even though I’m not really interested in what I’m doing, simply going through the motions of art making. I generally find my way out of these slumps when I re-examine what is important to me, what my curiosities are, and what simply sounds fun to do. The ORCA grant I received allowed me to begin exploring the relationship between art, space, and sound. These dimensions are an area in art that I have always been passionate about. Working on this project has given me a new direction for my …

The Development Of Student Creativity Through A Comprehensive Art Curriculum, Robin Shinsel Jorgensen, Donna Kay Beattie 2014 Brigham Young University

The Development Of Student Creativity Through A Comprehensive Art Curriculum, Robin Shinsel Jorgensen, Donna Kay Beattie

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My purpose in designing a comprehensive art curriculum is an attempt to elicit and foster creative thinking, and creative art production. This project was inspired by two months that I spent in China and Thailand studying their art education system. I observed their techniques, based mostly on repeating the styles of old masters, and concluded that their style of teaching produces great technical artists, but these students also lack creative direction. Upon reflection of my studies abroad, I realized that my education in art was not vastly different from the methods used in the Pacific rim. A contemporary, creativity based …
