Within the field of semiotics, methods of communication (languages) are separated into three distinct categories: signifier, signified, and sign. The signifier is a thing, like a ball. The signified is a definition or concept of the thing: a ball is a spherical object. When the signifier and signified are combined, the result is the sign. The French semiotician Roland Barthes in his essay, “Myth Today,” stated that “the signifier is empty, the sign is full, it is a meaning.” He goes on to equate the “sign” with the “word,” or in other words, the symbol which acts as proxy for …

Gethsemane Series, Sarah Ludlow, Robert Barrett
Journal of Undergraduate Research
From my Fall 1998 submission of an ORCA proposal, I have since been extremely involved in the completion of my proposed project. As an Illustration major seeking a religious emphasis, I feel that the worth of a picture is to develop and motivate the mind to a better understanding of the truths of this eternal world. I proposed to paint a series of five large narrative paintings depicting the last three hours of Christ’s life in the Garden of Gethsemane. Because of the sacred nature of this project I felt like it was very important to increase my own knowledge …

Illustration has the ability to create awareness of different cultures in a way that can educate and inspire. As the church continues to expand globally, the leaders of the church have recognized the need for increased understanding and appreciation of the rich ethnic diversity which exists. President Hinckley stated, “We must resolve to live together in a society of men and women of diverse backgrounds, interests, and cultures. We must live with respect and tolerance and understanding one for another. We can and should retain our individuality, and respect that of others, while nurturing together a great society dedicated to …

Summary Of Creative Research – Furniture Design, Virgil Loggins Merrill, David Taylor
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The objective of this research project was to design and create two original pieces of furniture. The conclusion was much more. There were initially two developments to this project, the first being the design process, and the second being the manufacturing process. Through the design process I was able to deal mainly with the aesthetics of the two pieces of furniture. As I tread through the stairway of my imagination, I produced drawing after drawing until I had decided upon the two pieces of furniture. The one being a table, and the other, being a chair. The design process is …

Preserving A Heritage: A Cross-Cultural Comparative Study Of Weaving And Women, Ellen O'Neil, Dr. Martha Peacock
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The original concept for my research was to compare weaving between cultures and the roles of women in the creation of woven art. I approached the subject with much excitement, as woven art has been a part of my life since birth. In having the opportunity to go to France, my study of weaving consisted of tapestries and the history of textiles. Upon returning home, I was able to spend six glorious weeks with my grandmother learning how to weave.

For Those At Home: The Romantic Nature Of Civil War Lithography, Megan A. Sutter
The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History
Lithography, the art of drawing on stone, was an important part of American Victorian culture during the Civil War. Not only did lithography provide news in pictorial form, but it also was widely displayed in the home. With the economic move from home to factory during the early 19th century, the home became more of a “sanctuary” in which women could decorate and display. [excerpt]

During the past two years I have developed a body of work that’s centered on these sculptural boat forms. I became interested in the boat as a symbol while learning about the burial rites of the AngloSaxons and Vikings. These peoples believed by burying their dead In a ship, or by including a representation of a boat at the grave site, that the souls of their dead were assured passage into the after life. The sculptural boat forms that I have made are meant to also depict this theme of voyage. They are to represent different episodes of man’s voyage …

Beyond The Canvas: Digital Art Tools In The 3rd Dimension, Todd Sheridan
Journal of Undergraduate Research
A revolution is occurring in the way artists and designers create imagery. While computers have long been a valuable tool for photograph manipulation, only recently have the programs necessary for creating original content become publicly available. Three-dimensional imaging software is a key player in this revolution. The very tools that were used to create the dinosaurs in Steven Spielberg’s film jurassic Park are now available and affordable for artists to use in creating still imagery. However, availability and affordability are not the only factors one must consider when determining whether to adopt three-dimensional imaging as a primary tool.

One of America’s most important and extensive photographic collections is housed in the archives of the Library of Congress. These photographs, numbering over 250,000, do not contain images of America’s exploration or development, but rather document the national plight of the Great Depression. They recorded in sharp and often harsh documentary form the exhausted land, the wind belted farmer, and poor children in rags.

An Explanation On The Impact Of The Transversal Barrel Vault At St-Philibert Of Tournus, Carl A. Carlson Iii
Journal of Undergraduate Research
While Romanesque churches are characterized by a longitudinal barrel vault over the nave, some unusual examples of vaulting from the period. Like an endangered species, St-Philibert of Tournus stands as a monument to these diverse examples. In place of a longitudinal barrel vault, the nave is covered by a series of transversal barrel vaults (fig. 1 & 2). Not only does this research paper seek to place this phoneme in Western architecture and explain its limited repercussions, but it also addresses its unresolved origin.

The Size Of An Idea 118, Jared R. Lynn
Journal of Undergraduate Research
My proposal was to create five larger than life-size heads out of aluminum. I did this to explore the importance of scale in the perception of sculptural objects. Scale, in this instance, is the size of an object as it relates to the viewer. If an object, is larger, it has more presence. Consequently, it will hold the viewers attention longer. My sculpted heads are much larger than normal human heads, and therefore they portray larger than normal human emotions. Outlined below is a brief chronicle of the process required to complete this endeavor.

I received the Research and Creative Works Grant Scholarship to pursue a project concerning our “sense of place” in the western United States. The concept was to travel to six major cities west of the Rockies (Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Francisco, Salt Lake, and Seattle) and collect an extensive amount of two types of images from each city. The two types of images to be collected were moving film images taken by actually being in a place, and mass media images representing that same place. I intended to keep in mind the differences between the attitudes I felt …

In the original proposal, I indicated that this Creative Research Grant would enable me to widen my scope of artistic ability and possibility. My ability would improve through increased production which this grant would make possible through the purchase of materials and tools. The results of being accepted for this grant was a large body of work, which consisted of 25 pieces, supported by original poetry and a four page paper that explained the ideas behind the visual work. The work was completed between Jan.- june 1995. Opening night was June 19, and the show lasted until the 30th. It …

However, this has not occurred without revision and change along the road of research and discovery.

I have been working with a group of about 20 students on a completely computer animated cartoon named “Rupert”. The cartoon will be approximately 5 minutes long and deals with a young boy who learns about microbes. Whenever he hears new details about microbes, we see what Rupert images that the microbes would look like that perform that particular function. For example, when Rupert hears that microbes can make us sick, he imagines microbes with weapons on the attack while when he hears that microbes are used to make some foods, he imagines a factory where all the workers are …
