Educating For Democracy, Fred W. Michel 2014 Butler University

Educating For Democracy, Fred W. Michel

Manuscripts

Education in a democracy must of necessity be of a type which will perpetuate that democracy. This being true, our problem automatically resolves itself into the discussion of three questions: What is education? What is democracy? What elements must be present in the ideal educational system which will further the democracy that nourishes it?

Prophecy, Joan Fuller 2014 Butler University

Prophecy, Joan Fuller

Manuscripts

It was in the days of the great wars when tyrants and despots were conquering the world and all peoples were ground into the earth. And it happened that signs and portents of disaster began to be apparent in all places. There were storms upon the sun and great spots, and on the earth explosions and eruptions of mountains and risings of the sea in great waves and many storms on sea and on land. And at that time prophets began to arise, Jews and Gentiles, old men and young, and women And they all began to prophesy the end …

"Synthesizing Cubism And Surrealism: Wifredo Lam's 1940s Cuban Works", Kelsey Winiarsky 2014 Bowling Green State University

"Synthesizing Cubism And Surrealism: Wifredo Lam's 1940s Cuban Works", Kelsey Winiarsky

Africana Studies Student Research Conference (2013-2019)

As a modernist artist, Wifredo Lam used issues of racial degradation and colonialism as a catalyst to create work that directly addressed issues of colonialism in Cuba. Akin to Picasso’s process of appropriating of African motifs within a modern, Cubist style, Wifredo Lam created and appropriated a pastiche of both Surrealistic and Cubist styles into his 1940s paintings. The utilization of these modern styles engendered Lam’s international reputation while providing him with a powerful, creative outlet to express his struggle as an Afro-Cuban. Through the use of African masks and the Santería religion in his paintings during this time period, …

Word And Image Of The ‘Other’: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Georg Forster’S “Voyage Round The World” In Comparison To William Hodges’ Paintings Produced During Captain Cook’S 2nd Voyage, Philip Thomas, Joe Ostraff

I’ll never forget the moment sitting in the large workshop in the basement of Rangi Kipa’s house in Ohope, New Zealand, when he talked about his art and especially the Paraka carvings, a shape based off the prow figure found on traditional Maori Waka (a canoe like watercraft). Kipa, a leading contemporary sculptor, carver, and tattoo artist from New Zealand and Maori, explained that the Paraka has come to represent Kipa’s navigation of his art, which looks back into the customary art techniques, but also forward into the modern art world. It prompts a re-examination of the past identity of …

The Diabetes Hope Project: Creating A Resource For Children Diagnosed With Type 1 Diabetes & Their Parent’S, Maria Mercer, Robert Barrett 2014 Brigham Young University

The Diabetes Hope Project: Creating A Resource For Children Diagnosed With Type 1 Diabetes & Their Parent’S, Maria Mercer, Robert Barrett

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Of the 25.8 million children and adults with diabetes in America, only about 5% of those are diagnosed as Type 1.1 Type 1 diabetes is a lifelong disease managed, but not cured, through insulin therapy via injections or an insulin pump. Diagnosed mainly in children and adolescents under 20, Type 1 diabetes is an overwhelming change in the lives of those diagnosed and their families. It is from personally dealing with Type 1 that I came up with the idea of the HOPE project. Knowing how difficult and overwhelming the transition from normal to diabetic life is, I realized it …

The test group was comprised of thirty children chosen in infancy: all unwanted pregnancies that would have been wasted in public institutions far inferior to ours, without the extensive opportunities for education, for progress. The children required no mothers in our program. Had they ever wished to know their origins, they might have perused the metal file cabinet in which all of their files were kept, right down to the looping signatures of the women who had signed their lives to us. They never did; they were taught better, instructed that origins were of little consequence when compared with the …

The trees were bare, twisting around themselves in a lifeless way. Some leaned, almost sagging with agony, while the rest remained erect, giving only the illusion of vigor. There were six of them; six black, dead trees forming a circle around her grave. Each wailed as the wind thrashed at their degenerate forms. Winter had eradicated autumn, mercilessly ravishing the land of all viability.
