Web-Based Ives For User Experience Evaluation In The Architecture Studio, Faithful Oladeji 2021 University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Web-Based Ives For User Experience Evaluation In The Architecture Studio, Faithful Oladeji

Frameless

Research on the use of immersive virtual environments (IVEs) in architectural design has rapidly permeated the practice for the last few decades, largely driven by a single prospect: the possibility of sufficiently simulating the genuine interactions and experiences of a design well before it is actually built. The implications of this achievement when fully realized would revolutionize the profession, effectively igniting a new period of David Harvey’s space-time compression in the industry, such that IVEs would enable designers to, symbolically, cross temporal distances, and bring a legitimate experience of their final products to the present, at any point in their …

Revenge Of The Lawn, Jason James Wallin 2021 University of Alberta

Revenge Of The Lawn, Jason James Wallin

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

A great irony of the present moment involves the return of objects long thought rallied to the will of man. As growing consensus in climate change research submits, the world presumably given to the mastery of man today returns as an alien force of material and conceptual upheaval. It is against this backdrop of rapid ecological transformation and its cultural impacts that Revenge of the Lawn is situated. As a work of speculative philo-fiction, Revenge of the Lawn surveys the horror of being “read” from the vantage of the non-human as it exists astride and yet withdraws from human melodrama …

Typographic Interventions: Disruptive Letterforms In Public Space, Clark A. Goldsberry 2021 Brigham Young University - Provo

Typographic Interventions: Disruptive Letterforms In Public Space, Clark A. Goldsberry

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

We are surrounded by typography—on billboards, aluminum cans, pill bottles, and pixelated screens—but artists and art teachers, seeking out the materiality of their lived environments, should be able to look at text in different ways. Many artists utilize letterforms as a medium of juxtaposition and recontextualization (Gude, 2004) by placing text in places we don’t expect to see it, or they subvert the messages we expect to read. Typographic interventions can be seen everywhere, by all types of artists, makers, activists, and dissidents. These interruptions could be framed as forms of socially engaged art (Helguera, 2011; Mueller, 2020) that “suspend …

All Changelings Have Autism: How To Make A Better Book For Autistic Children, Nadia L. Hitchcock 2021 Portland State University

All Changelings Have Autism: How To Make A Better Book For Autistic Children, Nadia L. Hitchcock

University Honors Theses

How should a content creator, whether they work in film, literature, or sequential art, approach portrayals of Autistic characters? More specifically, how should these altruistic ideas be translated into a better storybook for Autistic children? This is the challenge that I have addressed with my Graphic Design thesis, by writing and illustrating my own children's picture book. The story itself is a spiritual successor to Old World changeling folktales and All Cats Have Asperger's Syndrome (Kathy Hoopman 2006). Though many Autistic people loved Hoopman's book as children, its visual shortcomings and linguistic oversights have marred its intended inclusive, positive message. …

Burnt Out: Encouraging Breaks And Lessening Burnout Symptoms In A Digital Landscape, Maria Miranda 2021 Portland State University

Burnt Out: Encouraging Breaks And Lessening Burnout Symptoms In A Digital Landscape, Maria Miranda

University Honors Theses

This thesis project aims to create a website that’ll promote ways to lessen burnout symptoms and encourage taking efficient breaks in one’s daily routine. Burnout is a term formed in the 1970s to reflect the mental and physical toll employees experienced due to high amounts of stress brought up by the workplace. Since then the term burnout has expanded beyond the workplace and speaks directly to the experiences of graphic design students during the pandemic. Proper recovery from burnout is a crucial step, as neglecting care can lead to worsening conditions for the mind and body. By understanding the three …

Mapping The Case Study Houses: Translating History Via Design, Samuel L. Person 2021 Portland State University

Mapping The Case Study Houses: Translating History Via Design, Samuel L. Person

University Honors Theses

In this paper, I detail the process of creating a book titled The Case Study Houses: A Field Guide, a project meant to fill a gap in the scholarship on the Case Study Houses, one of the most influential architectural programs of the 20th century. I provide an overview of existing scholarship on the program, in addition to its shortcomings, and how my project addresses these by translating that body of work into an approachable, modern, yet no less informational format. My research process involved concatenating various informational sources into one cohesive whole that provides a standardized presentation …

Portland Park Signage: An Exploration Into Reimaging Placemaking, Samuel Garcia 2021 Portland State University

Portland Park Signage: An Exploration Into Reimaging Placemaking, Samuel Garcia

University Honors Theses

In this paper I outline the rebrand for Portland Park Signage discussing the role between signage and visitor experience. I researched the fundamentals of user experience in physical space in the hope of beginning to understand how people connect with and interpret space into meaning. In doing so I discovered that providing visitors with a variety of experiences was key to developing positive experiences in public space which I attempted to interpret into the design of the sign itself. I did so by providing viewers with a variety of ways to interact with the sign as well as a variety …

Native App Ux With A Social Design Emphasis, Katya Rozanova 2021 CUNY City College

Native App Ux With A Social Design Emphasis, Katya Rozanova

Open Educational Resources

This course is designed to teach students how to design user experiences (UX) for native applications for mobile devices while considering what types of digital products can and should be put out into the world as tools for the day-to-day, as speculative art projects, or as forms of resistance to existing systems in place. The course focuses on usability heuristics, research (human-centered design methodologies) and competitive analysis, information architecture, rapid prototyping and usability testing. Students will familiarize themselves with native UI elements in Apple and Android platforms and design for one of the platforms of their choice. They will learn …

Material Encounters: Making Memory Beyond The Mind, Ariel Wills 2021 Rhode Island School of Design

Material Encounters: Making Memory Beyond The Mind, Ariel Wills

Masters Theses

Can acts of making carry the memories of our embeddedness within the world? This thesis explores how making things can nurture a sense of kinship that cuts across the organic and inorganic, erasing the distinction between living and dead, material and spiritual. Through handwork such as art-making, sewing, knitting, cooking, woodworking, and beyond, the burden of remembering and of archiving is shared across human and non-human bodies, cultivated through practices of making, and through the materials themselves. By recounting the stories of my family’s experience as Jewish immigrants in the United States, I aim to reveal how their domestic practices …
