When Native Hawaiians and haole (foreigners) first met, both participants belonged to fashion systems unknown to the other, composed of different materials, styles, tastes, standards, and construction techniques. As the outside world was introduced to the cultural heritage of Hawaiian hulu manu (featherwork), kūkaulani (chiefly fashion), and European skewed conceptions of Hawaiian indigeneity; the ali‘i (chiefs) and kama‘āina (commoners) received and adapted to incoming materials, technologies, and information. When these encounters transitioned into “prolonged contact” and settlement, dress and adornment proliferated in new ways. To perform a well-informed conservation treatment on an object, it is crucial to understand its context, history, and significance. When an object presents with little provenance or context, it can be difficult to determine the course that its treatment should follow. In this project, a structurally unstable birch bark canoe model of unknown origin was examined, researched, and treated. The treatment campaign was customized for the object based on literature research, owner consultation, and materials experimentation. The canoe model was structurally stabilized with adhesive and adhesive reactivated Japanese tissue, it was locally humidified and reshaped with Gore-Tex sandwiches, and was …

Prayer is an important part of life for many people, whether it takes the form of meditation or talking to God. Muslims pray five times a day, and before each prayer, they first clean themselves by performing ritual ablution (wudu). The eight-step purification process of wudu cleanses the body from head to toe. The Hadiths of Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim tell us the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ needed just one mudd of water (650ml) to complete wudu, but most people consume many times that amount—four-to-seven liters is more common today.

The following paper describes the technical analysis and conservation treatment of four botanical teaching models from the late 19th century – 20th century from the Buffalo Museum of Science. One of the models was manufactured by French based company, Fil d’Emile Deyrolle. The other three models were manufactured by, Robert and Reinhold Brendel, a father and son team, and the major focus of this paper. Research into the history of model-making will first be explored to understand their significance. The treatment involved two Pennsylvania-German fraktur, which is a highly embellished folk art created by early German settlers in the United States. Digital imagining, visual examination, X-ray Fluorescence and Fourier-Transform Infrared spectroscopy aided the understanding of materials present. The technical analysis of pigments combined with research allowed for a better understanding of how these objects were created, as well as helped tailor an appropriate treatment. Ultimately, due to presence of copper and iron-based pigments, Klucel G in denatured ethyl alcohol was used to provide structural integrity to the objects. A ca. 1925 opera coat, made by Tegler, Inc. in Buffalo, New York, was the focus of a three pronged study: a structural conservation treatment, a technical study, and research into turn of the 20th century dressmaking shops. Characterization of the many components on the coat was performed using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, high performance liquid chromatography, multi-modal imaging, and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. Understanding the chemical and physical properties of various components on the coat aided in determining the treatment methodology as well as providing valuable historical context. A copy of the 1786 edition of Ephraim Chambers’ Cylopaedia was researched and analyzed, developing an informed treatment plan. Imaging techniques and scientific analysis were used to identify materials, revealing details about the original binding structure and later repairs using manuscript waste and textile fragments. Treatment included extensive paper repair to all three volumes and the two gatherings of plates, and strengthening the abbreviated sewing structures with new sewing and spine linings. This complex treatment also involved parchment toning for rebacking material, stabilizing the previous textile repair, and replacing a missing board.

Treating gilded furniture is a complex endeavor requiring an understanding of manufacturing techniques and current methodologies. The giltwood lectern had structural damage from a termite infestation as well as cracks and losses throughout the gilding and gesso. It had undergone a past restorations that replaced the apron, the bottom of the back panel, and the front of the proper right panel. The lectern was analyzed with different imaging technologies including radiography, UVA visible fluorescence, and reflective UVA. A banjo clock featuring reverse glass painted panels with unknown provenance was assessed for conservation treatment. Research into the aesthetics and functionality of the clock, manufacture of clocks in the early United States, patent laws, and historic clock repair was conducted to support the proposed identification of this piece as a 19th century American clock. Conservation ethics regarding functional objects were considered and previous treatments of reverse glass paintings were studied. Materials within the many elements of the clock were analyzed and extensive adhesive testing was executed to find the appropriate consolidant to stabilize the painted glass panels. Treatment …

Non-Objective I (After Mondrian) is a silkscreen on paper printed in four colors (red, yellow, blue, and black) made after Roy Lichtenstein’s 1964 painting of the same name. The print arrived at the Garman Art Conservation Department tightly rolled, with significant discoloration and mechanical damage resulting from rolled storage in an uncontrolled environment that disfigured the flat, matte fields of printing ink. The before-treatment state of the object hindered the overall aesthetic appreciation of the artwork as well as its purpose as a reproduction of the painting. According to a survey, the healthcare industry is one of the least cloud-adopting industries. The low adoption reflects the healthcare industry's ongoing concerns about the security of the cloud. Business applications, according to another survey, are among the most vulnerable components of business information systems. Many risk assessment frameworks available today, particularly for health information applications, require significant customization before they can be used. This literary review will focus on Michelangelo’s most significant work of color: the Sistine ceiling. Michelangelo’s work has spawned a plethora of literature, but this paper will focus on three main controversial topics: assistants (or lack thereof), the ignudi’s purpose, and restoration. I will also apply a psycho-historical approach to these controversies and identify potential avenues for future research.
