Mona Shattell

This paper reports feasibility issues with the implementation of an intervention study for depression in Latina women from Mexico living in an emerging immigrant community in the United States. Based on the PRECEDE-PROCEED model, the study explores implementation issues such as the intervention and retention; logistical issues such as transportation and childcare; and possible measurement issues such as reliability and validity of the CES-D, Spanish version. Future studies should evaluate the CES-D, Spanish version, and test the modified cognitive behavioral group therapy intervention in larger samples and through randomized controlled studies.

An Exploration Of Lifestyle Beliefs And Lifestyle Behaviour Following Stroke: Findings From A Focus Group Study Of Patients And Family Members, Maggie Lawrence, Susan M. Kerr, Hazel E. Watson, Gillian Paton, Graham Ellis

Dr. Maggie Lawrence

Stroke is a major cause of disability and family disruption and carries a high risk of recurrence. Lifestyle factors that increase the risk of recurrence include smoking, unhealthy diet, excessive alcohol consumption and physical inactivity. Guidelines recommend that secondary prevention interventions, which include the active provision of lifestyle information, should be initiated in hospital, and continued by community-based healthcare professionals (HCPs) following discharge. However, stroke patients report receiving little/no lifestyle information.

There is a limited evidence-base to guide the development and delivery of effective secondary prevention lifestyle interventions in the stroke field. This study, which was underpinned by the Theory …

Factors Related To The Recruitment And Retention Of Nurse Practitioners In Rural Areas, Dayle Boynton Sharp 2010 University of Texas at El Paso

Factors Related To The Recruitment And Retention Of Nurse Practitioners In Rural Areas, Dayle Boynton Sharp

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

For the past several decades, rural America has experienced significant health disparities. Changes in the demographics of rural locations in the U.S. have led to a) an increase in an aging population, b) an increase in minority populations, and c) a large number of unemployed individuals due to the shifting of jobs. In some locations, a large number of these unemployed or underemployed are uninsured or underinsured. Parallel to the changes in demographics, there has been a decrease in primary care providers in rural areas. Consequently, rural America is facing reduced and unequal access to healthcare. One solution to limited …

Increased Interleukin-6 Activity Associated With Painful Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy In Women After Breast Cancer Treatment, Angela R. Starkweather

School of Nursing Publications

Accumulating evidence suggests that neural-immune interactions are involved in the development of painful chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy, particularly through the increased release of proinflammatory cytokines. The purpose of this study was used to evaluate levels of interleukin [IL]-6 and IL-6 receptors in women with breast cancer after the conclusion of chemotherapy who either had painful symptoms of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN group, ) or did not experience CIPN symptoms (Comparison group, ). CIPN participants had significantly higher levels of IL-6 and soluble IL-6R (sIL-6R) compared to women without CIPN symptoms ( for both). In addition, soluble gp130, which blocks the IL-6/sIL-6R …

An Initial Investigation Of The Applicability Of The Dreyfus Skill Acquisition Model To The Professional Development Of Nurse Educators, Lisa Ramsburg

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Little is known about the skill and knowledge acquisition of nurses in the educator role. This investigation represents an attempt to design and validate a skill acquisition model for the nurse educator role. While nurse educators often have strong clinical backgrounds, they face a significant role transition as nurse educators. Dreyfus and Dreyfus provided a model for studying skill acquisition in several fields and Benner applied the model to clinical nursing. To investigate skill acquisition among nurse educators, the Dreyfus Model of Skill Acquisition along with the National League for Nursing (NLN) Nurse Educator Competencies provided a framework for the …

Preceptor Coordinators: The Link Connecting Hospital Orientation And Unit Orientation, Tina S. Hunter

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

Orientation is a crucial time for newly hired nurses, both experienced and non-experienced, and this initial training period is a vital function for all healthcare organizations. Being a collaborative process that includes administrators, managers, preceptors, and orientees, formal orientation programs directly influence and are essential in improving staff retention, lowering turnover, increasing productivity and quality patient care, and improving staff morale and job satisfaction. This scholarly project offers a detailed plan for the development, implementation, and evaluation of the preceptor coordinator role, a department-level initiative that links hospital orientation to unit orientation; thus enhancing the overall orientation process.
