A Call To Revisit And Address The Histories Of Bullying In Nursing Education, Zachary Daly, Kathy O'Flynn-Magee, Patricia Rodney

Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière

The issue of bullying in nursing, and particularly in nursing education has been examined in numerous contexts, both in Canada and elsewhere. In this paper, we reflect on the ongoing prevalence of bullying in nursing’s history, its impacts, and question why it has continued to be problematic in nursing and in nursing education. We argue that part of the issue is a reluctance to come to terms with bullying’s historical origins in nursing. While we note that discussions of the issue of bullying in nursing start to appear in the 1970s, and more dedicated discussions of bullying in nursing education …

Staying Ahead Of The Digital Technological Curve Using Survey Methods, Upinder Sarker, Sandra J. Davidson, Olive Yonge, Christy Raymond, Heather Kanuka, Colleen Norris

Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière

In the early twentieth century, surveys were an innovative and neoteric methodology. Collected in-person or by mail, researchers could ascertain the thoughts and opinions of a small sample, which could then be applied to the general population. Almost one hundred years later, the use of surveys has become pervasive in society due to digital technological advancement. However, while the digital evolution has not only altered the possibilities of how, when, and where surveys may be administered, the threats to this methodology has also evolved. While issues related to previously known errors (i.e. sampling error, non-response error, etc.) remain and have …

Clinical Nurse Instructor Competencies: An Exploratory Study Of Role Requirements, Natalie A. Bownes, Michelle A. Freeman

Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière

Background: Baccalaureate nursing education consists of theoretical and practical training that prepares students for the role of competent nursing care providers. The practical application of knowledge and skills is vital in nursing curricula worldwide. Nursing programs have changed over the last few decades and have become increasingly dependent on part-time Clinical Instructors (CIs) to teach the clinical components of the curricula. However, CIs receive minimal instruction to prepare for this complex role. It has been acknowledged in Canada that there is limited research to inform CI specific competencies.

Purpose: The purpose of this research was to conduct an exploratory study …

Journal of Interprofessional Practice and Collaboration

Abstract

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) (2019) reported in 2018-2019, U.S. nursing schools turned away more than 75,000 qualified applicants from baccalaureate and graduate nursing programs due to insufficient numbers of faculty and clinical sites. Two-thirds of the nursing schools related a shortage of nursing faculty and/or clinical preceptors as a reason for not admitting qualified applicants (AACN, 2019).

There is a triad of challenges facing nursing today. The evolving triad is a nursing shortage, a lack of clinical facilities and nursing faculty. Nursing education must increase enrollment to fulfill the upcoming nursing shortage. Nursing schools are …

An Item Response Theory Analysis Of The Scoff Questionnaire In A Seventh Grade Population, Gerald J. Bean

International Journal of School Social Work

Eating disorders continue to be of concern to school social workers and health and counseling services staff in schools. There is a substantive need for scales that can help to measure both the extent to which eating disorders exist in a school population and to measure risk for specific students. Given that an eating disorder can be chronic and life-altering, early detection of risk is critically important. The aim of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of a popular eating order screening scale—the SCOFF Questionnaire—in a seventh-grade population using Item Response Theory methods. Epidemiological studies have suggested that …

Empowering Nurses Of Minority In The Face Of Incivility And Bullying: Through The Lens Of Phenomenology, Corrine Floyd 2020 University of Missouri-St. Louis

Empowering Nurses Of Minority In The Face Of Incivility And Bullying: Through The Lens Of Phenomenology, Corrine Floyd

Dissertations

Abstract

Up to 85% of nurses have reported exposure to incivility in the workplace (Hunt & Marini, 2012). The often-subtle nature of incivility toward nurses in a minority population may partially explain why it remains a problem. Healthcare organizations realize the need for civility to counter the high turnover rate, staff shortages, and low job satisfaction reported by nurses, but lack understanding of how nurses of a minority population perceive incivility and bullying. This study aimed to answer the research question how do nurses with minority representation experience incivility and bullying versus empowerment in the workplace? A descriptive phenomenological design …
