Delirium is a prevalent challenge among ICU patients, impacting approximately 30% of admissions (Brennan et al., 2023). If left untreated, delirium can increase use of restraints, hospital length of stay, intensive care unit length of stay, and ultimately, morbidity and mortality. This scoping review assesses the Confusion Assessment Method for the Intensive Care Unit (CAM-ICU) to gauge its efficacy in reducing the length of stay in the ICU for adult patients with delirium.

BACKGROUND: Depression in adults is a leading cause of disability, morbidity and mortality worldwide with an estimated prevalence of 20% in the US population. Despite estimates that one out of every five Americans suffers from depression, less than 50% of adult primary care patients with depression are identified, and less than 5% of all adult primary care patients are screened. Postoperative delirium impacts as many as 51% of surgical patients, resulting in increased mortality and morbidity, longer hospital stays, and increased healthcare costs. This scoping review examines the use of dexmedetomidine in the perioperative period in adults ≥ 65 years old to prevent and treat postoperative delirium.

Problem: The facility highly utilized sitters or care companions, negatively impacting the staffing plan, budget, and productivity. An average of 56 hours of care companions were used daily. This greatly exceeded the budget of 33 hours a day. Reassigning Patient Care Technicians (PCT) as care companions resulted in inadequate nurse support for patient care and increased cost for additional staffing needs.
