This study explores the feasibility of characterizing alkali-silica reaction (ASR) products and calcium silicate hydrates (C-S-H) from short-wave infrared (SWIR) spectroscopy. ASR products and C-S-H samples with different Ca/Si ratios were synthesized and analyzed through XRD, 29Si nuclei magnetic resonance (NMR) and SWIR spectroscopy. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was collected to help interpret the results from the SWIR spectroscopy. The obtained spectroscopic features were applied to quantify the ASR product abundance denoted by the length expansion of mortar bars after an accelerated ASR test. Stiffened cylindrical shell buckling strength mainly depends on the geometric and stiffness properties. A detailed parametric study was conducted to investigate the influence of these properties on the stiffened aluminium cylindrical shell buckling strength. Deep foundations, including piles, are employed in types of coastal soil because the soil in such regions may be subjected to several variables that alter the engineering features of the soil, like oil contamination. Together with the loads caused by supported superstructures, the pile foundations may also be susceptible to torsional loads from eccentric, horizontal loads brought on by winds, earthquakes, ship accidents, and waves. Transportation departments have made significant strides in addressing the challenges posed by the increasing weights of trucks on bridges. While there is a growing awareness of overheight vehicle collisions with bridges, implementing effective countermeasures remains limited. The susceptibility of bridges to damage from such collisions is on the rise, further exacerbated by unpredictable lateral impact forces. This study employs nonlinear impact analysis to assess the response of an unprotected vehicle-girder model, yielding realistic deformation outcomes comparable to observed impacts on the US-61 bridge. These extreme events have resulted in transverse offsets, overturning moments, and even dropping-off of superstructures due to their weak connection to substructures. This paper presents an improved theoretical damped single-axle vehicle-bridge dynamic interaction model to consider the effect of the contact patch size and motor-induced vehicle excitation. The contact patch issue is critical as it determines the minimum time step for simulation and maximum identifiable frequency, while the inclusion of the motor-induced vehicle excitation benefits the design of autonomous self-driven rather than towed vehicles. Decaffeination by microbial degradation is currently the most optimal and low-cost approach, involving only microbial cells and/or their enzymes. The bacterium was characterized using a series of biochemical tests. Positive results were obtained from carbohydrate fermentation, citrate utilization, and catalase tests, while negative results were obtained from Voges-Proskauer (VP) and indole tests. Three different caffeine concentrations of 0.25%, 0.4%, and 2% were tested and measured through Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrophotometry (GC-MS) analysis. The highest caffeine reduction (89.25%) was found when 0.25% caffeine was used in the media. Only a small amount of caffeine was reduced to 0.4% and 2%, with 34.78% …

This study investigates the optimization of building envelopes and roof shading systems of existing buildings in Indonesia to realize notable energy savings. Multiple scenarios were explored, with modifications to building envelopes and roof shading, highlighting the overall thermal transfer value as a key parameter. This study determines how curing temperatures, aging condition, and hydrated lime contents affect the unconfined compressive strength (UCS), modulus of elasticity, and workability of low-alkaline concrete. Samples were prepared in two different groups to determine the optimum hydrated lime content and aging conditions to assess the mutual effect of NaOH molarity and curing temperature, that is, 70 °C for 48 h or room temperature, on samples with and without lime. The time-dependent rheological and early-age strength parameters of Polymer concrete (PC) were investigated. PC flow decreased, and the static yield stress and thixotropy increased as the specimen aged, while the dynamic yield stress remained unchanged. The study found that the Herschel-Bulkley model can accurately describe the PC’s rheological behavior over time. The change in cohesion strength and internal friction angle over time was observed using uniaxial unconfined compression and direct shear tests of fresh PC. Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC) and High Performance concrete (HPC) is characterized by high compressive strength and high toughness. This is achieved through maximizing the particle packing density in the matrix and the use of fibers to reinforce the matrix, increasing the materials toughness. The interactions of fibers and the matrix during loading is quite complex and involves several different energy dissipation mechanisms. When an errant vehicle strikes a bridge railing on a typical girder bridge, impact loads are transmitted downward through the railing and inward through the deck overhang to the primary superstructure elements. In this research effort, design demands for deck overhangs supporting concrete railings were characterized using physical testing and complementary modeling in LS-DYNA. Physical test and modeling results were also used to better characterize the ultimate strength of overhangs supporting post-and-beam railings. Ultimately, a novel design methodology for deck overhangs was developed and proposed for adoption to the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications (BDS).

Currently ARDOT engineers use a Standard Penetration Test (SPT) based liquefaction spreadsheet developed 10 years ago to evaluate liquefaction triggering. Since this spreadsheet was developed, updates to the liquefaction triggering procedures have been published making the spreadsheet out-of-date. The goal of this research was to develop and field validate retrofit solutions to improve the energy efficiency of buildings. Exterior cladding panels were designed and tested to ensure adequate thermal and structural performance.
