Importance Of School Library Programs, Cynthia Strong

Cynthia Strong

Within the discipline of library science, over 20 research studies have been done in the United States attesting to how quality school library programs contribute to improved academic achievement. On the other hand, in the fields of education, school counseling, administration, and school leadership, and so on, there is a dearth of scholarship and recognition of the positive impact librarians and library media program have on student success. This conceptual paper first presents an overview of the empirical research on school library programs and the positive impact they have on the academic achievement of students in the United States. Return On Investment: New Strategies For Marketing Digital Resources To Academic Faculty, Elyse L. Profera, Michael A. Arthur, Barbara Tierney

Barbara Tierney

Game-changing strategies for marketing digital resources to end-users are crucial for establishing return on investment in this period of reduced library collection budgets and challenging resource prices.  When expensive digital resources are purchased by academic libraries, there needs to be a marketing plan in place for getting these resources into the hands of end-users as quickly as possible.

One strategy for success is a marketing collaboration between the publisher and the academic library.  This panel program will focus on the success achieved at the University of Central Florida Libraries where such a collaboration included experts from Taylor & Francis working …

Successful Scholarly Communication At A Small University: Integration Of Education, Services, And An Institutional Repository At Valparaiso University, Jonathan Bull, Bradford Lee Eden

Jonathan Bull

Beginning in 2011, the Christopher Center Library Services (CCLS) unit at Valparaiso University (VU) started implementing new scholarly communication services utilizing two different components: 1. the education and training of library staff in scholarly communication trends and issues; and 2. the implementation of ValpoScholar, VU’s institutional repository (IR) and its associated services. These components allowed for new skills to be developed, new services to be delivered and the library’s digital collections to grow with minimal impact to existing services. This model may provide a framework for other small institutions interested in adding scholarly communication services to their existing library services.

Starting From Scratch: Meaningful Integration Of Information Literacy Through Collaborative Course And Assignment Design, Chris Sweet, Meghan Burke Dec 2013

Starting From Scratch: Meaningful Integration Of Information Literacy Through Collaborative Course And Assignment Design, Chris Sweet, Meghan Burke

Meghan A. Burke

Instruction librarians are all too familiar with well-intentioned research papers and assignments that reduce information literacy to a simplistic checklist (must include 4 peer-reviewed sources) or set of skills (use interlibrary loan, cite materials properly). Librarians and classroom faculty should recognize that information literacy cannot just be magically imparted to students through a single assignment or library instruction session. Becoming information literate requires repeated practice in a variety of contexts. How often have you wished for the opportunity to just sit down with a faculty member and start from scratch when designing an assignment –or even better- an entire course? …

“Pure Delight And Professional Development”: The Reading Practices And Library Use Of An Active Poetry Community, Carey Toane, Paulette Rothbauer

Paulette Rothbauer

Abstract:
This paper reports the findings of an online survey designed to explore the reading practices, library habits, and book acquisition of adult members of an active poetry community (n = 32) in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Findings show the close relationship between poetry reading and poetry writing and the tight interweaving of poetry throughout the working and personal lives of respondents. Reading and finding out about poetry are also highly social in nature with a clear reliance on the poetry community rather than the public library. Our findings have implications for the roles of reading institutions such as bookstores, …
