Data Management For Research Grants: A Marquette Pilot Project, Rose Fortier, Lynn K. Whittenberger
Data Management For Research Grants: A Marquette Pilot Project, Rose Fortier, Lynn K. Whittenberger
Rose Fortier
Presenters will report on an ongoing pilot project to manage data generated by National Science Foundation grants using bepress’ Digital Commons institutional repository software. The challenge of creating a home for data on a repository created for publications was met through the creation of a series that brings together all grant output, i.e. raw and aggregated data, publications, presentations, and other research output. Further challenges in obtaining and managing varying formats of raw data (numerical, image, video, sound), and large volumes of data will be discussed. Metadata for series with such diverse formats presents its own difficulties, especially when a …

Managing E-Publishing: Perfect Harmony For Serialists, Wendy C. Robertson, Charlene N. Simser
Wendy C Robertson
This article describes two serialists who use skills honed in their respective serials departments to show how those skills adapt to the world of e-publishing. The presenters discussed their roles in e-publishing and their respective university presses and library publishing programs. How have their libraries reorganized to provide resources for supporting these new roles? The daily work of an e-publishing librarian was reviewed, including an overview of working with Digital Commons and Open Journal Systems, two e-press platforms. The presenters also discussed funding and sustainability of the programs, and working with open access and subscription titles.

Bridging The Gap Between Digital Measures And Digital Commons In Support Of Open Access: Or, How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love Human Mediation, Andrew Wesolek
Publications
Utah State University is home to a Digital Commons repository and an instance of the Digital Measures activity-reporting tool. The prospect of linking these two systems, such that content is automatically harvested from Digital Measures for upload into the Digital Commons is alluring. Our initial efforts were abandoned due to lack of faculty permissions and low-quality metadata. However, with the passage of an Institutional Open Access Policy, we resumed investigation. We found that the process of harvesting from Digital Measures and uploading to Digital Commons could be streamlined, if not fully automated. Our initial harvest revealed that human-mediation is desirable.

The Choice Is Yours! Researchers Assign Subject Metadata To Their Own Materials In Institutional Repositories, Maira Bundza
University Libraries Faculty & Staff Publications
The Digital Commons platform for institutional repositories provides a three-tiered taxonomy of academic disciplines for each item submitted to the repository. Since faculty and departmental administrators across campuses are encouraged to submit materials to the institutional repository themselves, they must also assign disciplines or subject categories for their own work. The expandable drop-down menu of about 1,000 categories is easy to use, and facilitates the growth of the institutional repository and access to the materials through the Internet.
