A Metadata Application Profile For Orcid, Dong Joon Lee, Michael Witt, Richard Urban, Beth Plale

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID) is an open, nonprofit, and community-driven effort to prevent name confusion in research and scholarly communities. ORCID Registry (developed by ORCID) distinguishes researchers and contributors by assigning unique researcher identifiers and linking research activities and outputs, including scholarly works, affiliations, and funding, to these identifiers. Since the registry service launched in October 2012, the number of ORCID identifiers has rapidly increased, and the registry has been continuously improved through the active use of ORCID API. This study aims to fill the gap between practical uses in and conceptual understandings of ORCID Registry. Since the …

Mets For The Cultural Heritage Community: A Literature Review, Sharon Cheslow Aug 2014

Mets For The Cultural Heritage Community: A Literature Review, Sharon Cheslow

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

METS (Metadata Encoding and Transmission Standard) is an XML-based, data communication standard used for digital collections in cultural heritage institutions, including libraries, archives, and museums, and maintained by the Library of Congress. Recent articles have been written for those in the cultural heritage community who may find METS beneficial. Even so, the uses of METS are still being discovered in terms of best practices and interoperability. One of the main issues with METS is how it can be used with external schemas such as MODS, PREMIS, or Dublin Core. This paper includes a brief description of METS as a wrapper …

It discusses the issues in DublinCore (DC) to MODS transformation, explores the possible options, the approach adopted and the tool used for MODS metadata editing.

As part of the state-wide Islandora implementation, UCF has been migrating its collections in DigiTool to MODS records for Islandora to ingest. In migrating from a less granular metadata schema to a more granular one, many issues are involved such as data ambiguity, overly generic data representation, the markup inadequacy in describing …

Lightning Round: Moving Those Marcs: Workflows For Loading Library Catalog Holdings To A Discovery Layer, Gloria Slaughter, Brianne N. Hagen

Faculty Presentations

After adding the discovery layer 1Search at Hope College, we had to quickly adapt our cataloging workflows to reflect our library's holdings within this product. Quarterly loads of the institution's full catalog holdings are sent in MARC record format, as well as daily updates and deletes to keep the records in 1Search current. This poster aims to present workflows for sending discovery layer updates and deletes, as well as considerations for technical services departments when deciding on discovery layer services. Academic libraries which currently have a discovery layer or are considering one will find this poster most helpful.

A Child-Driven Metadata Schema: A Holistic Analysis Of Children's Cognitive Processes During Book Selection, Jihee Beak May 2014

A Child-Driven Metadata Schema: A Holistic Analysis Of Children's Cognitive Processes During Book Selection, Jihee Beak

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to construct a child-driven metadata schema by understanding children's cognitive processes and behaviors during book selection. Existing knowledge organization systems including metadata schemas and previous literature in the metadata domain have shown that there is a no specialized metadata schema that describes children's resources that also is developed by children. It is clear that children require a new or alternative child-driven metadata schema. Child-driven metadata elements reflected the children's cognitive perceptions that could allow children to intuitively and easily find books in an online cataloging system. The literature of development of literacy skills claims …

Understanding Ultimate Use Data And Its Implication For Digital Library Management: A Case Study, Michele Reilly, Santi Thompson May 2014

Understanding Ultimate Use Data And Its Implication For Digital Library Management: A Case Study, Michele Reilly, Santi Thompson

Library Scholarship

Information professionals and librarians have been studying, discussing, and developing digital libraries for over two decades, but understanding ultimate use of images from digital libraries remains a mystery for many of them. Most articles written on digital library use focus on users’ search retrieval needs and behavior. Few mention how digital library patrons use the images they request. Like many digital libraries, archives, and special collections, the University of Houston Digital Library makes high resolution images available to their patrons. Image delivery is achieved by an automated system, titled the Digital Cart Service. An unexpected benefit of the Digital Cart …

Mining The Blob: There’S Gold In The Directory!, Kathryn Lybarger

Library Presentations

When running reports from Voyager, we usually focus on the fields deemed important enough to index, and avoid the blob version of the MARC records whenever possible. For some questions, however, the blob is not just the only way to the answer, but a surprisingly fast way as well. Though MARC is mainly used as a method to communicate bibliographic data, the format itself contains an index that can be used to quickly determine the broad shape of a record's content. In this talk, I will describe several projects in which I have specifically taken advantage of MARC's directory format …

The Conversion Of Marc Metadata For Online Visual Resource Collections: A Case Study Of Tactics, Challenges And Results, Brighid Mooney Gonzales

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

With a great deal of legacy metadata currently existing in the increasingly outdated MARC format, many institutions are searching for efficient ways to convert this data into formats that are more current, extensible and suitable for the description of digital and non-print materials. In this study, a group of digitized photographs from a Library of Congress collection with MARC records available is converted into a set of Dublin Core records to document the process involved in such a conversion. Successful tactics used, challenges encountered and the overall results of the conversion process are detailed.
