Various studies suggest that there has been a decline in usage of traditional face-to-face reference services. The overall aim of the study was to investigate the impact of the implementation of the library automation project on library staff in terms of how it affects their job satisfaction. This study seeks to clarify research trends related to marketing in the field of information disciplines from Latin American scientific production. As a reference source, we used the electronic journals indexed in the Latindex Directory. Some bibliometric indicators were applied to 108 documents; these indicators were as follows: productivity by year, journals, authors, language, and finally term cooccurrence analysis. It was evident that the highest rate of productivity was found in Brazilian journals and authors, and in the Portuguese language. An increasing number of research funders require free public access to the outcomes of funded research. To comply with the requirement, some researchers choose to publish their findings in open access journals. Given that there are so many choices, what should researchers consider when choosing an open access journal to publish? To celebrate Open Access Week (October 20-26, 2014), the University of Kentucky Libraries hosted a workshop that aimed to help you answer the above question. Objective: perform a bibliometric characterization of Cuban research on information literacy (INFOLIT) based on the literature published from 2000 to 2013. Methods: substantiation was provided for conceptual notions about INFOLIT in the field of library and information sciences, and some interesting research antecedents were explored. Sixty-seven papers identified by the Ibero-America-Cuba INFOLIT Wiki-Repository were examined with the bibliometric indicators yearly productivity, authors, journals and term co-occurrence analysis, as well as type of documents cited, and most commonly cited journals and authors. In the fall of 2013, librarians at Cornell University and Syracuse University surveyed STEM faculty about open access author fees. While few authors had decided against publishing in an open access journal due to the author fee requirement, results showed skepticism towards the quality of open access titles, opposition to paying fees from their own funds, and a lack of understanding of how university resources such as library subscriptions are funded. The speaker will take the participants through the case study results and discuss opportunities for librarians and publishers to collaborate on increasing awareness and participation in open access.

DePaul University Library will share its lessons learned and recommendations for hosted CONTENTdm 6 administrators wishing to customize CONTENTdm in a way that strikes the right balance between default CONTENTdm sites and sites that stand out and better serve our unique audiences. The DePaul University Library has learned many lessons from customizing its hosted instance of CONTENTdm 6, including the use of jQuery to add interface enhancements and remove some native CONTENTdm features. Unfortunately, this did not prove a long-term solution due to some limitations of CONTENTdm’s built-in customization tools, leading to content management issues and bugs that were hard …

DePaul University has recently changed its strategy for growing its institutional repository, promoting opportunities for publishing student scholarship. Unlike with faculty works, student scholarship does not evoke strong opinions about copyright and future publishing risks. Instead, it is seen both as a promotional tool for a department or faculty member and as a win for students. Our successes have included student translations of historical French documents held in our library, a student Law journal, a student Nursing journal, student GIS maps and oral histories of artists. Teaching Information Evaluation With The 5 Ws: An Elementary Method, An Instructional Scaffold, And The Effect On Student Recall And Application, Rachel Radom, Rachel W. Gammons

Researchers developed an information evaluation activity used in one-shot library instruction for English composition classes. The activity guided students through evaluation using the “Five Ws” method of inquiry (who, what, when, etc.). A summative assessment determined student recall and application of the method. Findings, consistent over two semesters, include that 66.0 percent of students applied or recalled at least one of the Five Ws, and 20.8 percent of students applied or recalled more than one of its six criteria. Instructors were also surveyed, with 100 percent finding value in the method and 83.3 percent using or planning to use it …

To support the University of Kentucky’s (UK) strategic plan, UK Libraries created a Director of International Programs (DIP) position in 2010 to plan and manage its international initiatives. In consultation of the UK administration, the DIP identified areas in which the library could make major contributions toward internationalization. The DIP has made significant progress in the areas by participating in the College of Arts and Sciences’ Passport to the World Program. Assessment has become an important component of any discussion on planning or implementing new library services as well as evaluating existing ones. Yet it is often difficult to know how to proceed with assessment, what tools to use, and how to implement the results of assessment. This session presented a practical example of assessing a new a Science and Technology library service with emphasis placed on how assessment was incorporated into planning process, what tools were used, and what the practical outcomes of that assessment were.

The LibGuides Subcommittee conducted a qualitative user study of the DePaul University Library’s Research Guides during the Fall 2013 quarter. This exempt study received approval from the Institutional Review Board and included 15 participants from different age ranges and student roles within the university. This user study investigated how users actually perceive, navigate through, and use these guides. The results of the user study will help us determine better ways to meet student needs through further development of the research guides.
