Xquery For Archivists: Understanding Ead Finding Aids As Data, Gregory Wiedeman Nov 2014

Xquery For Archivists: Understanding Ead Finding Aids As Data, Gregory Wiedeman

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

XML has long been an important tool for archivists. The addition of XQuery provides a simple and easy-to-learn tool to extract, transform, and manipulate the large amounts of XML data that archival repositories have committed resources to develop and maintain – particularly EAD finding aids. XQuery allows archivists to make use of that data. Furthermore, using XQuery to query EAD finding aids, rather than merely reformat them with XSLT, forces archivists to look at finding aids as data. This will provide better knowledge of how EAD may be used and further understanding of how finding aids may be better encoded. …

Using Summon To Teach Historical Primary Sources: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly, Carol A. Singer, Stephen M. Charter Nov 2014

Using Summon To Teach Historical Primary Sources: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly, Carol A. Singer, Stephen M. Charter

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2012

The use of a discovery layer transforms the process of identifying and accessing library resources, including archival, published, and virtual historical primary sources. The content of a discovery layer database is not identical with the sum of the online catalog plus the various databases to which the library subscribes. Some kinds of historical primary sources, or their finding aids, may not be included. Even when virtual resources are included in the discovery layer database, reliable access to full text may not be easily available. However, some virtual resources which were not previously accessible through library databases may now be easily …

Doc To Pdf And Html, Eric Willey

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

This article illustrates how archival finding aids or other documents in any common word processing file format can be mass converted to web friendly PDF and HTML formats with free software so they can be made available on the web. Files are initially uploaded to Google Drive, then converted and downloaded in either PDF or HTML format. For HTML files code is then edited in Notepad++ if necessary. The intended audience for this article is smaller institutions with fewer technological resources to devote to creating full EAD finding aids or exporting information to a database, but who nevertheless would like …

Everything You Need To Know About Grants: Beginning, Middle And End, Katie Richardson, Melissa Nykanen, Gregory L. Williams, Holly Rose Larson Mcgee, Jamie Henricks

Pepperdine University Libraries

“Everything You Need to Know about Grants: Beginning, Middle and End” was a 90-minute session presented at the Society of California Archivists Annual General Meeting in Berkeley, CA, on April 13, 2013. As a part of the archival community, many of us know that grants are an excellent way to reduce backlogs or accomplish projects we don't have the resources to tackle. However, what many of us may not know is how much work goes into successfully implementing and completing a grant. The purpose of this session was to assemble a group of individuals who have been involved in various …

Spanning Boundaries To Identify Archival Literacy Competencies, Sharon A. Weiner, Sammie L. Morris, Lawrence J. Mykytiuk Oct 2014

Spanning Boundaries To Identify Archival Literacy Competencies, Sharon A. Weiner, Sammie L. Morris, Lawrence J. Mykytiuk

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

This paper is a report of a collaborative research project that identified the competencies undergraduate history majors should have related to finding and using archival materials. The boundary-spanning collaboration involved archivists, librarians, and history faculty.

Historians have long relied upon archives as essential source material, and recent studies confirmed the continued significance of archives to research in this field. However, there is no detailed listing of the archival research competencies that college history students should attain. Without a clearly defined list upon which history faculty, archivists, and library liaisons to history departments agree, teaching about archives research is difficult and …

#Mplp: A Comparison Of Domain Novice And Expert User-Generated Tags In A Minimally Processed Digital Archive, Edward A. Benoit Iii

Theses and Dissertations

The high costs of creating and maintaining digital archives precluded many archives from providing users with digital content or increasing the amount of digitized materials. Studies have shown users increasingly demand immediate online access to archival materials with detailed descriptions (access points). The adoption of minimal processing to digital archives limits the access points at the folder or series level rather than the item-level description users' desire. User-generated content such as tags, could supplement the minimally processed metadata, though users are reluctant to trust or use unmediated tags. This dissertation project explores the potential for controlling/mediating the supplemental metadata from …

Seeking An Identity: The Portrayal Of Archivists In Film, Anne Daniel, Amanda Oliver Jun 2014

Seeking An Identity: The Portrayal Of Archivists In Film, Anne Daniel, Amanda Oliver

Anne Daniel

The image of archivists in media can sometimes seem nebulous. From descriptions of dusty, unorganized vaults and cardigan-clad gatekeepers, there appears to be many stereotypes perpetuated in media. Building upon previous research in this area, this study aims to investigate how archivists are portrayed in film. Films involving archives and archivists were selected and a content analysis of these films was conducted to address the following questions: is there an archivist in the film and how is the character portrayed? Can specific stereotypes be identified? Do archivists have their own distinct identities in films or is the archivist a non-descript …

Imagination At Work: Reaching New Users With Innovative Instruction And Outreach, Erin Passehl-Stoddart

Erin Passehl Stoddart

In a college or university setting, archivists are often charged with developing innovative ways to inspire campus users to think expansively and creatively about primary sources. Individual presentations will address developing a fictional collection that can be mobilized and expanded to fulfill learning objectives across multiple disciplines; adapting an interactive game from NYPL to promote and generate interest in archives during New Student Week; and collaborating with faculty and French majors on a grant-funded project to build and promote collections. Other presentations will extend the conversation to assessment and will consider integrating primary source literacy in first-year library instruction classes …

Privacy, Restriction, And Access: Legal And Ethical Dilemmas, Camila Z. Tessler May 2014

Privacy, Restriction, And Access: Legal And Ethical Dilemmas, Camila Z. Tessler

School of Information Student Research Journal

This paper examines the intersection of privacy and access in archival repositories. Archival repositories are well known for containing restricted material, and for protecting the privacy of the donors. This literature review examines the need for restricted material from both legal and ethical standpoints, as well as discussing culturally sensitive materials while determining what archives and libraries can do to protect both themselves and their donors while enhancing accessibility and freedom of information.

Digitization And Digital Preservation: A Review Of The Literature, Stephanie Routhier Perry May 2014

Digitization And Digital Preservation: A Review Of The Literature, Stephanie Routhier Perry

School of Information Student Research Journal

Digitization and digital preservation are rapidly becoming the standard forms of preservation for libraries, archives, and other cultural heritage institutions, yet there is still much confusion as to what they mean and how they are meant to be used. Through a review of the recent literature, this paper aims to define both concepts, as well as find some of the common challenges associated with these preservation processes. Different preservation methods, collaboration techniques, and metadata schema are also discussed.

Institutional Repository And Archival Collaborations At Unlv Libraries: Who's In, Who's Out?, Tom D. Sommer

Library Faculty Presentations

The University Archives has become an integral part of an academic institution. It has met its role as the repository for the rich history of an institution. They have met the challenges of a changing environment at many points in their history. The most recent change being the addition of born-digital materials into their collections. However, there is an opportunity to collaborate with another unit within academic libraries. The introduction and growth of institutional repositories (IR) on college campuses has provided an opportunity for university archives. An IR’s goal is to preserve the intellectual output of an institution. This is …

Little Else Than A Memory: Purdue Students Search For The Class Of 1904, Kristina Bross

Scholarly Publishing Services e-Books

Through their individual studies, the authors of the biographies inside this book were led in interesting and very different directions. From a double-name conundrum to intimate connections with their subjects’ kin, their archival research was rife with unexpected twists and turns. Although many differences between modern-day university culture and the campus of 1904 emerge, the similarities were far more profound. Surprising diversity existed even at the dawn of the twentieth century. Students intimately tracked the lives of African Americans, women, farm kids, immigrants, international students, and inner-city teens, all with one thing in common—a Purdue education. This study of Purdue …
