Librarians have collected database usage statistics for as long as they have been available. But other than using them to decide whether or not to renew a database subscription, what can we use them for? The session will begin with a brief overview of COUNTER compliance and what kinds of reports are available from vendors before discussing how to mix, blend, and splice your usage numbers to get the most out of your statistics. The session will include group activities to give you some hands-on experience.

University Libraries: Faculty Scholarship

Generating, collecting, and analyzing building usage statistics can greatly increase the ability of an access services unit to meet the changing dynamic of patron needs in an academic library. By analyzing three different data points, the Access Services Unit in Malpass Library at Western Illinois University was able to determine the most effective and efficient way to deploy the student workforce to meet the demonstrated needs of the patron population throughout the day. This article will examine those data points and how they were analyzed in order to improve the services provided by the Access Services Unit.

Academic libraries are increasingly required to prove their value as university management is demanding evidence of return on investment. The Information Literacy (IL) programme at Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) Libraries has undergone a process of development over many years from the initial random training sessions to the development and approval of a certified short course.

With these developments came the need for more relevant and detailed statistics. In a parallel process, the recording of the statistics for IL and other training done by library staff have therefore also evolved over the past few years.
