Rediscovering Academic Libraries For Degree-Seeking Older Students, Marilia Antunez, Mary Aagard

Increasingly higher numbers of older adults are returning to college campuses to earn degrees. Despite the recent economic recession and cuts to some state tuition waiver programs for older adults, many older students continue to pursue academic degrees on college campuses. Overwhelmingly, the literature that focuses on lifelong learning by older students has not incorporated degree-seeking students in their studies. This exploratory study is also driven by the role of libraries in serving this diverse student population. While the growing non-traditional student population brings many benefits to the life of college campuses, many of these students also face challenges in …

Loyola Marymount University (LMU) designed a 4-module online tutorial to meet the information literacy outcomes associated with a First Year Seminar course. The four modules that comprise the tutorial (Starting Your Assignment, Types of Information, Finding and Evaluating Information, and Using Information Ethically) were integrated into each First Year Seminar course through Blackboard, the university's Learning Management System (LMS). After completing each tutorial module, students were also required to take a quiz. The effectiveness of the tutorial and quizzes was assessed through a mixed methods approach using direct and indirect measures. Overall areas of weakness are were evaluated and addressed, …

Loyola Marymount University’s (LMU) Reference Department launched a “curriculum mapping project” to support information literacy in a new core curriculum. Subject librarians at LMU are completing a curriculum map for every undergraduate major degree program on campus. The purpose is to pinpoint strategic information literacy opportunities within each Department, discipline, or program.

Since 2008 EIU has been digitizing ETDs and making them available via the library catalog, I-Share (the state of IL consortia catalog), and WorldCat. It was only after ETDs were included in the institutional repository (The Keep) that the majority of faculty became fully aware of how accessible these theses had become. This dawning realization led to important conversations with faculty and other stakeholders about concerns regarding publishing, grant approval, and patents. Following these discussions new embargo policies and workflows were developed. In this presentation, we will provide statistics showing increased access to ETDs due to the repository, and describe …

In a college or university setting, archivists are often charged with developing innovative ways to inspire campus users to think expansively and creatively about primary sources. Individual presentations will address developing a fictional collection that can be mobilized and expanded to fulfill learning objectives across multiple disciplines; adapting an interactive game from NYPL to promote and generate interest in archives during New Student Week; and collaborating with faculty and French majors on a grant-funded project to build and promote collections. Since its creation in 2004, GIL Express has attempted to supplement traditional ILL services by providing a faster avenue for patrons to request and receive books. However, operating similar services from two different departments can lead to confusion for patrons and headaches for staff. For this project, we will analyze the methods employed by other schools in the USG system to improve the coordination of GIL Express and ILL services. We will present our findings as well as evaluate alternative solutions to streamline the process for both patrons and staff.

Increasingly, legal requirements such as the Illinois Open Access law (Public Act 098-0925) mandate open access to state funded research, and funding agencies are obliging researchers to preserve data in accessible platforms. In addition, publisher-driven “gold OA” and free-access “green OA” require researchers to navigate complicated options for copyright control. Meanwhile, new OA “scholars networks” offer possibilities for collaboration of which scholars may be unaware.
