The Difficulty With Alternatives, Brian Martin
The Difficulty With Alternatives, Brian Martin
Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)
Criticising the existing system seems pretty easy. Lots of people do it. Why is it so difficult, in comparison, to promote alternatives? Whether the topic is the military, the nuclear family, the market or the prison system, there is little attention to alternatives compared to criticism of the current system. For example, Noam Chomsky and Edward Herman (1979) in their classic book The Political Economy of Human Rights document US government sponsorship of repressive regimes. But they don’t discuss how to promote change in these policies. In his book The Credential Society, Randall Collins (1979) offers a devastating critique of …
Nonviolence Versus Terrorism, Brian Martin
Nonviolence Versus Terrorism, Brian Martin
Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)
The terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 were an enormous setback for the cause of nonviolence. They provided a stimulus and ostensible justification for a spiral of violence in which nonviolent alternatives are marginalised. Nonviolence offers numerous ways to oppose and prevent terrorism, but such responses are totally at odds with the way government leaders conceive the world.
Remembrance Of Things That Last, Anthony Ashbolt
Remembrance Of Things That Last, Anthony Ashbolt

For some years now, the 1960s have been contested terrain. Many commentators have rushed to specious judgements about the radical politics of the era, while others have struggled valiantly to keep memories alive. Much of the politics of the contemporary epoch is being played out through the lens of the Sixties. This seems like a grand and foolish claim but it needs to be understood that the so-called neo-liberal and/or neoconservative agenda (and I will include hawkish foreign policy in this) is substantially directed at burying the Sixties. The gains of the various social movements, in particular the anti-war and …

For nine days in November 2001 (9th-17th), the 6th Pusan International Film Festival (PIFF) rocked the seaside city of Pusan. A record 659 industry guests from 30 countries, 3100 official Korean guests, and more than a hundred thousand moviegoers filled the seats of 332 completely sold-out, or near sell-out screenings in 15 different theatres. Thousands and thousands of curious festival fans filled the small streets and alleyways in the Downtown-Nampodong festival area, enjoying the stars, lights, cameras, and all of the promotional PIFF booths and kiosks. A total of 126,613 paid tickets were sold to 201 films from 60 countries, …

Shortly after the release of his new film Bad Guy (Korea 2001), KIM Ki-Duk announced that he was not giving any more interviews. He took a vow of silence, because many of his critics had been criticizing him. I decided to ask him for an interview anyway. He accepted my invitation right away. I reviewed his website (www.kimkiduk.com), which includes my harsh criticism about his films, and I read his past interviews. There were 21 interviews and 37 reviews about his new film Bad Guy. I printed 184 articles written by his fans and harsh opponents and read them randomly.
Book Review Of: Sound Technology And The American Cinema, Brian M. Yecies
Book Review Of: Sound Technology And The American Cinema, Brian M. Yecies
Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)
Sound technology and the American cinema makes an exciting contribution to the fields of film history, film theory, and cultural studies. It offers an in-depth, multi-sourced study of the development of representational technologies, including photography, phonography, and the cinema; each had a convergent role in the permanent adoption of sound into the Hollywood film industry. James Lastra intrigues the reader by constructing a technological genealogy, which connects the ideas and sensibilities of an American culture on the brink of modernity. In doing so, he brings to life a material history of this century's "most influential audiovisual form-the classical Hollywood sound …
Collaboration And Resistance In Indigenous Life Writing, Michael Jacklin
Collaboration And Resistance In Indigenous Life Writing, Michael Jacklin
Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)
Collaboration is marked by indeterminacy. It is, by nature, intermediary, interposing, intervening. In Australia, collaboration between Aboriginal and invader/settler subjects in the unfolding of colonial engagement is a topic that has received limited scholarly attention. Some studies have dealt with native police and Black trackers; others have examined local negotiations of power and discourse; but the only broad survey of collaboration is Henry Reynolds's With the White People (1990). In this work Reynolds traces the varied modes of collaboration existing between the Aborigines and the European colonists of Australia from first contact and early settlement through ro the First World …

Whilst attempting to write a paper about relationships to place, Margaret Somerville suffered from what she calls 'a crisis of the body.'. She was in the early stages of a collaborative writing project with four Aboriginal women in which she was recording their oral histories of their connection to place. She says of the proiect: The women gave me multiple selves, the different I's I want in the text: the pencil as opposed to the mouth, archaeologist, historian, oral historian, and so on, but the new question was how to write a bodily presence?
Why Don't We Teach Software Engineers About The Law?, Anne Fuller, Peter Croll
Why Don't We Teach Software Engineers About The Law?, Anne Fuller, Peter Croll
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
Much work has been done in recent years developing software engineering curricula. SE research has traditionally focused on the needs of very large corporations undertaking equally mammoth and complex development projects, consequently, current curricula tend to focus on this model. Yet by far the majority of software development is undertaken by Small to Medium Enterprises. The rise of the internet as a platform for commercial applications has partly driven this move away from monolithic software development. Depending on the nature of the application itself many of these products can be described as 'critical' with the failure of such a product …
A Classification Of Intersection Type Systems, Martin W. Bunder
A Classification Of Intersection Type Systems, Martin W. Bunder
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
The first system of intersection types. Coppo and Dezani [3], extended simple types to include intersections and added intersection introduction and elimination rules ((ΛI ) and (ΛE) ) to the type assignment system. The major advantage of these new types was that they were invariant under β-equality, later work by Barendregt, Coppo and Dezani [1], extended this to include an (η) rule which gave types invariant under βη-reduction.
Urzyczyn proved in [6] that for both these systems it is undecidable whether a given intersection type is empty. Kurata and Takahashi however have shown in [5] …

Can We Teach Problem Solving In A Clinical Nursing Laboratory?, E Ashcroft
Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A
Can we teach problem solving in a clinical nursing laboratory? Elfi Ashcroft Technical Officer & Nursing Laboratory Manager University of Wollongong Abstract: The objectives of clinical nursing laboratories are the acquisition of psychomotor skills and the simulation of realistic clinical situations (Reilly and Oerman, 1992). A successful educational experience should also encourage the student to identify their development needs and initiate their own learning response (Neary, 2000). Laboratory classes are congested with factual information and demonstration (show and tell). Students, however, rarely have enough time to explore equipment and to acquire technical problem solving skills. The idea to develop a …

Dietary N-3 And N-6 Fatty Acids Alter Avian Metabolism: Metabolism And Abdominal Fat Deposition, Ronald Newman, Wayne Bryden, Eva Fleck, John R. Ashes, William A. Buttemer, Leonard Storlien, Jeffery Downing
Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A
The effects of dietary saturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) of the n-3 and n-6 series on weight gain, body composition and substrate oxidation were investigated in broiler chickens. At 3 weeks of age three groups of chickens (n 30; ten birds per group) were fed the fat-enriched experimental diets for 5 weeks. These diets were isonitrogenous, isoenergetic and contained 208 g protein/kg and 80 g edible tallow, fish oil or sunflower oil/kg; the dietary fatty acid profiles were thus dominated by saturated fatty acids, n-3 PUFA or n-6 PUFA respectively. Resting RQ …

Ground-based measurements of O3 and NO2 columns at Kiruna (68°N) and Arrival Heights (78°S) were used to validate stratospheric profile measurements of the same species by the satellite-based Improved Limb Atmospheric Spectrometer (ILAS) flown between November 1996 and June 1997. In addition, measurements of HNO3, CH4, and N2O made at Arrival Heights are compared with measurements of these species by ILAS. Even though there were no temporal coincidences in the latter comparison, the ground-based data provide a climatological context for the ILAS measurements. ILAS profiles measured within 10° of longitude and 2° …

Purpose: To determine how deamidation and partial loss of the N- and C-terminal extensions alter the heat stability of βB1-crystallin.
Methods: Human lens βB1, a deamidated βB1, Q204E, and αA-crystallins were expressed. Truncated βB1 was generated by proteolytic removal of part of its terminal extensions. The aggregation and precipitation of these proteins due to heating was monitored by circular dichroism and light scattering. The effect of heat on the stability of both monomers and oligomers was investigated. The flexibility of the extensions in wild type and deamidated βB1 was assessed by 1H NMR spectroscopy.
Results: With heat, deamidated βB1 …

A Distribution-Based Face/Nonface Classification Technique, Son Lam Phung, Douglas Chai, Abdesselam Bouzerdoum
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
The core element of many existing approaches to face detection is the classification algorithm that determines if a sub-image of an input image contains a face pattern. In this paper, we present a novel and effective distribution-based face/non-face classification technique that detects frontal face patterns with possible in-plane rotation. A 15x15 input sub-image is first processed by a color filter, which verifies the presence of human skin color in the sub-image. Then, the intensity image is extracted from the identified skin color sub-image and converted into a vector in a high-dimensional space (R225). Principal component analysis is …
Limitations Of Current Design Procedures For Steel Members In Space Frames, Lip H. Teh
Limitations Of Current Design Procedures For Steel Members In Space Frames, Lip H. Teh
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
The use of more advanced methods of analysis to design steel frames may lead to substantial material savings, in addition to simplicity in the design procedures. However, these benefits do not yet appear to be a powerful incentive for many structural engineers to abandon the familiar linear elastic analysis (LEA) based design procedures, even when dealing with steel structures that are not regular rectangular frames. This paper uses a heuristic example to demonstrate the serious limitations of the LEA based design procedures, whether alignment charts or system buckling analysis is used to determine the effective lengths of the compression members. …
A Sub-Vector Weighting Scheme For Image Retrieval With Relevance Feedback, Lei Wang, Kap Luk Chan, Xuejian Xiong
A Sub-Vector Weighting Scheme For Image Retrieval With Relevance Feedback, Lei Wang, Kap Luk Chan, Xuejian Xiong
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
In this paper, a sub-vector weighting scheme is proposed for the case of small sample in image retrieval with relevance feedback. By partitioning a multi-dimensional visual feature vector to multiple sub-vectors, the singularity problem caused by small sample can be avoided by the lower dimensionality of the sub-vectors. Then the optimal weighting can be performed on these sub-vectors respectively and the similarity scores obtained are combined as the final score to rank the database images. Experimental results demonstrated that the proposed weighting scheme can significantly improve the efficacy of image retrieval with relevance feedback.
Environmental Factors Associated With Adults' Participation In Physical Activity: A Review, Nancy Humpel, Neville Owen, Eva Leslie
Environmental Factors Associated With Adults' Participation In Physical Activity: A Review, Nancy Humpel, Neville Owen, Eva Leslie
Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)
Background: Promoting physical activity is a public health priority, and changes in the environmental contexts of adults’ activity choices are believed to be crucial. However, of the factors associated with physical activity, environmental influences are among the least understood. Method: Using journal scans and computerized literature database searches, we identified 19 quantitative studies that assessed the relationships with physical activity behavior of perceived and objectively determined physical environment attributes. Findings were categorized into those examining five categories: accessibility of facilities, opportunities for activity, weather, safety, and aesthetic attributes. Results: Accessibility, opportunities, and aesthetic attributes had significant associations with physical activity. …
Knowledge About Typical Source Output Influences Perceived Auditory Distance, John W. Philbeck, Donald H. Mershon
Knowledge About Typical Source Output Influences Perceived Auditory Distance, John W. Philbeck, Donald H. Mershon
Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)
Vocal effort is known to influence the judged distance of speechsound sources. The present research examined whether this influence is due to long-term experience gained prior to the experiment versus short-term experience gained from exposure to speech stimuli earlier in the same experiment. Speech recordings were presented to 192 blindfolded listeners at three levels of vocal output. Even upon the first presentation, shouting voices were reported as appearing farthest, whispered voices closest. This suggests that auditory distance perception can be affected by past experience in a way that does not require explicit comparisons between individual stimuli.

This study aimed to evaluate whether a stairpromoting signed intervention could increase the use of the stairs over the elevator in a health-care facility. A time-series design was conducted over 12 weeks. Data were collected before, during and after displaying a signed intervention during weeks 4–5 and 8–9. Evaluation included anonymous counts recorded by an objective unobtrusive motion-sensing device of people entering the elevator or the stairs. Self-report data on stair use by hospital staff were also collected. Stair use significantly increased after the first intervention phase (P 0.02), but after the intervention was removed stair use decreased back towards …

Surface Reflectance Properties Of Antarctic Moss And Their Relationship To Plant Species, Pigment Composition And Photosynthetic Function, C. E. Lovelock, Sharon A. Robinson
Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)
We investigated how surface reflectance properties and pigment concentrations of Antarctic moss varied over species, sites, microtopography, and with water content. We found that species had significantly different surface reflectance properties, particularly in the region of the red edge (approximately 700 nm), but this did not correlate strongly with pigment concentrations. Surface reflectance of moss also varied in the visible region and in the characteristics of the red edge over different sites. Reflectance parameters, such as the Photochemical Reflectance Index (PRI) and Cold Hard Band (CBH) were useful discriminators of site, microtopographic position and water content. The PRI was correlated …

Was The Ad 1607 Coastal Flooding Event In The Severn Estuary And Bristol Channel (Uk) Due To A Tsunami?, Edward A. Bryant, S. K. Haslett
Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)
Extensive coastal lowlands known as Levels border the Severn Estuary and Bristol Channel in southwest Britain. The Levels are the result of many years of salt marsh reclamation, apparently initiated during the Roman Period, through a programme of sea bank construction. The altitude of the Levels is typically between 5-6 m Ordnance Datum (OD), an altitude that is below the current Mean High Water Springs level in the Severn Estuary. Therefore, the Levels are vulnerable to flooding, not only from river sources, but also from the sea at times when sea banks are overtopped and/or breached. A number of significant …

P300 Amplitude Is Determined By Target-To-Target Interval, C. J. Gonsalvez, J. Polich
Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences - Papers (Archive)
P300 event-related brain potential (ERP) measures are affected by target stimulus probability, the number of nontargets preceding the target in the stimulus sequence structure, and interstimulus interval (ISI). Each of these factors contributes to the target-to-target interval (TTI), which also has been found to affect P300. The present study employed a variant of the oddball paradigm and manipulated the number of preceding nontarget stimuli (0, 1, 2, 3) and ISI (1, 2, 4 s) in order to systematically assess TTI effects on P300 values from auditory and visual stimuli. Number of preceding nontargets generally produced stronger effects than ISI in …

Marlboro''S Marketing In Western Europe: Is It Ethical?, Sandra C. Jones
Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences - Papers (Archive)
There has been considerable publicity in the United States and Australia opposing the cigarette marketing efforts of British and U.S. tobacco companies in Eastern Europe. However, little attention has been paid to the marketing campaigns ofthe same companies in Western Europe, perhaps on the assumption that Western Europeans are too sophisticated to fall for the marketing tricks that have worked elsewhere over the last several decades. However, smoking rates are on the increase in many Western European countries, where tobacco advertising is largely unregulated. This paper analyzes magazine advertising for the Marlboro brand targeted at young adults in The Netherlands …
