Ground Vibration Associated With Pipe Bursting, Alan Atalah, Paul Hadala, Ray Sterling Mar 2004

Ground Vibration Associated With Pipe Bursting, Alan Atalah, Paul Hadala, Ray Sterling

Construction Management Faculty Publications

Pipe bursting is a trenchless pipe replacement technique that offers advantages of low cost, reduced surface disturbance, and the ability to replace an old pipe with a new pipe of equal or larger diameter and capacity. Concerns about the use of the method have centered principally on the ground movements and vibrations produced by the technique - particularly when existing pipe is being replaced by a larger diameter pipe- and also on any damage experienced by the replacement pipe as it is being pulled into the ground. These concerns motivated the Trenchless Technology Center (TTC) to conduct a research project …

Preparing Cost Engineers For Today's Construction Industry Challenges, Kenneth Robson, Douglas D. Gransberg Feb 2004

Preparing Cost Engineers For Today's Construction Industry Challenges, Kenneth Robson, Douglas D. Gransberg

Douglas D. Gransberg

Today's cost engineer must be comfortable working in the world of performance criteria rather than yesterday's legalistic prescriptive specifications. This requires a better understanding of the owner's requirements and a more responsive business approach. While these skills are certainly being acquired on the job by today's practicing cost engineers, it is incumbent upon university construction education programs to adjust the curriculum and ensure that entry-level cost engineers arc entering the industry with the educational background to quickly assimilate into this new, faster-paced environment. Thus, the purpose of this article is to describe how the University of Oklahoma's Construction Science program …

Neural Networks For Estimating The Productivity Of Brick Works And Plastering Works In Egypt, Mohamed Aly Masoud Feb 2004

Neural Networks For Estimating The Productivity Of Brick Works And Plastering Works In Egypt, Mohamed Aly Masoud

Archived Theses and Dissertations

Neural networks have proven apparent success in solving a wide variety of problems. Various engineering applications in particular were studied using these powerful tools.

The Neural network resembles the function of the human brain. A training

process has to be applied first in order that the network acquires knowledge through learning. Then the network can generalize predicted solutions based on the a mount and accuracy of the training data. The target of this research is to develop two neural networks that can predict the productivity of two common construction-finishing activities, which are brick and plaster works. In order to adequately …

Recycled Concrete Properties And Feasibility, Mourad Nabil Shenouda Feb 2004

Recycled Concrete Properties And Feasibility, Mourad Nabil Shenouda

Archived Theses and Dissertations

As conventional good quality aggregates are becoming scarce in some zones in Egypt and many areas worldwide, and as environmental concerns are raised on dumping old and fresh concrete in landfills, recycled concrete has been receiving increased interest worldwide for its potential environmental, economic and technical merits. In fact, many countries have adopted such concrete in their codes and the majority of their old concrete is being recycled. An attempt is being made to trigger factors and means that enhance the economic feasibility of recycled concrete. The overall goal of this work is to pinpoint strength and deficiencies in this …

Enabling The Re-Engineering Of Material Purchasing In The Construction Industry By The Effective Use Of Information Technology, Alan V. Hore, Roger West

Conference papers

The current methods of ordering, delivering and invoicing of materials in the construction industry is enormously inefficient, with vast quantities of paperwork, duplication of effort, scanning, re-keying and resolving mismatches between invoices, delivery dockets and purchase orders. This paper sets out the results of a successful 2005 pilot project which achieved a three-way electronic match of the purchase order, delivery note and supplier invoice information. The paper goes on to describe the opportunities and challenges of introducing such a system in the Irish construction industry

A Proposal For Re-Engineering The Procurement Of Building Materials By Effective Use Of Ict, Alan V. Hore, Roger West

Conference papers

This paper seeks to establish the case for re-engineering the procurement of materials in the Irish construction industry. The authors make their observations from witnessing, first-hand, the operation of a purchasing function in a large contracting organisation in the Republic of Ireland. The authors identify the core problems that exist in the current mainly paper-based process and present a strong case for the re-engineering of the process by the adoption of a fully integrated Information Communications Technology (ICT) solution

Understanding Manufacturing Energy Use Through Statistical Analysis, J. Kelly Kissock, John Seryak Jan 2004

Understanding Manufacturing Energy Use Through Statistical Analysis, J. Kelly Kissock, John Seryak

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Energy in manufacturing facilities is used for direct production of goods, space conditioning, and general facility support such as lighting. This paper presents a methodology for statistically analyzing plant energy use in terms of these major end uses. The methodology uses as few as 60 data points that are relatively easy for most plants to obtain. Multivariable change-point models of electricity and natural gas use as functions of outdoor air temperature and production data are then developed. The statistical models can be used to predict energy use for energy budgeting, measure savings, determine cost structures, and diagnostic purposes. Moreover, in …

Innovative Contracting Prequalification/Selecion Model Using Analytical Hierarchy Process (Ahp), Saad J. Zidan Dec 2003

Innovative Contracting Prequalification/Selecion Model Using Analytical Hierarchy Process (Ahp), Saad J. Zidan

Masters Theses

Design-Build, Cost-Plus-Time, and warranty are the three innovative contracting methods that the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) decided to fund. FHWA allowed the usage of these methods in federally funded projects if this will result in reducing time, improving quality, and saving tax payers' money. Prequalification is recognized as the best way of assuring that contractors do have the required qualifications to deliver projects successfully. Prequalification is even more critical when low-bid selection method is used with any of the innovative contracting, since incompetent contractors may get awarded for low-bids that are not based on valid assumptions.

This study presents a …

An Evaluation Of Public Construction Contracting Methods For The Public Building Sector In Oregon Using Data Envelopment Analysis, Gerald Herman Williams Jr. Sep 2003

An Evaluation Of Public Construction Contracting Methods For The Public Building Sector In Oregon Using Data Envelopment Analysis, Gerald Herman Williams Jr.

Dissertations and Theses

Since 1976 public agencies in Oregon have been allowed to select construction contractors using a "qualification" based competition instead of the more typical lowest responsible bid or Design-Bid-Build (DBB) basis. Since 1985, at least 136 such selections, commonly known as CM/GC for Construction Manager/General Contractor, have been made. The results of this policy have not previously been analyzed. This research compares these selection methods, seeking to answer the following questions:

  1. Does the CMl/GC method result in projects that differ from DBB projects regarding cost and schedule control?

  2. Are CMl/GC projects more efficient than DBB projects, where efficiency is defined as …

A Descriptive Performance Model Of Small, Low Cost, Diskless Beowulf Clusters, Curtis R. Nielson Sep 2003

A Descriptive Performance Model Of Small, Low Cost, Diskless Beowulf Clusters, Curtis R. Nielson

Theses and Dissertations

Commodity supercomputing clusters known as Beowulf clusters, have become a low cost alternative to traditional supercomputers. Beowulf clusters combine inexpensive computers and specialized software to achieve supercomputing power. The processing nodes in a diskless Beowulf cluster do not have a local hard disk unlike the nodes in most commodity clusters. Research has provided performance information for diskless clusters built with expensive, high performance equipment. Beowulf clusters use commodity off-the-shell hardware, and little information is available about their performance. This research includes the construction of several diskless Beowulf clusters. Using the NAS Parallel Benchmarks, the performance of these clusters was measured. …
