ASCE recently released two new SUE standards—ASCE 38-22 is the updated SUE standard commonly used during the utility coordination process during design, and ASCE 75-22 is the new utility as-built standard that is essential for the accurate location of newly relocated facilities in construction. This presentation will illustrate the interaction and relationship between SUE and utility coordination to enhance project deliverables and reduce risk during construction.

In general, weathered shale underlain by shale interbedded with limestone is the main forma-tion that underlies many of the slopes adjacent to the Ohio River in southern Indiana. During wet periods the weathered shale exhibits a sig-nificant decrease in strength, which has led to a number of landslides. In this session several case histories will be presented where drilled shafts have been used to repair and improve the safety of homes and roadways.

In 2019 a new INDOT Specification went into effect for waterproofing on concrete pipes and three- and four-sided boxes. The new specification decreased the leakage at these structures joints from 95% to less than 5%. INDOT came out with specifications for a very early strength concrete to use on bridge deck overlays. This concrete is fast setting, which allows overlays to be performed over a weekend and benefits the traveling public with a short duration of traffic interference. Cure time to reach the strength requirement is 3 hours. E&B Paving performed the first application with the new spec on August 26, 2018. Many changes were also made to the INDOT Specification Section 722.

Until recently portable traffic signals, which are mounted on towable trailer supports, were not allowed in Indiana. However, portable signals have many advantages over fixed temporary signals, so the Indiana Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices was revised to allow them, and specifications for their use are now in place. This presentation provides an overview of portable signals, including INDOT’s current design and specification requirements for these devices.

The system was developed by Pavia Systems in partnership with the National Asphalt Pavement Association.
