Standardizing Hands-On Building Activities In Commercial Construction Management And Recommendations For Semester Conversion Adaptations, Lauren T. Mcclurg

Construction Management

CM 313 Commercial Construction Management at Cal Poly is an integrated lab course and one of the main hands-on learning experiences construction management students participate in. It is currently administered in the quarter system and as the university transitions to the semester calendar, the lab needs to be converted in order to accommodate this change. The main purpose of this project was to document existing practices and improve the process and experience for students, instructional students assistants, Simpson Strong Tie coordinator, and other professors of CM 313. Addition Of An Internship Prep Course To The Cm Curriculum, Zachary C. Boyle Dec 2022

Addition Of An Internship Prep Course To The Cm Curriculum, Zachary C. Boyle

Construction Management

The Cal Poly Construction Management program does an amazing job giving students opportunities to receive summer internships. Just about every student in the CM program will have some form of summer internship during their time at Cal Poly. All CM classes are designed to prepare students for internships. That being said, there is no specific class within the CM curriculum that is 100% Internship focused. Allowing students an opportunity to take a course that would focus on preparing them for their summer internships, students will be more confident and better equipped to take on the tasks of an intern at …

Re-Assessing The Granite Heavy Civil Minor, Natalie H. Holnes

Construction Management

This research-based project analyzes issues within the Granite Heavy Civil Minor that contribute to declining student retention. This document specifically focuses on the program’s course curriculum and graduation date extensions as major drivers of student withdrawals from the minor. Two separate surveys were conducted from students within the minor and students who had dropped out of the minor, to gauge the specific issues students have with the program. The results concluded that many students dislike certain courses in the curriculum, such as CE 222 and CE 321, and felt that these required courses were unessential and unhelpful in preparing them …

By offering this class as a technical elective, students will be given the opportunity to build off their previous knowledge of green building and pursue a certification that will help …

Creating A Demolition Topic Course, Eli Jeremiah Lipton Mar 2022

Creating A Demolition Topic Course, Eli Jeremiah Lipton

Construction Management

Demolition is as old as construction itself and has always played an integral role in the construction process. That is, however, not the reality of the Construction Management (CM) program at California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly). The current curriculum covers a wide range of topics and prepares students to be able to join any residential, commercial, and heavy civil projects. These projects all have something in common, the demolition process. Undergraduates are not prepared with the basic demolition knowledge to be successful in the industry. Demolition is overlooked at Cal Poly and is not a primary focus in any …

Effects Of Cal Poly Construction Management Software Curriculum On Graduate Employment Choices, Andrew Holland

Construction Management

As technology continues to advance at an accelerated pace, the construction industry struggles to keep up with these rapid changes. Understanding and adopting new technologies, specifically software, are key to the future of the construction industry. Studies have shown that the slow adoption of software in the industry has more to do with a lack of training than the limitations of the software. New hires out of universities with experience and training in these software are the linchpin to adapting this industry to new technology. The Construction Management Department at Cal Poly is renowned for putting out new hires with …

Ada Code Education In The Construction Management (Cm) Curriculum, William Joseph Cefali

Construction Management

The Americans with Disabilities Act Standards for Accessible Design is becoming an integral part of construction. On many jobsites, recent graduates may not have enough knowledge to adequately catch and fix ADA compliance problems before they become a critical issue. With nearly all students and graduates going to work on projects governed by this code, knowledge of these codes, where to find them, and how to apply them is essential for graduates. Construction Management students believe this information would be very valuable to learn in school, and critical information to help them with their careers when they enter the industry. …

Implementing Coordination Lab And Lesson Into Cm 413 - Job Site, Connor R. Westover

Construction Management

Coordination can make or break a job. The act of coordination and the millions of pieces that go into a single project can directly affect both the schedule and budget of a construction project. Coordination is not a single part of the job, it is an on-going process that continuously involves all entities of the project. The importance of coordination and what it entails is not yet captured in the Cal Poly Construction Management curriculum. The purpose of this project would be to capture that importance and continue to build upon it to better prepare Cal Poly Builders for the …
