How Novels And Short Stories Are Resources For Learning About The Other, Magnus Haavelsrud

The Journal of Social Encounters

Following a study of fiction written by young, black South African authors, narratives written by highly acclaimed, young authors in Norway are discussed as codifications of generative themes. In Paulo Freire´s pedagogy, thematic investigation of generative themes formed the starting point of conscientization. Initial codification of the themes was then discussed in groups of learners. In their de-codification dialogues learners´ own experiences and insights about the theme resulted in a new codification that was discussed and decodified again. When reflection is coupled with action, this ongoing dialectic allows for change in both the learner and the world in which the …

Most of the department’s faculty are older and white and male, but do include a female white professor, Joan Hambling, clearly suffering from marginalization. There is also a young black faculty member named Yasmin McKay, whom Ji-Yoon wants to make the university’s first black tenured professor in the English department. Yaz, as they call her, has published in the top journals and is loved by her students, who flock to take her courses. There are other story dynamics dealing …

New Perspectives: How A Dancefloor Of Paradigms Can Save The World, Gill R. Hall Aug 2023

New Perspectives: How A Dancefloor Of Paradigms Can Save The World, Gill R. Hall

Journal of Conscious Evolution

This paper explores how the consciousness of Indigenous peoples can facilitate the development of new paradigms to address global issues like climate change and adaptation to global warming. It explores how Indigenous and Western notions of consciousness differ and cannot be reconciled in contemporary models of consciousness without colonising Indigenous ways of knowing. It differentiates maternal and patriarchal consciousnesses and contrasts the body/heart pathway found in many Indigenous cultures with the mental field activity of the Western psyche. Using the concept of a multi-paradigmatic dancefloor, I propose a new model for developing global thinking on complex problems, inviting academics and …

Long-Term Outcomes Of Early Adult 4-H Alumni, Nicole Marshall-Wheeler, Roshan Nayak, Anne Iaccopucci, Steven M. Worker

The Journal of Extension

Very little has been published reporting on long-term outcomes experienced by young adults (aged 19 to 34 years old) who participated in 4-H youth development programs. We adopted Gambone et al.’s (2002) framework advancing three long-term outcomes for early adulthood: economic stability, health and well-being, and community involvement. With cross-sectional survey methods, we compared long-term impacts between 693 California 4-H young adult alumni and 373 young adults in a U.S. general population sample who had not participated in 4-H. The results demonstrated that 4-H alumni report more positive long-term outcomes than the U.S. general population sample. The study contributes to …

The Future Of Extension Programming Post-Pandemic: The Need For Diverse Approaches, Andrew Zimbroff Aug 2023

The Future Of Extension Programming Post-Pandemic: The Need For Diverse Approaches, Andrew Zimbroff

The Journal of Extension

The Covid-19 pandemic has been highly disruptive to Extension programming. Online programming has emerged as one of the primary approaches for maintaining engagement with the communities and populations Extension serves. Some have even suggested that it might become the default programming method, even after it is safe to return to in-person programming. In this commentary, I discuss some of the current limitations and challenges inherent in online-only programming -- ones that are often overlooked by Extension personnel. Further, I discuss key factors that Extension personnel should take into account when considering online programming for any future professional efforts.

The issue of the need to recruit and retain faculty has become increasingly discussed in educational literature. Retention programs for faculty play a strategic role in developing the institution, especially when it involves building capacity and maintaining a competitive advantage. The goal for this fundamental research is to illustrate how the qualitative methods applied will identify the factors that influence retention among faculty at the Northern Marianas College (NMC, 2020). To ensure that the case study was conducted thoroughly, a deeper and theoretically sound approach was explored to understand the perceptual views of current faculty and administration on retention. The …

Undetermined Coefficients With Hyperbolic Sines And Cosines, Laurie A. Florio, George L. Fischer Aug 2023

Undetermined Coefficients With Hyperbolic Sines And Cosines, Laurie A. Florio, George L. Fischer

CODEE Journal

The method of undetermined coefficients is commonly applied to solve linear, constant coefficient, non-homogeneous ordinary differential equations when the forcing function is from a selected class of functions. Often the hyperbolic sine and cosine functions are not explicitly included in this list of functions. Through a set of guided examples, this work argues that the hyperbolic sine and cosine ought to be included in the select class of functions. Careful explanation is provided for the necessary treatment of the cases where the argument of the hyperbolic sine and/or cosine functions matches one or both of the roots of the characteristic …
