Alternating Muscle Activation Patterns Across The Deltoid Muscles During Sustained Fatiguing Contractions, Ningzhen Zhao, Xin Yu, Lisa Griffin Feb 2024

Alternating Muscle Activation Patterns Across The Deltoid Muscles During Sustained Fatiguing Contractions, Ningzhen Zhao, Xin Yu, Lisa Griffin

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Alternating muscle activation (AMA) across synergists has been identified in lower-extremity muscles that may function to prolong force output during sustained contractions; however, this has not yet been identified in upper extremity muscles. AMA consists of two periods: co-activation (Co-A), in which a pair of synergists are simultaneously increasing or decreasing EMG amplitude, and trade-off (TO), in which the EMG amplitude of one muscle is increasing while the EMG amplitude of a synergist is decreasing. We hypothesized that TO duration would increase and Co-A duration would decrease during fatigue. PURPOSE: To investigate AMA patterns during sustained submaximal isometric fatiguing …

A Review Of The Song Poet, Vikrant Chap Feb 2024

A Review Of The Song Poet, Vikrant Chap

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

The Song Poet is a collection of Kwv txhiaj (Hmong songs) by Kao Kalia Yang and her father Bee Yang. The songs were the senior Yang’s way of honoring Hmong traditions and history. The collection symbolized his careful selection of language to communicate softly with family, even during the war. His nurturing words accompanied his family’s survival through those difficult moments. However, at one point in his life, the songs refused to unfold, disrupting the happy chapters. To honor her father’s legacy, Kao Kalia Yang completed his songs in The Song Poet. The album begins with a note on Bee …

Moving Forward In The Wake Of The Pandemic: Shifting From Schools Acting Alone To Engaged Partnerships With Families And Communities, Sheri S. Williams Feb 2024

Moving Forward In The Wake Of The Pandemic: Shifting From Schools Acting Alone To Engaged Partnerships With Families And Communities, Sheri S. Williams

The William & Mary Educational Review

Workplace shortages are a top concern for schools in times of calm and even more troubling in times of stress. Burnout is especially widespread in stressful situations of disrupted learning, trauma, and discord (e.g., Diliberti & Schwartz, 2022; Thomas et al., 2019). In the wake of the pandemic, educators struggled to deal with the stressors on their own (IES, 2022). It became clear that schools could no longer work in isolation. Moving forward in the wake of the pandemic required an intentional shift in purpose from isolated classrooms to interconnected partnerships with families and communities. In the path to recovery, …

Engaging Latinx Students: A Path To Life-Long Learning, Paola Mendizabal

The William & Mary Educational Review

Although the Latino ethnic group is the largest minority and the fastest growing subgroup in the United States, they are one of the most underserved groups in public schools. This is due to many systemic issues; however, this paper focuses on student engagement. Increasing student engagement decreases student dropout rates. If we can foster high levels of engagement with Latinx students in K-12, they are more likely to graduate high school possibly with aspirations to further their education. This conceptual paper aims to answer the following questions: What factors inhibit and/or contribute to Latinx students' engagement? How do we engage …

Applying Street-Level Bureaucracy Theory To Understand The Barriers To The Implementation Of Restorative Justice In Public School Organizations, Eric J. Reed Feb 2024

Applying Street-Level Bureaucracy Theory To Understand The Barriers To The Implementation Of Restorative Justice In Public School Organizations, Eric J. Reed

The William & Mary Educational Review

This systematic review identifies the barriers to implementing restorative justice programs in public school organizations. Due to the novelty of restorative justice in schools, barriers often hamper the implementation process. Thus, it was necessary to identify barriers and how they can be mitigated. The PRISMA tool was utilized to examine 17 studies. The review harnessed Lipsky’s (1980) street-level bureaucracy framework to understand the roles of street-level bureaucrats in the education bureaucracy and to understand how the barriers align with the variables that comprise the framework. The results indicated that several barriers existed which include resources, bureaucratic discretion, and role ambiguity.

Development And Validation Of The Sense Of Belonging Among Counselor Education Students Survey (Sobaces)., Allison Fears

The William & Mary Educational Review

Sense of belonging among students has been studied extensively (Gopalan & Brady, 2020), and has been shown to be a predictor of success, engagement, and well-being in college students. While studies have investigated a sense of belonging amongst specific marginalized groups within a university (e.g. Duran et al., 2020; Lewis et al., 2021; Sims et al., 2020) there have been few studies that examine a sense of belonging among master students in counselor education programs. This paper will outline the development and validation of a new instrument, Sense of Belonging among Counselor Education Students (SOBACES).

Solving Word Problems With Rads: Read, Ask Questions, Draw And Solve, Tolulope Sulaimon, Sheila Alber-Morgan, Moira Konrad

Constellations: Online STEM Teacher Education Journal

Addressing the inherent complexity of word problem solving (WPS) in mathematics education requires a multifaceted approach. While recent research has predominantly emphasized problem representation, the often-overlooked process of problem comprehension is equally crucial. One promising strategy is the integration of self-questioning from a schema perspective, which empowers students to activate their prior knowledge, enhance comprehension, and construct meaningful problem representations. Additionally, the RADS (Read, Ask Questions, Draw, and Solve) framework provides a structured and systematic approach to WPS, combining schema-based instruction and self-questioning to equip students with a comprehensive problem-solving toolkit. By integrating self-questioning into RADS, educators can guide students …

Real #Hotgirl Sh*T: Practical Application Of Intersectional Re-Presentation Instruction, Jessica F. Love Feb 2024

Real #Hotgirl Sh*T: Practical Application Of Intersectional Re-Presentation Instruction, Jessica F. Love

Feminist Pedagogy

This critical commentary outlines how the Real #HotGirl Sh*T: Megan Thee Stallion & Mediated Hip Hop, Black Feminist and Communication Pedagogy promotes active learning via popular culture and digital media, and it provides a practical model for employing intersectionality in classroom settings. Previous critical media pedagogy exploring minority media re-presentation primarily focused on the effects of master narratives produced by traditional media. This syllabus's incorporation of social and digital media helps students understand how collective minority groups use and interact with media as a political tool to challenge re-presentational regimes. More importantly, this syllabus employs real-world examples of popular culture …

‘Hot Girl Teaching’ In A Faith-Based Environment, Niya Pickett Miller Feb 2024

‘Hot Girl Teaching’ In A Faith-Based Environment, Niya Pickett Miller

Feminist Pedagogy

There is much to learn from Megan Thee Stallion, the self-proclaimed “Hot Girl Coach.” However, her provocative lyrics and hyper-sexuality are challenging to interject into communication-themed classes at a predominantly white, faith-based university where many students come with an expectation for learning that resists mainstream trends and upholds conventional Christian values and conservative ideological ways of thinking about socio-political issues. This commentary offers a faith-based and feminist perspective about how including Black popular culture, and (more broadly) culturally diverse texts in predominately white, faith-based classrooms can work and why such centering does not contradict biblical principles.
