Referendums Education In The United States: Reform Or Assimilation?, Francisco Ramos Dec 2016

Referendums Education In The United States: Reform Or Assimilation?, Francisco Ramos

Franciso Ramos

The antibilingüe movement that is spreading across the United States has become one of the most controversial in the debate on the education of linguistic minorities issues. Ron Unz, the California millionaire who has managed to eliminate bilingual programs in California and Arizona and trying to do the same today in Colorado and Massachusetts, is a clear example of assimilationist movement, which argues that immigrants should give up their languages and vernacular cultures to integrate into American society. This article summarizes the history of bilingualism in the United States, focusing on decisions that have affected the education of minority students, …

Constantine The Great And Christian Imperial Theocracy, Charles Matson Odahl Dec 2016

Constantine The Great And Christian Imperial Theocracy, Charles Matson Odahl

Charles M. Odahl

From his Christian conversion under the influence of revelatory experiences outside Rome in A.D. 312 until his burial as the thirteenth Apostle at Constantinople in 337, Constantine the Great, the first Christian emperor of the Roman world, initiated the role of and set the model for Christian imperial theocracy. Through his relationship with the Christian Divinity, his study of the Bible and apologia with leading Catholic intellectuals, and his assessments of divine interventions in imperial history, the emperor came to feel that he had been placed in power by the Almighty God of Christianity, that he had been chosen as …

The Significance Of The Place-Historical Narratives In The Context Of Spatial Perspective, John Skrzypaszek Nov 2016

The Significance Of The Place-Historical Narratives In The Context Of Spatial Perspective, John Skrzypaszek

John Skrzypaszek

This paper explores the significance of the relationship between the historic heritage building named Sunnyside and the unique narrative of the land. The argument flows from a case study involving a proposal to relocate the named building to a different location. In contrast, this study argues that relocation to a new site would generate a different story. For this purpose, it provides supportive historical evidence to show the close relational tie between the historic building, its actual site and the place-historical narrative. The hub of the discussion centres on the concept of spatial perspective and its contribution to the sustainability …

Heterogeneous Immunological Landscapes And Medieval Plague : An Invitation To A New Dialogue Between Historians And Immunologists., Fabian Crespo, Matthew B. Lawrenz Nov 2016

Heterogeneous Immunological Landscapes And Medieval Plague : An Invitation To A New Dialogue Between Historians And Immunologists., Fabian Crespo, Matthew B. Lawrenz

Fabian Crespo

Efforts to understand the differential mortality caused by plague must account for many factors, including human immune responses. In this essay we are particularly interested in those people who were exposed to the Yersinia pestis pathogen during the Black Death, but who had differing fates—survival or death—that could depend on which individuals (once infected) were able to mount an appropriate immune response as a result of biological, environmental, and social factors. The proposed model suggests that historians of the medieval world could make a significant contribution to the study of human health, and especially the role of human immunology in …

Ovid Butler And The Founding Of Butler University, Sally Childs-Helton Oct 2016

Ovid Butler And The Founding Of Butler University, Sally Childs-Helton

Sally Childs-Helton

Without Ovid Butler, there would be no Butler University today. The history of the man and the university are intimately and inextricably entwined; without Ovid Butler's vision, leadership, and financial support, the university may not have come into being, or survived its early years. One hundred and sixty years after it was chartered, Butler University today is a private, not-for-profit, comprehensive university located in Indianapolis, Indiana. Butler offers more than 65 majors from six colleges: Liberal Arts and Sciences, Education, Pharmacy, Business, Fine Arts, and Communication. The unofficial fall semester 2010 enrollment is 4,051 full-time undergraduates and 4,575 total students …

The Legend Of William Mckenzie, Anzac Chaplain, Daniel Reynaud Oct 2016

The Legend Of William Mckenzie, Anzac Chaplain, Daniel Reynaud

Daniel Reynaud

William McKenzie was a Chaplain in the First AIF who achieved legendary status during and after the Great War. Stories about him abounded, some gaining sufficient credibility to be included in formal biographies and entries in published dictionaries of biography. This paper explores the legends and seeks to establish their factuality, as well as attempt to explain the source, motivation and reason for the success of the legends.

South Pacific Cultures And The Concept And Practice Of History, Daniel Reynaud Oct 2016

South Pacific Cultures And The Concept And Practice Of History, Daniel Reynaud

Daniel Reynaud

The practice of history is often assumed to be transparent and universal, but in fact it is a highly specialised phenomenon which exists only in certain societies. This raises problems for those writing about cultures where the practice of history has not traditionally existed, one such region being the South Pacific. A better understanding of the oral nature of Pacific societies and the way in which this affects one’s understanding of the past will be helpful to the historian of this region, and others like it.

Religion And The Anzac Legend On Screen, Daniel Reynaud Oct 2016

Religion And The Anzac Legend On Screen, Daniel Reynaud

Daniel Reynaud

This article explores the (non)relationship between religion and the Anzac story in Australian cinema and television dramas. It draws parallels between the absence of religious discussion in written literature and popular memory and the same absences in Anzac cinema. Anzac cinema has idealised and glorified the Anzac soldier, relocating spirituality from a religious force to a secular nationalism. The rare productions that show an engagement between religion and Anzac portray religion as a spent force in comparison to the new spirit of secular Anzac.

Fighting Mac: The Anzac Chaplain, Daniel Reynaud Oct 2016

Fighting Mac: The Anzac Chaplain, Daniel Reynaud

Daniel Reynaud

Ask Australians who was the most famous Anzac of the First World War and most will probably answer, "Simpson, the man with the donkey". But while Simpson is a household name in Australia today, the soldiers who fought in the First World War would give a different answer.

Vaclav Havel, Jan Patocka: The Powerless And The Shaken, Daniel Brennan Oct 2016

Vaclav Havel, Jan Patocka: The Powerless And The Shaken, Daniel Brennan

Daniel Brennan

This article makes a case for considering Vaclav Havel's political theory of the nature of dissent as more politically grounded than that of his mentor fan Patoka. Against the criticism of Havel, which describes him as a less rigorous repeater of Patocka's ideas, this paper demonstrates how Havel appropriated Patocka's idea that the dissident is, similarly to a World War I trench soldier, fighting in a contemporary front in a demobilized war. However I argue that in Havel's thought, the understanding of dissent takes on a more practical and useful complexion than that of Patocka. This paper will explain and …

A Case Of Double Conciousness Americo-Liberians And Indigenous Liberian Relations 1840-1930, Genesys Santana Sep 2016

A Case Of Double Conciousness Americo-Liberians And Indigenous Liberian Relations 1840-1930, Genesys Santana

Genesys Santana

This study argues that the formation of Americo-Liberian identity overwhelmingly relied on White American middle class cultural values despite the founders' criticisms and rejection of racial oppression and slavery. Americo-Liberians' previous participation in a culture that downgrades African heritage fostered the internalization of Western notions of civilization and African inferiority that led them to establish an oppressive regime similar to the one they had escaped from, and even enslaved the indigenous population, which they considered "uncivilized." The study thus investigates how formerly oppressed and enslaved blacks became oppressors and enslavers of other black people in the name of a "civilizing …

History Of Maine's Early Fishing Lures And Their Makers, William B. Krohn Sep 2016

History Of Maine's Early Fishing Lures And Their Makers, William B. Krohn

William B. Krohn

There are numerous cottage industries associated with outdoor recreation in Maine, including the making of boats, canoes, guns, oars, paddles, snowshoes, sleds, and many types of fishing equipment (e.g., flies, lures, rods, reels, and nets). While the history of some of these items have been explored (e.g., early gun makers and bamboo fly-rod makers), the small-scale manufacturing of fishing lures in Maine has gone unstudied. Even the collectors of North American fishing lures, with a few exceptions (e.g., Dunlap Hook, Rangeley Spinner, and Stanley Aluminum Smelt), have over-looked the Pine Tree State. Based on a decade of research, this book …

America’S Legendary Ignorance About Africa Persists, Julius A. Amin Sep 2016

America’S Legendary Ignorance About Africa Persists, Julius A. Amin

Julius A. Amin

In an increasingly interconnected and technological global environment, ignorance of Africa is no longer acceptable. This, especially from major political leaders. Yet, examples of such ignorance are evident in the current American presidential campaign. Neither the Republican nominee Donald J. Trump nor the democratic nominee Hillary R. Clinton has articulated any concrete vision for an African policy.
