England And Aquitaine In The Century Before The Norman Conquest, George Beech Nov 1990

England And Aquitaine In The Century Before The Norman Conquest, George Beech

George T. Beech

A commonplace among English historians today is the importance of English ties with Aquitaine during the later Middle Ages. For some three centuries, historical events came to link the destinies of these two countries and peoples who otherwise differed strikingly in economy, language and culture in general, with lasting consequences for both. It has long been taken for granted by both English and French historians that this association came about abruptly in the 1150s as a result of the ascent to the English throne of Henry of Anjou who, through his marriage to Eleanor, heiress of the duchy of Aquitaine ...

Lynn Dumenil

Analyzes the struggle to create a federal department of education in the 1920s. Details proponents' arguments in favor of efficiency, national control, and cultural homogeneity. Contends that opponents organized against further expansion of federal power. Places the debate within the larger context of progressivism and nativism. (CH)

Unionism And The Political Party Structure Of Northern Ireland, Allan Leonard Mar 1990

Unionism And The Political Party Structure Of Northern Ireland, Allan Leonard

Allan Leonard

This undergraduate independent study examined Unionist political reaction to developments of British Government policy towards Northern Ireland. Namely, Nationalist representatives achieved redress with the British Government, both directly and vis-a-vis the Irish Government, which should have compelled Unionists to pursue a more accommodationalist policy. Regardless, there was a paradoxical drive by integrationists in Northern Ireland for direct electoral candidacy by the Conservative Party in the regional constituency. This paper makes a defence in favour of this campaign, as a means of improving the accountability of British Government policy affecting those in its jurisdiction.

Barton H. Barbour

Memorandum book of James. R. Larkin of St. Louis, Missouri, published in cooperation with the Historical Society of New Mexico. Edited and annotated by Barton H. Barbour. This book presents a rare "health-seekers" diary on the Santa Fe Trail in the 1850s. Larkin visited New Mexico at a time of intensive transition, and witnessed several significant events on the trail and in early Anglo-occupied New Mexico. Few such diaries exist, and Larkin's in one of the earliest and most robust health-seeker diaries known.

Alien Or Accepted? African Perspectives On The Western 'Other' In 15th And 16th Century Art, Kathy Curnow Dec 1989

Alien Or Accepted? African Perspectives On The Western 'Other' In 15th And 16th Century Art, Kathy Curnow

Kathy Curnow

The visual record of Africa's interaction with the West is proving to be a rich source of information concerning the changing natures of ethnographic perception. Post-contact imagery reflects shifting attitudes shaped by political, economic and historical events and trends. Examination of an individual artist's treatment of "the other" and his departure from or conformation with prevailing cultural attitudes can reveal a range of responses and interpretations of the outsider as enemy, a part of daily life, or a being with religious or prestige associations. This article compares ivory carvers' attitudes towards late 15th/early 16th-century Portuguese travelers to ...

Ordering The Urban Environment: City Statutes And City Planning In Medieval Todi, Italy, Samuel D. Gruber Dr.

Samuel D. Gruber, Ph.D.

Discusses the deliberate urban policies that of medieval Todi, Italy that helped create a functioning and beautiful medieval town through explicit laws and the careful micro-planning that utilized an incremental urbanism to create an inter-connected and integrated urban environment. Many of the medieval views visitors assume are part of an "organic" growth are actually careful projections of communal power and order.
