A Robust Method To Determine The Coordinates Of A Wave Source For 3-D Position Sensing, Fernando Figueroa, Ajay Mahajan
Dr. Ajay Mahajan
This work addresses a method for location of a wave source by observing the wave as it reaches various observation points (receivers), or conversely, this is also a method for location of a receiver at an observation point, by probing with waves generated at various sources. The terms observing and probing imply measurement of time-of-flight (TOF) between a source (transmitter) and a receiver. Practical implications of this work include development and improvement of systems that triangulate the position of a point of interest based on TOF measurements to observation points. Typical applications to benefit from this work include 3-D digitization …
Intelligent System Modelling Of A Three-Dimensional Ultrasonic Positioning System Using Neural Networks And Genetic Algorithms, 2015 University of Akron, main campus
Intelligent System Modelling Of A Three-Dimensional Ultrasonic Positioning System Using Neural Networks And Genetic Algorithms, Nishant Unnikrishnan, Ajay Mahajan, Tsuchin Chu
Dr. Ajay Mahajan
This paper presents a neural network model for a three-dimensional ultrasonic position estimation system that uses the difference in the time of arrivals of waves from a transmitter to various receivers. Even though a linearized analytical model for the three-dimensional system exists and is currently being used to estimate the position of the transmitter, its accuracy is highly dependent on complex and time consuming signal conditioning. A neural network approach is developed to train the system based on unconditioned training sets obtained directly from the receivers. It is proposed to use the final trained system to estimate the three-dimensional position …

A Dic Based Ga Optimization Scheme Using Six Variable Chromosomes, Dooheon Kim, Sailesh Pradhan, Tsuchin Chu, Ajay Mahajan
Dr. Ajay Mahajan
A Digital Image Correlation using a Genetic Algorithm based optimization technique for measurement of whole field surface displacements and strains has been described. The GA scheme has been implemented using a six variable system which includes direct measurement of strains. Earlier problems reported during cross-over and blending of chromosomes primarily owing to differences in order of magnitude of the strains and displacements have been overcome by using pre-generated separate look-up tables of equal length for most probable values of u and v displacements as well as the gradients. The indices of these tables have then been used as the chromosomes …

Investigation Of High-Frequency Squeal In A Disc Brake System Using A Friction Layer-Based Coupling Stiffness, Manish Paliwal, Ajay Mahajan, J. Don, Tsuchin Chu, Peter Filip
Dr. Ajay Mahajan
This paper presents a two degree of freedom model for disk brake systems that makes use of the concept of a friction layer-based coupling stiffness. This model is then used to investigate noise and vibration, especially high-frequency squeal. It is shown that for automotive brake systems, the friction layer plays a significant role in the performance characteristics. Hence, the coupling stiffness between the brake pad and the rotor is modelled as a combination of the elastic stiffness of the friction layer superimposed on the coupling modal stiffness of the brake-pad combination. The elastic properties of the friction layer are obtained …

High-Speed String Matching For Network Intrusion Detection, Benfano Soewito, Ajay Mahajan, Ning Weng, Haibo Wang
Dr. Ajay Mahajan
Intrusion detection systems are promising techniques to improve internet security. A daunting challenge in the design of internet intrusion detection systems is how to perform high-speed string matching operations. This paper presents a string matching architecture, consisting of software based classifiers and hardware based verifiers. Based on incoming packet contents, the packet classifiers can dramatically reduce the number of strings to be matched and accordingly, feed the packet to a proper verifier to conduct matching. The paper presents the proposed classifier architecture and discusses the trade-offs in the classifier design. In addition, techniques, including multi-threading FSM, high-speed FSM interface circuits …

Physical Intelligent Sensors, Pavan Bandhil, Sanjeevi Chitikeshi, Ajay Mahajan, Fernando Figueroa
Dr. Ajay Mahajan
This paper proposes the development of intelligent sensors as part of an integrated systems approach, i.e. one treats the sensors as a complete system with its own sensing hardware (the traditional sensor), A/D converters, processing and storage capabilities, software drivers, self-assessment algorithms, communication protocols and evolutionary methodologies that allow them to get better with time. Under a project being undertaken at the NASA s Stennis Space Center, an integrated framework is being developed for the intelligent monitoring of smart elements. These smart elements can be sensors, actuators or other devices. The immediate application is the monitoring of the rocket test …

In-Plane Bulk Material Displacement And Deformation Measurements Using Digital Image Correlation Of Ultrasonic C-Scan Images, Bradley Regez, Ying Zhang, Tsuchin Chu, Jarlen Don, Ajay Mahajan
Dr. Ajay Mahajan
The extension of digital image correlation method to ultrasonic C-scan acoustical speckle images of the bulk is presented in this paper. The approach discussed in this paper is ideally suited to composite materials such as particulate composites, fiber-reinforced plastics, and laminated composites. It can also be effectively employed for critical surfaces that are not within view, such as interfaces and back surfaces. Images taken prior to and after deformation are analyzed to estimate a deformation profile from changes in the image. The aim of the method is to find the displacements and strains of small subsets from the second image …
A Lumped-Parameter Model To Investigate The Effect Of Plantar Pressure On Arterial Blood Flow In A Diabetic Foot, 2015 University of Akron, main campus
A Lumped-Parameter Model To Investigate The Effect Of Plantar Pressure On Arterial Blood Flow In A Diabetic Foot, Carrie Hahn, Ajay Mahajan, Tsuchin Chu, Marco Schoen
Dr. Ajay Mahajan
This paper presents a lumped-parameter model for the big-toe region that investigates the effect of plantar pressure on the diameter of the blood vessels, specifically the arteries, in the presence of arterial and/or tissue changes. The model developed in this paper uses a multi-domain energy system approach to develop the lumped-parameter differential equations. Blood flow is modelled as fluidic flow through compliant pipes that have inertia, stiffness, and damping. The tissue material is treated as a soft compliant material that transmits the external force to the blood vessels. Conclusions have been drawn to show the effect of plantar pressure, tissue …

An Iterative Kalman Filter For A 3d Ultrasonic Position Estimation System, 2015 University of Akron, main campus
An Iterative Kalman Filter For A 3d Ultrasonic Position Estimation System, Sanjeevi Chitikeshi, Ajay Mahajan, Jennifer Akers
Dr. Ajay Mahajan
This paper describes an iterative Kalman Filter to increase the accuracy of a dynamic 3D position estimation system. The novelty of the system lies in the fact that a difference in the time of arrivals is used in conjunction with an estimated speed of sound within the system formulation, and the Kalman Filter is used to further increase the accuracy and robustness of the output. The output is a 3D position of the transmitter obtained from the difference in time of arrivals of the wave burst at multiple receivers fixed within an inertial frame. Results are provided to show the …

Subpixel accuracy, required for measuring displacements and strains accurately, is obtained by using interpolation methods. An innovative adaptive scheme is used to develop a cost surface which is used to match the before and after image subsets with the help of genetic algorithms to search for the optimal match. Some potential applications for …
