Interlaminar Damage Detection In Composite Materials, Hariharan Rangarajan 2019 The University of Akron

Interlaminar Damage Detection In Composite Materials, Hariharan Rangarajan

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Using ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) for high-temperature applications in jet engines increases durability and reduces weight and cooling requirements resulting in improved efficiency and fuel savings. Understanding, detecting, and monitoring different types of damage is essential to achieve optimal performance of CMC components. The Direct Current Potential Drop (DCPD) method is a non-destructive technique of estimating damage in composite materials.

DCPD technique works by measuring nodal potential differences when current is flown through the material. Direct current spreading in different woven and laminate composites is modeled to follow a ladder resistor network in which the nodal voltages decrease exponentially as …

Real-Time Path Planning In Constrained, Uncertain Environments, Randall Christensen, Robert C. Leishman

Faculty Publications

A key enabler of autonomous vehicles is the ability to plan the path of the vehicle to accomplish mission objectives. To be robust to realistic environments, path planners must account for uncertainty in the trajectory of the vehicle as well as uncertainty in the location of obstacles. The uncertainty in the trajectory of the vehicle is a difficult quantity to estimate, and is influenced by coupling between the vehicle dynamics, guidance, navigation, and control system as well as any disturbances acting on the vehicle. Monte Carlo analysis is the conventional approach to determine vehicle dispersion, while accounting for the coupled …

Investigation Of The Evolution Of Hydrophobicity And Wettability Of Paper In Multi-Color Printing Process, C Aydemir, A Karademir, S Imamoglu, Bilge N. Altay, Paul D. Fleming, D Tutak

Bilge Nazli Altay

One of the keys to improving print quality is to experimentally characterize the paper surface, structure and printability to obtain quality control mechanisms. In multi-color prints, determining the differences in the acceptance of the next color ink by the surface of the paper or the ink film that was previously printed is important for print quality. The criteria, such as ink setting, adhesion, color, gloss and density, in the printing process, depend on the wettability and absorbency of the paper. The surface structure of the paper is the most important factor in determining the hydrophobic properties. In this study, wetting …

Effects Of Secondary Stall And Unsteady Free-Stream On Blade Drag And Pitching Moments, Michael Malick

McKelvey School of Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Dynamic stall is a complex aerodynamic phenomenon occurring in helicopter rotors, limiting the flight envelope and causing control linkage damage and instabilities. The Peters-Modarres semi-empirical dynamic stall model is extended to simulate pitching moment and drag in unsteady freestream and yawed flow, including the effects of secondary stall. The aerodynamics are implemented as a state-space model, suitable for time-marching or aeroelastic analyses. With small modifications to the original stall model, secondary stall effects and unsteady freestream can be simulated without adding additional states. An optimization routine determines sets of parameters that minimize the error between the modeled solution and experimental …
