Additive manufacturing is revolutionizing industries ranging from medicine to space. However, the structural characteristics of plastic parts created by these methods are not as well understood as their more established counterparts. This research explored two relevant areas: how the structural characteristics of ULTEM 9085 plastic behaved after exposure to orbital conditions and the design of the cross-sectional area of a beam to be 3-D printed in microgravity based on the expected loads from the printer. To study orbital effects, ULTEM 9085 was printed into 1/4th scale ASTM D638- 14 dogbones using a Stratasys 450mc printer. These dogbones were placed in …

A current challenge in path planning is the ability to efficiently calculate a near-optimum path solution through a highly-constrained environment in near-real time. In addition, computing performance on a small unmanned aerial vehicle is typically limited due to size and weight restrictions. The proposed method determines a solution quickly by first mapping a highly constrained three-dimensional environment to a two-dimensional weighted node surface in which the weighting accounts for both the terrain gradient and the vehicle's performance. Morphing wing technology gives aircraft the ability to change wing shape to control the aircraft and flight performance characteristics. AFIT, AFRL and USU Aero Lab have collaborated to design and test a variable camber compliant wing (VCCW) on a small unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Flight tests demonstrated the wing performance and provided data to refine a VCCW flight simulator. Work was completed with the USU AeroLab-generated MachUp and the actual flight data to improve the simulator to provide results close to those of the actual flight test. Remotely piloted aircraft (RPAs) cannot currently refuel during flight because the latency between the pilot and the aircraft is too great to safely perform aerial refueling maneuvers. However, an AAR system removes this limitation by allowing the tanker to directly control the RP A. The tanker quickly finding the relative position and orientation (pose) of the approaching aircraft is the first step to create an AAR system. Previous work at AFIT demonstrates that stereo camera systems provide robust pose estimation capability. A high-speed projectile impact is a highly complex dynamic problem that can be simplified with the use of finite element analysis solvers. Abaqus/Explicit was used to evaluate the impact of various projectiles using a plane strain setup. Using a baseline stainless steel projectile, the proposed sandwich construction design was analyzed and compared to the baseline projectile. The overall goal was to see if a new composite casing could perform similarly to the simple baseline projectile. As a result of insects or other environmental fouling, surface roughness on wind turbine blades can reduce power output significantly. Superhydrophobic surfaces, though possibly a passive, cost-saving, answer to the problem of ice accretion on wind turbine rotors in cold climates, may alter turbulence development in the blade boundary layer similar to environmental roughness. This work uses an equivalent sand grain extension to the Turbulent Potential model to computationally assess the aerodynamic effects of surface roughness on the s809 airfoil, including a representational superhydrophobic surface. Flow decomposition methods provide systematic ways to extract the flow modes, which can be regarded as the spatial distribution of a coherent structure. They have been successfully used in the study of wake, boundary layer, and mixing. However, real flow structures also possess complex temporal patterns that can hardly be captured using the spatial modes obtained in the decomposition. PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was twofold: (i) develop and test the antimicrobial properties of a polylactic acid- and a polyurethane-based filament, and (ii) use these filaments to manufacture a socket-based prosthesis to verify printability and longevity of the antimicrobial properties. It was hypothesized that the formulation of a novel biocidal copper-based nanocomposite with a biocompatible 3D printing polymer/copolymer can be used for the development of antimicrobial medical devices to mitigate microbial risks during long space flight missions [1, 2, 3].

Student Learning And Retention Using A Flight Training Device: A Case Study, Adeel Khalid

Student learning and retention as a function of the mode of teaching is analyzed in this study. Different groups of students receive information about aircraft flight operations either via lecture, through directed study, a combination of the two or through a pre-recorded flight demonstration video. Their level of learning is assessed by evaluating how well they fly an aircraft and perform a predefined mission using a flight simulator. Scores of different groups are compared qualitatively and quantitatively and students are surveyed after the flight. We Use Molecular Dynamics (MD) Simulations to Study the Transient Evaporation and Condensation of a Pure Fluid Ar in a Nanochannel. in the MD Model, the Evaporation and Condensation of Fluid Ar is Initiated by a Sudden Increase of the Temperature or Periodically Varying the Temperature in the Solid Substrate on One Side of the Nanochannel. in Both Cases, We Find the Transient Evaporation and Condensation Rates Obtained Directly from MD Simulations Are in Good Agreement with the Predictions from the Schrage Relationships. The Rotating Detonation Engine (RDE) has been researched extensively in recent years, but the minimum size limits of an RDE have not been well investigated. The goal of this research was to build an RDE small enough to produce a detonation frequency above 20 kHz with a single detonation wave while also reducing the engine's mass ow rate. An engine with these design characteristics would reduce hazards associated with previous RDE testing. Modern space missions are increasingly transiting cislunar space, requiring expansion of existing Space Traffic Management (STM) functions. Legacy Space Domain Awareness (SDA) systems were not purpose-built to detect and track cislunar objects, which could require acquisition of a new system of systems.
