Creating And Performing A Composition For Tuba And Piano, Joel A. Ragona 2016 Central Washington University

Creating And Performing A Composition For Tuba And Piano, Joel A. Ragona

Undergraduate Honors Theses

In this creative thesis, I compose and perform a six movement art composition for tuba and piano. The reason for this performance and composition is two-fold. First, I am able to express myself in a way that other methods do not allow. Second, I reinforce important skills that will be vital in my future teaching career. To create the composition, I use various compositional methods, but I mainly adjust the composition by listening to it using piano and online compositional software. Preparing the composition for performance requires that I practice for multiple hours and find an accompanist who will perform …

Singen Mit Schubert (Singing With Schubert): A Comparative Study Of Two Children's Choirs, Katherine C. Mclaughlin

Honors Theses

The purpose of this comparative study is to examine the effects of selected works of Franz Schubert on the singing technique, attention span and overall reaction of two children's choirs: the Oxford Children's Chorus and the St. Peter's Children's Choir. In the fall semester of 2015 each choir was given a separate work by Schubert, one in German and one in English, to study throughout the semester and sing one final performance. By video recording each rehearsal and using Scribe 4 Software analysis, I was able to record the children's singing technique and attention span. Each choir was given a …

Challenges In Beginning Trombone Pedagogy, Robert Sobnosky 2016 University of Akron

Challenges In Beginning Trombone Pedagogy, Robert Sobnosky

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The development of strong fundamental skills is essential for success on any instrument. Beginning wind players must be carefully monitored so they can develop the good playing habits and basic skills that form the foundations of strong musicianship. Each instrument presents its own unique challenges. The trombone could be considered the most unique of the beginning band instruments due to size, slide, and technique. These challenges can lead to a number of problems that music educators must be able to recognize and correct. For this project, six music educators with experience teaching beginning trombone students were interviewed about common problems …

Using Mathematical Research Methods To Solve A Problem In Music Theory Instruction, Specifically, The Teaching Of Secondary Dominant Chords, Angela Ulrich 2016 University of Akron

Using Mathematical Research Methods To Solve A Problem In Music Theory Instruction, Specifically, The Teaching Of Secondary Dominant Chords, Angela Ulrich

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The mathematical method for research is used to find a solution to a problem in music theory: understanding and identifying secondary dominant chords. By reviewing and assessing the teaching methods of university professors and theory textbooks, and comparing those findings with student reviews, a new method for teaching the concept is developed. The proposed system incorporates aural, visual, and kinetic exercises to serve every learner. The literature review and sample unit plan are followed by a possible procedure for testing the effectiveness of the new method.

The Art And Science Of Becoming A Successful Studio Teacher, Teresa A. Bellamy 2016 University of Akron

The Art And Science Of Becoming A Successful Studio Teacher, Teresa A. Bellamy

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

For most professional musicians, it is important to possess the skills necessary to be a studio teacher. While it is crucial to be confident in the actual pedagogical technique required of an instrumental teacher, it is imperative that music teachers also have a thorough knowledge of proper business and marketing tools. In this project, a close examination of the methods used to acquire and use such skills has been made. The research for this project was done in the form of interviews. Four professional music teachers were interviewed on the above topics.

An Analysis Of Les Yeux Clos Ii By Toru Takemitsu, Jason Mile 2016 Western University

An Analysis Of Les Yeux Clos Ii By Toru Takemitsu, Jason Mile

2016 Undergraduate Awards

This paper presents an analysis for Les Yeux Clos II (1989), a solo piano piece written by Toru Takemitsu, based on a lithograph by Odilon Redon. The piece falls within Takemitsu’s “Third Period” which Timothy Koozin describes as a combination of “Western syntax” and “Japanese tradition.” By identifying the influences of Western composers, such as John Cage and Olivier Messiaen, and Japanese tradition, this paper analyzes the extent to which both Western and Eastern traditions can be identified in this piece. Based on comments by Takemitsu and John Cage, the form of the piece is defined by means of motivic …

Small Jazz Ensembles And Ideals Of Urban Social Interaction, Kaori Otera Chen 2016 University at Albany, State University of New York

Small Jazz Ensembles And Ideals Of Urban Social Interaction, Kaori Otera Chen

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

There is general consensus in urban theory that "community" is good. Nevertheless people in communities may or may not interact to a significant extent with one another nor engage in intertwined social lives, yet tend to claim within-group unity and harmony. A musical model of interaction and engagement may offer a new perspective on the dynamics of community. By listening closely I explore how musicians in small jazz ensembles interact with one another and function during their collective music-making processes and find a set of musical behaviors that exhibits an ideal model for human interaction and engagement in the social …

A Brief Exploration Of Variances In Larry Grenadier’S Approach To Soloing In Piano Trio And Duo Contexts On Selected Recordings Of All The Things You Are And Long Ago And Far Away, Alistair Campbell Peel 2016 Edith Cowan University

A Brief Exploration Of Variances In Larry Grenadier’S Approach To Soloing In Piano Trio And Duo Contexts On Selected Recordings Of All The Things You Are And Long Ago And Far Away, Alistair Campbell Peel

Theses : Honours

Larry Grenadier is a highly accomplished and acclaimed modern jazz bassist. Amongst his many collaborations with the luminaries of jazz, he is probably best known for his enduring partnership with the Brad Mehldau trio, which has been continuous since 1994.

This study focuses on Grenadier’s improvisational style, specifically aiming to contrast his approach in piano trio and drumless piano-bass duo contexts, in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Four musical transcriptions have been completed (one performance in each ensemble setting of the standards All the Things You Are and Long Ago and Far Away) and analysed for aspects such …

A Critical Examination Of The Rehearsal Frame Model, Allison Elise Carroll 2016 Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College

A Critical Examination Of The Rehearsal Frame Model, Allison Elise Carroll

LSU Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the practical adequacy of Duke’s (1994) rehearsal frame model as a “middle ground” perspective sequential outline of rehearsal events that lead to positive musical change. Observation and video recording of three accomplished high school band directors’ rehearsals generated data that allowed for a comparison between the model and actual practice. Results suggested that all parts of the original model need not be present, nor must they occur in the originally stated order for rehearsal frames to take place and direct students toward positive musical change. An amended model of the rehearsal frame …

April 2016

C Reverse for Care is organized in a five part care cycle: Wash, Rinse, Spin, Dry, and Wear. The piece is a study in reversibility. It is an effort to learn, to understand what it means to care, and an effort to try to achieve reciprocal balance in any relationship, whether it is with a family member, a partner, or a friend.

The staging is designed for circular movement, suggesting a cycle that is repeated after completion. The spacial structure of the piece is based on the shape of the white ginger lily, the national flower …

Senior Projects Spring 2016

Senior Project submitted to The Division of Arts of Bard College

My time at Bard has led me to all kinds of academic, musical, social, and professional worlds that have shaped me into the musician and person I am today. That is not to say that there were not any bumps in the road along the way. After my freshman year at Bard, which was admittedly one of the hardest years of my life, I had spiraled into an unbelievable amount of anxiety socially, musically, and academically and it became very evident that I needed time to figure out these …
