If historians of Indian classical music have been obliged to rely primarily upon a finite and often enigmatic set of treatises and iconographic sources, historical studies of semi-classical genres like thumri and ghazal confront even more formidable challenges. Such styles and their predecessors were largely ignored by Sanskrit theoreticians, who tended to be more interested in hoary modal and metrical systems than in contemporary vernacular or regional-language genres sung by courtesans. It is thus inevitable that attempts to reconstruct the development of such genres involve considerable amounts of conjecture, and in some senses raise more questions than they answer. Nevertheless, …
“I’Ll Fly Away”: The Music And Career Of Albert E. Brumley, 2010 University of Kentucky
“I’Ll Fly Away”: The Music And Career Of Albert E. Brumley, Kevin Donald Kehrberg
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Albert E. Brumley (1905-1977) was the most influential American gospel song composer of the twentieth century, penning such “classics” within the genre as “Jesus, Hold My Hand,” “I’ll Meet You in the Morning,” “If We Never Meet Again,” “Turn Your Radio On,” and “Rank Strangers to Me.” His “I’ll Fly Away” has become the most recorded gospel song in American history with over one thousand recordings to date, and several of his works transcend cultural boundaries of style, genre, race, denomination, and doctrine. However, the racialized historiography of American gospel music has left Brumley—from America’s lesser-known white gospel traditions of …

Draganski And Schafer: A Perspective On Works For Voice And Woodwind Quintet, Susan Elizabeth Ruggiero
LSU Major Papers
The purpose of this document is to explore the relationship between voice and woodwind quintet by examining two prominent multi-movement works in the repertoire, Minnelieder: Love Songs from the Medieval German for mezzo soprano and wind quintet by R. Murray Schafer and Six Songs on Mother Goose Rhymes for soprano and woodwind by Donald Draganski. A secondary aim is to impart greater awareness and understanding of works for voice and woodwind quintet. Music for this combination is largely unknown and neglected, yet this subgenre of vocal chamber music has several works by twentieth and twenty-first century composers worthy of attention. …

The Kodaly Method In The Twenty First Century, Sharon Lierse
Dr. Sharon Lierse
Music methodologies provide educators with a defined curriculum which transpires students to a level of musical proficiency. They are often designed for young children and can be adapted to different cultures. The Kod_a_ly Method was developed in Hungary during the 1940s and is based on the premise that children should acquire music skills from an early age. It was first used in Hungarian schools and subsequently has been used in training institutions around the world. Since the implementation of the Kod_a_ly Method there have been many social, economic and political developments which have impacted arts and education. A group of …
