Makiko Kinoshita And Her 9 Preludes For Piano: The Amalgam Of American Jazz And European Tradition, Mai Nagatomo 2012 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Makiko Kinoshita And Her 9 Preludes For Piano: The Amalgam Of American Jazz And European Tradition, Mai Nagatomo

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Creative Work, and Performance

Makiko Kinoshita is one of the leading contemporary composers in Japan. Kinoshita’s 9 Preludes (2001) is remarkable twenty-first century piano literature that provides abundant use of various musical styles. The most important style that Kinoshita combined with traditional Western writing is jazz; especially the rhythmic and harmonic language of Jazz music. This document provides a detailed analysis of Kinoshita’s unique treatments of form, tonality, harmony, rhythm, and motivic materials. The central section of this study employs musical examples in order to examine how Kinoshita fuses diverse elements of musical styles with modern musical language to create her own idiom. Along …

A Walk Through An American Classic, Emma Gage 2012 Cedarville University

A Walk Through An American Classic, Emma Gage

Musical Offerings

The music of Walt Disney’s classic films was written by a number of hand-picked composers who, working with Disney, ingeniously crafted the music to fit animation and bring musical inspiration to the homes of viewers leaving America and the world with a beloved legacy. Though Walt Disney was a cartoonist and not a musician, music was given a distinct, almost central, role in the creation of his cartoons. Special techniques such as Mickey-mousing or the click track were developed by composers and used to synchronize this music and animation. These processes really began with Disney and have formed the basis …

Post-Colonial Reflexivities Of Ni-Vanuatu Urban Youth In The Muisc Industry, Thomas Dick, Monika Stern 2012 Southern Cross University

Post-Colonial Reflexivities Of Ni-Vanuatu Urban Youth In The Muisc Industry, Thomas Dick, Monika Stern

Thomas Dick

The urban music of “developing” countries is a privileged form of expression for young people. Across international borders, musicians identify with each other as opposed to “non-musicians”, but at the same time assert themselves as privileged messengers of the young people of their community, their town and, in some cases, their country in general. Music is often subject to the paradox between admiration and disapproval: the talented musician as star or idol, appearing in the media, wearing “in” clothes, etc, as opposed to the unstable musician who is drugged, alcoholic, unfaithful, incapable, etc.

Today, the nascent music industry in Port …

A Critical Edition Of Gustave Vogt's 4eme Solo De Concert, Mark Runkles 2012 University of Nevada, Las Vegas

A Critical Edition Of Gustave Vogt's 4eme Solo De Concert, Mark Runkles

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

As oboe professeur titulaire at the Paris Conservatory from 1816-53, Gustave Vogt established his importance as a pedagogue by teaching many leading nineteenth century European oboists, and his influence can be traced to numerous living oboists. Additionally, Vogt played a seminal role in developing a virtuosic Romantic oboe style that paralleled the virtuosic styles developed for the more prevalent Romantic solo instruments, the piano and violin. His music is rarely played today, and Vogt remains a largely unknown figure even within the oboe community. The purpose of this study is to develop a critical edition of Gustave Vogt's 4ème Solo …

Brown Study An Original Musical Recording, Alan Clark 2012 University of Central Florida

Brown Study An Original Musical Recording, Alan Clark

HIM 1990-2015

For a year and a spring semester, I have been in the works of a school music project. I set out to make a record of ten self-penned songs. Along the length of the project, I would discover musicians and recording artists. I notated my songs on a staff and recorded demos to assist players of drums, electric bass, French horn, and violin. I play guitar, percussion, synthesized instruments, and do all of the singing on Brown Study, the record's title. The technology used to create the songs include a Tascam 2488 (home digital recording device), computers, printers, cell phones …
