Addressing The Critical Shortage Of Latinos In Music Education: Pre-Service Latino Music Education Student Perspectives On Recruitment And Retention Strategies, Eben-Ezer Arias-Garcia, Dean Gronemeier

McNair Poster Presentations

My research focus is on 1st and 2nd generation Latino music education students and their paths to becoming music educators in the United States. Latino students are an under researched portion of music education in the American population, but represent the fastest growing ethnic group in America. During my preliminary research I found that there is a critical shortage of Latino music educators. Through an instrumental case study with critical-case sampling, done through interviews and a questionnaire taken by several pre-service Latino music education majors at a southwest university, I found that the most important factor for recruiting future music …

Acting For Opera Singers, Jennifer Hamilton 2015 Technological University Dublin

Acting For Opera Singers, Jennifer Hamilton

Teaching Fellowships

As the majority of professional classical singers earn a significant part of their living in opera, it is vital that conservatoires and studios are able to provide fit-for-purpose education for these trainee artists. As opera productions today are increasingly influenced by the trends in cinema and live-streamed media, this study sought to identify and clarify the range and detail of acting and performance skills required of opera singers in this evolving professional environment. A significant part of the data collected relates to the participants’ perceptions about the relevance of technical stagecraft skills. These techniques mainly relate to how performers negotiate …

It may relax them, motivate them, or even sooth them, helping to reduce frustration levels. Music enhances learning in the classroom and it has long been used to help memory skills in students such as learning the alphabet through song. Music helps stimulate creativity and reflection, and it also provides a welcoming entrance into …

An Analysis Of Student Teachers’ Instruction In A Beginning Band Setting, Eric C. Bonds

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the teaching behaviors of student teachers in a beginning band setting and identified their instructional targets to compare the data between the participants from two different conditions, the on-podium condition and the off-podium condition. Previous research of expert and experienced teachers in a beginning band setting suggests those teachers were mobile during instruction, were proactive in managing transition periods, remained off the podium for greater durations while providing instruction, used modeling frequently, and provided specific directives toward goal attainment. The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether student teachers more closely exhibit the instructional strategies of …

Opera Education In The Upper Elementary Music Classroom, Carmen Louise Taylor 2015 University of Mississippi

Opera Education In The Upper Elementary Music Classroom, Carmen Louise Taylor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Adults are increasingly becoming uninvolved with the arts and it is therefore important to cultivate a new audience, beginning with a well-rounded musical education for elementary-age children. Opera can easily be implemented as a part of a well-rounded musical education and can be taught in conjunction with multiple subjects. Anecdotal evidence suggests that children are exposed to negative stereotypes about opera without receiving proper education on the subject and are thus more likely to not be interested in opera as they grow older. A short survey was sent to fourth and fifth grade music teachers around the state of Mississippi …
