Today, the scholarly publishing sector is undergoing its second digital transformation. The first digital transformation saw a massive shift from paper to digital, but otherwise publishing retained many of the structures, workflows, incentives, and outputs that characterized the print era. A variety of shared infrastructure was developed to serve the needs of this first digital transformation. This paper lays out the conceptual groundwork for a long-term project examining ethical issues raised when addressing the value of knowledge to a knowledge economy. The project includes a series of papers on specific topics that interrelate to the subjects of knowledge, ethics and organizations. While some of the planned articles for the project will have a practical focus, others, such as this one, will be conceptual in nature. The following outlines selected key concepts for an ethics of knowledge and their relationship with cognate areas of inquiry and practice.

Rowan University wanted a single, streamlined point of access to information about research activity by all our faculty. The Technology Services Librarian proposed leveraging our ORCID membership to integrate faculty research information in ORCID with university identity management services. Information Resources & Technology (IRT) worked with the Division of Research and the Libraries to design and implement a solution that achieved this goal.

To Open Or Not To Open: An Exploration Of Faculty Decisions To Publish Open-Access Articles, Jessica Kirschner, Hillary Miller, Preeti Kamat, Jose Alcaine, Sergio Chaparro, Nina Exner

Introduction: Faculty face numerous pressures as they decide whether to publish articles open access (OA). This pilot study investigated the extent to which School of Education faculty members’ engagement with OA was influenced by promotion and tenure (P&T) and how this influence related to other intrinsic, extrinsic, and contextual factors. Methods: This exploratory, sequential, mixed-method study adapted Social Exchange Theory to understand faculty engagement with OA article publication. The study used a quantitative survey followed by qualitative interviews and focus groups.

Results: Participants reported that P&T had substantive influence over faculty practices regarding OA. Con- nected factors included beliefs about …

In this report, we explore the progress made over the past two decades toward achieving equal participation by women in research and innovation. By contributing to a greater understanding of the current landscape, this report intends to illuminate pathways forward, inform policymaking and contribute to the pursuit of gender diversity and equal opportunities in the research workforce.

Comprising Hong Kong, Macao, and nine cities in southern China's Guangdong province, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) is one of the most dynamic and innovative regions in the world, housing leading universities and global high tech companies. To understand the research landscape of the GBA and assess its research strengths, this report, developed in partnership with the Chinese University of Hong Kong provides an overview of the research performance of the GBA and a highlight of the research development of Hong Kong based on analysis of research output data from 2018-2022.

Artificial Intelligence And Lis Publishing: A Survey Of Journal Editors, Allison Hosier, Laureen Cantwell-Jurkovic

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

This Qualtrics-based survey was used to explore the AI-related policies of LIS journals and various journal support mechanisms about AI (e.g., AI detection tools, peer reviewer guidelines, copyediting processes, and more), as well as EIC perspectives and attitudes toward generative AI within the context of scholarly publishing. In early summer 2024, researchers shared the survey with select top-tier journal editors in the library science field. Results from this survey will be published in the article “Artificial Intelligence and LIS Publishing: A Survey of Journal Editors” in Library Trends in 2025 (Volume 73).
