History has normative force. There was no history of colonialism, gender, fashion or crime until there were contemporary demands to explain and justify certain values. The African Copyright and Access to Knowledge (ACA2K) project is a pan-African research network of academics and researchers from law, economics and the information sciences, spanning Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Mozambique, Senegal, South Africa and Uganda. Research conducted by the project was designed to investigate the extent to which copyright is fulfilling its objective of facilitating access to knowledge, and learning materials in particular, in the study countries. Few words strike fear into the hearts of college faculty and administrators like copyright infringement. Misunderstandings and misinformation about copyright run rampant on college campuses today which can lead to stifling classroom teaching or even liability for copyright infringement. In this column I begin with a short overview of copyright and fair use followed by a discussion of some of the more common copyright myths I have encountered over the past few years.
