This study makes a contribution to the rhetoric and composition field by documenting the research and writing processes of a diverse group of 15 multilingual writers in first-year composition (FYC) at a small private southeastern university. I collected and analyzed data from three assignments: 1) a video think-aloud capturing participants’ first online search for sources, 2) a two-page reflection on the use of sources in the first full draft of students’ research paper, and 3) their first full draft of the research paper. The study is the first to systematically examine how multilingual writers in FYC at a U.S. university …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Open Educational Resources (OER) are digital texts, news media, and other types of resources publicly accessible under an open license, and they can be used for teaching, learning, evaluation, and research. OER is the term for information and products that are freely used, remixed, improved, and redistributed by anybody with the owner's permission under specific licenses. These are designed to be adjusted for regionally unique circumstances to reduce barriers to accessibility through efficient instruction. The creation and promotion of free educational resources are often motivated by providing a better and alternative educational perspective. Topic Development, Sandra Teft 2024 Grand Valley State University

Topic Development, Sandra Teft

Handouts

The purpose of this assignment is to not only full develop a topic for research, but to get comfortable in the process. Students start by working individually to develop subtopics and areas of interest from their original topic or research question. They then work in groups to help students continue to develop their ideas more completely. It is oftentimes easier to engage with a topic when it is not your own and there is less pressure. I was hoping to show students how easy it was to do this for others, and that it could be just as easy to …

Choosing An Appropriate Literature Review Method For Design Science Research: An Analysis Of Past Doctoral Theses, Tichaona Chinyerere, Walter F. Uys 2024 University of Cape Town

Choosing An Appropriate Literature Review Method For Design Science Research: An Analysis Of Past Doctoral Theses, Tichaona Chinyerere, Walter F. Uys

African Conference on Information Systems and Technology

Design science research (DSR) generates knowledge that informs problem-solving and has emerged as a viable research paradigm in Information Systems doctoral research. Doctoral research students are, however, confused by the number of options available when selecting an appropriate literature review method for design science research. To inform the selection of an appropriate literature review method, we analyzed the literature review types from 35 design science theses and dissertations in Information Systems. Indications are that the most dominant literature review method was descriptive, and the primary purpose was theory building. To meet the objectives of design science research, we suggest using …

The News Is History: Building News Literacy Skills With Historic Primary Sources, Jen Hoyer 2024 CUNY New York City College of Technology

The News Is History: Building News Literacy Skills With Historic Primary Sources, Jen Hoyer

Publications and Research

The news is inescapable, and simultaneously headline-laden advertising-as-news follows us on scrolling video screens through public transit, at the gym, and on billboards lining the sidewalks. As the news and its lookalikes feel more and more omnipresent, the need for news literacy skills and their implementation feels more and more urgent. At the same time, continually morphing media platforms and news formats make it seem impossible to know: which of these things actually is the news? What’s most important for me to pay attention to?

What if, instead of teaching skills for understanding the next shiny news format, we turn …

Along For The Journey: Graduate Student Perceptions Of Research, Alissa A. Droog, Kari D. Weaver, Frances Brady 2024 Northern Illinois University

Along For The Journey: Graduate Student Perceptions Of Research, Alissa A. Droog, Kari D. Weaver, Frances Brady

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Graduate students’ identities and personal lives are heavily tied to their experiences of research, and many struggle to find, understand, and use information for research purposes. Using a drawing exercise rooted in visual research methods combined with semi-structured interviews, a research team in the United States and Canada explored graduate student perceptions of research with nineteen participants. Thematic analysis identified six themes: research is abstract; research is an odyssey; social support makes or breaks the student experience; research is an emotional continuum; interplay between identity/values; information is problematic. The study has implications for how librarians support graduate student research.
