Standards Are Everywhere: A Freely Available Introductory Online Educational Program On Standardization For Product Development, Margaret Phillips, Michael Fosmire, Paul B Mcpherson
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
The collaboration between the Purdue Libraries and the Purdue Polytechnic Institute on standards education goes back to the 1980’s.[i] With a shared goal of preparing students for success after graduation, the Libraries and (then) Department of Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET) devised activities and instruction to show students that they will need to be able to find information ‘beyond the textbook’ to solve the problems they will face in the workplace. They will need specific information that relates to their particular circumstance, whether it is a material property, production technique, or an industry standard.
In recent years, the Libraries and Polytechnic …

Purdue University Libraries partner with other units on campus to provide Instruction Matters: Purdue Academic Course Transformation (IMPACT), an initiative to redesign undergraduate courses to enhance student learning. Librarians involved with IMPACT collaborate with instructors to redesign courses while also seeking opportunities to integrate information literacy (IL) into course curricula in ways that support disciplinary learning. The Libraries conducted three research studies exploring aspects related to teacher, student and librarian stakeholders of the IMPACT program. The research uses both quantitative and qualitative methods to examine: 1) teachers’ views of IL in active learning environments, 2) students’ motivation and performance related …

User Engagement With Social Media, Implication On The Library Usage: A Case Of Selected Public And Academic Libraries In Malaysia, Sharyna Shafawi, Basri Hassan
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The mainstream use of social media has impacted the library as it has been identified to be an efficient platform for libraries to foster networking and enhance engagement with their user community. The unique characteristics of social media with ‘high tech’, ‘interactive’ blend with the ‘human touch’ give a valuable means for libraries to provide information resources and services beyond their physical walls. However, despite its widespread usage, an engagement rate on social media is still low among library users and evaluation of social media use is still elusive and scarce in the library literature. Prior studies have yet to …

Why study green libraries? We know that as of 2007, paper and paperboard makes up 33% of total municipal solid waste recycling. This suggests that libraries contribute to this figure as libraries’ collections and operational materials are made up of paper. Through a literature review and a case study, this paper will examine how to create a management system for a green library. This system is implemented as a Green library at the Kasetsart University Library. This paper will apply its results to the STIE Perbanas Surabaya Library as the next site for the implementation of a green library. In …

Research Models, Primo, & The First Year Experience, Kimberly Willson-St. Clair
Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations
Research can be daunting for freshman who are challenged to gather scholarly information beyond Google for their research projects. By blending two research models, ASE (Analyze, Search, Evaluate) with BEAM (Background, Exhibit, Argument, and Method), students can think critically about their topics and strategically search PRIMO [Library catalog] for relevant results. This approach addresses several ACRL Framework threshold concepts, especially research as strategic exploration and scholarship as conversation. This presentation shows how effective Primo can be for first year experience students in regards to discovering relevant scholarly resources, and discovering other pertinent, authoritative resources.

Young, healthy college students who were previously dependents of adult parents or caregivers are less likely to be concerned with disease management. Personal health information management (PHIM) is a special case of personal information management (PIM) that is associated with multiple interactions among varying stakeholders and systems. However, there has been limited evidence to understand informational or behavioral underpinning of the college students’ PHIM activities, …
