Libraries across the globe have been pursuing open access for decades, but until recently, progress has continued to be painfully slow. Transformative open access agreements with publishers have begun to change this, as institutions in Europe and increasingly in the US as well are now negotiating open access agreements with major publishers. By transitioning major journal license expenditures from ‘read access’ to support open access publishing, we can begin to achieve open access at scale, supporting our authors in all of the journals in which they choose to publish. This presentation focuses on my efforts to launch and administer a community-centered documentation project to capture and collect first-hand accounts, personal narratives, and reflections from members of the CSUSB campus community detailing the direct impact of COVID-19 on their daily lives. Attention is also given to the resulting digital collection that was created from the content submitted as part of this project.

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Kentucky Virtual Library’s Affordable Learning Steering Committee, an initiative of the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education (CPE), is a working group of librarians from universities around Kentucky exploring ways to advance Kentucky in the Open Educational Resource (OER) / Affordable Textbook movement.

The panel presentation included an overview of their work to date and a discussion with the audience about Kentucky’s needs and strategies related to affordable courseware for students on topics including working with campus bookstores, adding course resources to library collections, using e-reserves dynamically, promoting faculty use and creation of open content, and campus textbook initiatives.

Expanding and modernising information services are crucial to the continual existence and patronage of academic libraries in the digital era. Technological evolutions have impelled libraries to incorporate all-encompassing, user-friendly and technology-driven service delivery approaches in academic libraries. Emerging technologies seem to fill this perceived gap. This study brings to light the level of awareness, adoption, preferred and readiness for the incorporation of emerging technologies into academic libraries activities in Nigeria. Amid 18 emerging technologies, adoption is stumpy, only an infinitesimal number (WebOPAC, library website, Cybrary, social media and Institutional repository) considered, and awareness remained high. Ann Allen Shockley: An Activist-­Librarian For Black Special Collections, Shaundra Walker

While Ann Allen Shockley’s literary career has received a wealth of critique, her work as a librarian and her writings about Black Special Collections have not received as much analysis. When viewed through the lens of Critical Race Theory (CRT), Shockley emerges as an activist- librarian, one worthy of further study and consideration. Her writing and instruction on Black special collections highlight the liberatory potential of collection building to address the marginalization that traditional cataloging and classification systems impose on materials about the experiences of Black people.
