Implications Of Bibframe And Linked Data For Libraries And Publishers, Michele Casalini

This article considers the current situation of transition from the machine-readable cataloging (MARC) formats to the Bibliographic Framework Initiative (BIBFRAME) data model, and the further step to organize and publish catalog information in the emerging linked data technology. The definition and development of new tools to realize the required changes are discussed and an outline provided of the steps being taken by Casalini Libri to ensure the compliance of its bibliographical production and services with the new standards and offer assistance to libraries and publishers in their implementation.

We live in an era of unprecedented scholarly productivity and vastly improved scholarly communication. Academic researchers today have immediate access to an immense volume of scholarly articles and research data that would have amazed a researchers of 25 years ago. Today, my library at a medium-sized Masters institution, offers students and faculty an online Discovery System that provides direct access to millions of articles and nearly 80,000 online journals -- increasing the amount of scholarly information available to our patrons by 20, 30, 40 times? ... This presentation will consider how almost 10,000 pictures from the Chicano/Mexicano farming communities of the Upper Rio Grande Valley of Southern Colorado and Northern New Mexico can contribute and alter the narrative of farm working. This digital collection documents over 30 years of farming with acequias, or communal irrigation canals, and captures themes of food production, the care of the land and environment, and water management. In a time where large-scale agribusiness is fomented by Monsanto chemicals and seed control, these farmers work to maintain acequia agriculture. UCSF faculty passed an Open Access Policy in 2012, yet it wasn’t until a partially automated research information management system (RIS) was in place in 2015 that there was any measurable increase in deposits to the institutional repository. Despite this uptick, overall engagement with the RIS as well as deposits were lower than the university wanted them to be. In an effort to increase participation with the policy, the UCSF Library embarked on a six-month project to improve the RIS search results and ramp up the deposit rate.

We fi rst came into contact with the Tippecanoe County Historical Association (TCHA) through the fall 2016 honors course “Digital Histories,” led by Dr. Jennifer Bay. Our course project was to create a digital exhibition for the TCHA with a service-learning grant provided by Purdue University. In this collaboration, we were able to put into practice the theories and processes we learned in the classroom and gain both a working knowledge of archival techniques and an understanding of the relationship between the institution and the community. In Scholars’ Mine, we have heavily customized the metadata in our series, event communities, journals and galleries. This allows us to more easily track the content in our IR, discover errors, find opportunities to make the IR more robust, and run statistics.

The Content Inventory report is an incredibly useful tool in managing Digital Commons because it combines data across series rather that our having to export each series, adjust the metadata fields and then combine them. The goal of the SHARE initiative, a partnership between the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and the Center for Open Science (COS), is to build a “free, open, data set about research and scholarly activities across their life cycle.” As of August 2017, 161 repositories and publishers have made metadata available to SHARE for harvesting, and the aggregated data set is available for searching. Many metadata providers are institutional repositories utilizing the bepress Digital Commons platform whose metadata is harvested through the OAI-PMH (Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting) protocol for repository interoperability. Subject access to homosexuality and other LGBT topics has a complicated history. Because language used for concepts can change depending on who you ask, controlling this vocabulary is a difficult task. The aim of this research is to show a discrepancy between keyword searches and Library of Congress Subject Headings when searching for queer topics, as well as to encourage other librarians to perform research in this area when updating or adding new subject headings. The results of this study show that differences in language do exist but mainly for concepts with difficult or multiple meanings or when doing searches …

How does the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education function in relation to the information literacy standards used with students in K-12 schools and how does it inform academic librarians’ pedagogical strategies? While these documents are strongly related, there are large differences in their theoretical approach to information literacy, which are revealed in their definitions, treatment of dispositions, and approach to measurement. This leaves gaps in instructional approaches and student learning. Linked open data promises global interconnectedness of a vast amount of data. Web technologies promise to lower the barriers to accessing information and to enable knowledge production of massive scale. But can the web of data answer a music reference question? Starting with a seemingly impossible search for a Schubert song, this article describes how linked data technologies could overcome some limitations of catalog searching.
