In honor of this week, we’re excited to highlight one of the newest collections in the Dissertations, Theses & Projects section of Digital Commons@TMC: scholarly work from UTHealth’s Cizik School of Nursing Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Program. Since launching on September 1st, over 60 student abstracts, many accompanied by project posters, have been submitted. These works have already received more than 1,000 downloads a testament to their impact and reach.

In the early 20th century, polio was one of the most feared diseases in the world. It struck quickly, and for some, left lasting paralysis—especially in the muscles that control breathing. That’s where the iron lung came in.

This large, capsule-like machine enclosed a patient’s body up to the neck in an airtight chamber. Through shifts in air pressure, it caused the chest to rise and fall, simulating natural breathing. Archival literacy, the skills and knowledge one needs to effectively utilize an archive or special collections, is often taught to undergraduate students during one-shot instruction sessions or semester-long courses. For users who do not attend these sessions, archives may be inaccessible due to a lack of archival literacy. This session focuses on the ingredients used by the University Archives at Minnesota State University, Mankato to make a successful Research Apprentice Program Hotdish. In 2024, the University Archives at Minnesota State University, Mankato participated in the Undergraduate Research Center’s Research Apprenticeship Program (RAP). The RAP provides students new to research with opportunities to collaborate with faculty and staff on mentored research, scholarly, and creative projects. Initiated in 2020 with a multi-year grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Division of Preservation and Access, The Gulf Coast LGBT Radio and Television Digitization Project aimed to digitize and preserve thousands of hours of LGBTQ broadcast history from the Houston, Texas area. Through meticulous inventorying, digitization, redaction, transcription, publication, promotion, and preservation processes, the project team navigated the delicate balance between equitable access and copyright compliance. The selected programs encapsulate decades of LGBTQ life and culture, covering a diverse array of topics crucial to understanding the community’s evolution in the region.
