Economic Shocks, Trade And International Relations, Jack Barnes Thompson 2012 University of Birmingham

Economic Shocks, Trade And International Relations, Jack Barnes Thompson

Undergraduate Economic Review

In an interdependent world, trade has unavoidable game aspects. A model with two agents is used to determine the impact of trade and a military alliance between two major world players, North America and China, and an external non-actor, South Korea. The objective of this study is to investigate the impact of cooperative actions and outcomes by the two agents on a two-track policy for South Korea. We also study a variant to the game by considering a change in international relations. Welfare implications are also observed.

Us Manufacturing And Vertical/Horizontal Intra-Industry Trade: Examining The Smooth Adjustment Hypothesis, Roger White, Cheng Chen 2012 Franklin & Marshall College

Us Manufacturing And Vertical/Horizontal Intra-Industry Trade: Examining The Smooth Adjustment Hypothesis, Roger White, Cheng Chen

Economics

Using data that represent the six-digit North American Industrial Classification System-classified industries that comprise the US manufacturing sector and that span the years 1989–2005, we test the validity of the smooth adjustment hypothesis (SAH). To our knowledge, this is the first examination of the SAH for the USA. The results of our empirical analysis are consistent with the confirmation of the SAH. Further, using measures of vertical marginal intra-industry trade and of horizontal marginal intra-industry trade, we find that the latter has a stronger effect on employment of production workers than does the former. The findings suggest that for total …

In Support Of The Trips Agreement, Amanda JAKOBSSON, Paul S. Segerstrom 2012 Singapore Management University

In Support Of The Trips Agreement, Amanda Jakobsson, Paul S. Segerstrom

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper challenges the conventional wisdom that the TRIPs agreement is bad for developing countries. We present a dynamic general equilibrium model of North-South trade that allows us to study the implications of stronger intellectual property rights (IPR) protection and simultaneous trade liberalization. In our model, stronger IPR protection in the South (TRIPs) leads to more innovation in the North, more technology transfer to the South and higher long-run southern consumer welfare. The South also benefits from trade liberalization but the welfare gains from TRIPs are considerably larger.

Regionalization, Development And Competition Law: Exploring The Political Dimension, David J. Gerber 2012 IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law

Regionalization, Development And Competition Law: Exploring The Political Dimension, David J. Gerber

All Faculty Scholarship

In discussions of the regionalization of competition law, the political dimension often leads a shadowy existence. Regionalization tends to be presented with a hint of a halo around it. States are presented as acting for a shared policy objective intended to benefit all, and political issues often sit uncomfortably with that image. This is particularly true when regionalization involves ‘developing countries’. Here there is often a further level of ‘common good’ discourse. Regionalization is here portrayed not only as a communal experience and goal, but also as one designed to reduce poverty and aid economic development. Where regionalization involves competition …

The Impact Of The American Recovery And Reinvestment Plan On The Job Market, Matthew Schur 2012 Bryant University

The Impact Of The American Recovery And Reinvestment Plan On The Job Market, Matthew Schur

Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal

This paper will investigate the impact of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act on the job market. The ARRA, also known as the Stimulus or the Recovery Act, is a stimulus package that was passed by the 111th United States Congress in February 2009 and signed into law on the 17th of February by President Barack Obama. The primary focus of this bill was to save and create jobs in response to the 2000’s recession that our economy faced. We will evaluate impact of the ARRA by using the latest census bureau data of each state and regression analysis. Our …

Japan As A Clean Energy Leader, Stefan N. Norbom 2012 Gettysburg College

Japan As A Clean Energy Leader, Stefan N. Norbom

Gettysburg Economic Review

Over the past several decades, Japan’s energy strategy had positioned it as the world’s leader in clean and efficient electricity production and usage. This strategy, heavily dependent on nuclear energy, was essentially destroyed by one of history’s largest earthquakes, followed by a tsunami which overwhelmed five nuclear reactors on March 11, 2011. As of April 2012, all of Japan’s 54 nuclear reactors have been shut down and it is uncertain when and how many may be restarted. This paper examines Japan’s options for crafting a new way forward with an energy policy to power the world’s third largest economy while …

Cadbury Twenty Years On, Cally Jordan 2012 Melbourne Law School

Cadbury Twenty Years On, Cally Jordan

Faculty Papers & Publications

This year marks the twentieth anniversary of the publication of the Cadbury Report, one of the most significant events in modern corporate governance. The Cadbury Report, and its simple two page 'best practices', triggered a global debate on corporate governance. 'Cadbury' codes of corporate governance spread like wildfire. The legacy of the Cadbury Report lives on in the UK with no diminution in the appeal of its voluntary code/comply or explain approach to corporate governance. But there are several clouds looming on the horizon. Comply or explain and voluntary codes of corporate governance appear to have run their course elsewhere …

The Effect Of Homeownership On Household Savings In The United States, Jacquelyn Ammirato 2012 Bryant University

The Effect Of Homeownership On Household Savings In The United States, Jacquelyn Ammirato

Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal

This paper examines the effect of changes in house prices on the saving patterns of households in the United States of America. The paper uses data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics. Three empirical models are run, one for 2009, one for 2005 and one for 1999 data, to account for differences in household income, age of the head of household, employment status, and mortgage information. The results indicate that whether the home is owned or rented has a significant impact on household savings in each year.

Gender Discrimination: What Factors Influence The Level Of Gender Discrimination Facing U.S. Workers?, Joshua Ballance 2012 Bryant University

Gender Discrimination: What Factors Influence The Level Of Gender Discrimination Facing U.S. Workers?, Joshua Ballance

Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal

This paper uses previous research conducted by the author which analyzes gender discrimination at the state level. Using state level discrimination coefficients, this paper looks to analyze why discrimination varies significantly across the United States. The empirical model is constructed using a panel data set over the past twenty years to develop a model that explains why variations in the level of gender discrimination faced by U.S. workers has persisted despite the fact that the level of gender discrimination has decreased over this period.

Offshoring And The Effects On American It Workers, Kristen Bousquet 2012 Bryant University

Offshoring And The Effects On American It Workers, Kristen Bousquet

Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal

This paper will use an existing model from Amiti and Wei (2009) to illustrate the potentially positive effects that offshoring will have on the productivity of American IT workers and the IT industry. The inputs that will be used to measure productivity are labor, capital, materials, service inputs, and the offshoring of materials and services and were collected from the Bureau of Economic Analysis and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Based on a previous study from Amiti and Wei (2009), the results may suggest that there is a positive correlation from offshoring and productivity.
